Cloze test, YDT'nin (YKS Dil) en puan getiren ama en çok panik yaptıran bölümlerinden biridir: tek bir paragrafa serpiştirilmiş beş boşluk, birbirine bağlı beş soru. İyi haber şu ki cloze, ezber değil mantık sınavıdır. Boşluğun türünü (bağlaç mı, edat mı, kelime mi) doğru okursanız, çoğu soruyu paragrafın anlam akışından çözersiniz.
The cloze test is one of YDT's (YKS Language) most point-rewarding yet most panic-inducing sections: five blanks scattered through a single paragraph, five interconnected questions. The good news is that cloze is a test of logic, not memorisation. If you correctly read the type of the blank (is it a connector, a preposition or a word?), you solve most questions from the paragraph's flow of meaning.
A cloze test is a question type where you fill in blanks placed inside a single fluent paragraph. In YDT (YKS Language), a paragraph of usually ~90-140 words is given, and five blanks are opened in the text in the form (1)----, (2)----, (3)----, (4)----, (5)----. Each blank is a separate question, and five options (A-E) are offered for each question.
The blank mark appears in the exam as ---- (short dashes). Because the five questions in a paragraph share the same text, they feed each other: when you work out the meaning of one sentence, the answer to the neighbouring blank becomes clear too.
YDT vs YDS difference. YDT paragraphs are at B1-B2 level: the topics are more everyday and accessible (school, environment, technology, health, daily life) and the sentences are shorter. YDS, on the other hand, works with C1 academic texts. So what you need for success in YDT cloze is not advanced vocabulary but reading the connector-preposition logic and the flow of meaning correctly.
The four main skills tested in cloze are:
Recognising these four types solves half of cloze: because once you understand the type of the blank, a solution method specific to that type kicks in.
What distinguishes cloze from other fill-in-the-blank questions is context. In a single-sentence question the clue is only in that sentence; in cloze the clue may be hidden in the previous or the next sentence. That is why cloze is really a reading comprehension test in disguise. The student who grasps the paragraph's main idea completes most blanks by logic even without knowing individual words.
In YDT, cloze paragraphs are mostly written in an informative tone: they introduce a fact, list the steps of a process, or explain a view. This structure naturally brings connectors (sequence, result, contrast) to the fore. Noticing this skeleton of the text lets you sense in advance which relationship will be tested at which blank.
Cloze'da en büyük hata, boşluğa gelir gelmez şıklara bakmaktır. Doğru yaklaşım önce metni anlamak, sonra boşluğu doldurmaktır. Şu sırayı izle:
Altın kural: Bir boşlukta takıldıysan atla, sonraki boşluğu çöz, sonra geri dön. Çözdüğün diğer cümleler, takıldığın boşluğun anlamını çoğu zaman aydınlatır.
The biggest mistake in cloze is looking at the options the moment you reach the blank. The right approach is to understand the text first, then fill in the blank. Follow this order:
Golden rule: If you get stuck on a blank, skip it, solve the next blank, then come back. The other sentences you solve usually illuminate the meaning of the blank you got stuck on.
Cloze'da boşlukların büyük çoğunluğu üç kategoriye girer. Her birinin çözüm mantığı farklıdır.
Boşluğun iki yanındaki fikirler arasındaki ilişkiyi belirle; sonra o ilişkiye uygun bağlacı seç.
| İlişki | Anlam | Sık ifadeler |
|---|---|---|
| Zıtlık | ama, buna rağmen, oysa | but, however, although, though, whereas, on the other hand, yet |
| Sonuç | bu yüzden, sonuç olarak | so, therefore, thus, as a result, consequently, hence |
| Ekleme | ayrıca, üstelik, dahası | and, moreover, in addition, besides, furthermore, also |
| Sebep | çünkü, -dığı için | because, since, as, due to, owing to |
| Örnek/Açıklama | örneğin, yani | for example, for instance, in other words, that is |
Dikkat: although / though bir bağlaçtır (iki cümleyi birleştirir), however ise cümle başında noktalama ile kullanılan bir geçiş sözcüğüdür. Anlamları benzese de dilbilgisel yerleri farklıdır; şık seçiminde bunu kontrol et.
Edatlar ezbere değil, birlikte kullanıldığı kelimeye göre seçilir. En sık çıkan sabit eşdizimler:
| Kalıp | Örnek |
|---|---|
| aware / proud / afraid of | She is aware of the risks. |
| depend / rely / focus on | We depend on clean water. |
| interested / succeed in | He is interested in science. |
| responsible / famous for | They are responsible for the plan. |
| similar / listen to | This is similar to the old one. |
Paragraftaki zaman zarflarını (now, yesterday, since 2010, next year) ve diğer fiilleri ipucu olarak kullan. Cümlenin geneli geçmişse boşluğa geçmiş zaman, genel bir gerçek anlatılıyorsa geniş zaman gelir. Modal seçiminde ise anlam belirleyicidir: must (zorunluluk), should (öneri), can (yetenek/olasılık), might (zayıf olasılık).
Bazı boşluklarda dört şık da dilbilgisel olarak doğru, ama yalnızca biri bağlama uyar. Burada karar ölçütü anlam ve doğal birlikteliktir. Örneğin make a decision denir, do a decision denmez; heavy rain denir, strong rain denmez. YDT seviyesinde en çok çıkan eşdizimleri (fiil + isim, sıfat + isim) tanımak bu tür boşluklarda hız kazandırır.
Kelime boşluklarında pratik bir yöntem: boşluğa her şıkkı sırayla koy ve cümleyi kendine oku. Çoğu zaman üç şık "olur ama tuhaf", biri ise "doğal" gelir. O doğal olan, cümlenin bağlamına oturandır.
The great majority of blanks in cloze fall into three categories. Each has a different solving logic.
Determine the relationship between the ideas on the two sides of the blank; then choose the connector that suits that relationship.
| Relationship | Meaning | Common expressions |
|---|---|---|
| Contrast | but, despite that, whereas | but, however, although, though, whereas, on the other hand, yet |
| Result | therefore, as a result | so, therefore, thus, as a result, consequently, hence |
| Addition | also, moreover, what's more | and, moreover, in addition, besides, furthermore, also |
| Cause | because, as | because, since, as, due to, owing to |
| Example/Explanation | for example, that is | for example, for instance, in other words, that is |
Note: although / though is a connector (it joins two clauses), whereas however is a transition word used at the start of a sentence with punctuation. Even though their meanings are similar, their grammatical positions differ; check this when choosing the option.
Prepositions are chosen not by rote but according to the word they are used with. The most common fixed collocations:
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| aware / proud / afraid of | She is aware of the risks. |
| depend / rely / focus on | We depend on clean water. |
| interested / succeed in | He is interested in science. |
| responsible / famous for | They are responsible for the plan. |
| similar / listen to | This is similar to the old one. |
Use the time adverbs in the paragraph (now, yesterday, since 2010, next year) and the other verbs as clues. If the sentence is generally in the past, a past tense goes in the blank; if a general fact is being described, the simple present goes in. In choosing a modal, the meaning is decisive: must (obligation), should (advice), can (ability/possibility), might (weak possibility).
In some blanks all four options are grammatically correct, but only one fits the context. Here the decision criterion is meaning and natural pairing. For example, one says make a decision, not do a decision; one says heavy rain, not strong rain. Recognising the collocations that appear most at YDT level (verb + noun, adjective + noun) gives you speed in this kind of blank.
A practical method for vocabulary blanks: put each option into the blank in turn and read the sentence to yourself. Most of the time three options are “possible but odd” and one feels “natural”. The natural one is the one that fits the context of the sentence.

Verification: When you put the five answers in place and read the paragraph from start to finish, the text should be fluent and coherent. Answers: 1-B, 2-D, 3-A, 4-C, 5-E. The answer letters are spread evenly; this is typical of cloze, and you should not expect the same letter to come up repeatedly.
Boşluğu tek başına okumak. Cloze bütüncül bir metindir. Yalnızca boşluğun bulunduğu cümleye bakıp karar vermek, komşu cümledeki asıl ipucunu kaçırtır. Her zaman önce tüm paragrafı oku.
Anlam yerine "kulağa hoş gelen" kelimeyi seçmek. Bir şık dilbilgisel olarak doğru görünebilir ama cümlenin mantığını bozabilir. Özellikle bağlaçlarda daima "iki fikir arasındaki ilişki ne?" sorusunu sor.
Edatı ezbere değil kalıptan bağımsız seçmek. aware of, depend on, responsible for gibi eşdizimler sabittir. Doğru anlamlı kelimeyi bulup yanlış edatla eşleştirmek klasik hatadır; kelime + edat bütününü kontrol et.
Bağlaç ile geçiş sözcüğünü karıştırmak. although (bağlaç) ve however (geçiş) benzer anlam taşır ama cümledeki dilbilgisel yerleri farklıdır. Şık, anlamı verse de yapıya uymuyorsa yanlıştır.
Zaman zarflarını görmezden gelmek. since, ago, now, by next year gibi ifadeler fiilin zamanını ele verir. Bu ipuçlarını atlayıp "tanıdık" bir zamanı işaretlemek puan kaybettirir.
Sona kadar geri dönmemek. Beş cevabı işaretledikten sonra paragrafı baştan sona okumadan geçmek, ufak bir tutarsızlığı fark etmeni engeller. Son okuma cloze'un güvenlik kemeridir.
Reading the blank on its own. Cloze is a holistic text. Deciding by looking only at the sentence containing the blank makes you miss the real clue in the neighbouring sentence. Always read the whole paragraph first.
Choosing the “nice-sounding” word instead of the meaning. An option may look grammatically correct but break the sentence's logic. Especially with connectors, always ask “what is the relationship between the two ideas?”
Choosing the preposition independently of its fixed pattern. Collocations such as aware of, depend on, responsible for are fixed. Finding the correct-meaning word but pairing it with the wrong preposition is a classic mistake; check the word + preposition as a whole.
Confusing a connector with a transition word. although (connector) and however (transition) carry a similar meaning but have different grammatical positions in the sentence. Even if an option gives the meaning, it is wrong if it does not fit the structure.
Ignoring time adverbs. Expressions such as since, ago, now, by next year give away the tense of the verb. Skipping these clues and marking a “familiar” tense costs points.
Not going back at the end. Moving on after marking the five answers without reading the paragraph from start to finish stops you from noticing a small inconsistency. The final read is cloze's seatbelt.
Özet: YDT cloze'da başarı formülü nettir: önce anla, sonra doldur. Boşluğun türünü tanı, anlam ilişkisini oku, kalıpları hatırla ve en sonda bütünlüğü doğrula. Bu disiplinle B1-B2 seviyesindeki cloze sorularının neredeyse tamamını güvenle çözebilirsin.
Summary: The success formula in YDT cloze is clear: understand first, then fill in. Recognise the type of the blank, read the meaning relationship, remember the patterns, and at the very end verify the whole. With this discipline you can confidently solve almost all cloze questions at B1-B2 level.
