Anlatım Türkçe; örnek cümleler ve şıklar İngilizcedir.
Example sentences and answer options are shown in English.
Restatement questions ask you to find the option that expresses the meaning of an English sentence exactly as it is but with a different structure. Word similarity is a trap; what is measured is equivalence of meaning. On this page you will learn step by step how to extract the meaning skeleton of the stem sentence, how to test the modality, scope, logical-relationship and negation elements, and how to eliminate the most common distractors.
Örneğin "He failed because he didn't study" cümlesi "His failure resulted from a lack of study" biçiminde yeniden ifade edilebilir: kelimeler değişti, neden-sonuç ilişkisi aynı kaldı.
In the restatement question type the stem is a single English sentence. Below it, five English options are given, and you are asked to choose the sentence that restates the meaning of the stem most accurately and most completely. The key word is paraphrase: saying the same message with different words and a different grammatical structure.
The correct option does not use exactly the same words as the stem; on the contrary, it preserves the meaning through synonyms, different connectors, an active-passive conversion or a change in clause order. For example, the sentence "He failed because he didn't study" can be restated as "His failure resulted from a lack of study": the words changed, the cause-effect relationship stayed the same.
Distractors, on the other hand, share many words with the stem but break the meaning at a subtle point: they weaken the modality (must becomes may), broaden the scope (some becomes all), swap cause and effect, add information not present in the stem, or drop one of its elements. That is why restatement measures the skill of meaning analysis, not word recognition.
Golden rule: Look at equivalence of meaning, not word similarity. The option sharing the most words with the stem is most often a trap.
The way to solve a restatement question without leaving it to chance is to first simplify the stem sentence in your own words, then compare each option against this simplified meaning. Understanding the stem before you look at the options protects you from the similar-word trap.
Once you make this sequence a habit, you will see within seconds which element is being tested, even in long and complex sentences. Over time the "understand, then compare" reflex both speeds you up and keeps you away from the most common word-matching mistake.
|---|---|---|
| Kip (modality) | must = have to (zorunluluk aynı) | must → may (zorunluluk olasılığa düşer) |
| Kapsam (quantifier) | most = the majority | most → all / some (nicelik kayar) |
| Mantıksal ilişki | because = since (neden-sonuç aynı) | neden-sonuç → zıtlık, ya da sebep ile sonuç yer değiştirir |
| Olumlu-olumsuz | not consider = disregard | olumlu cümle olumsuza (ya da tersi) çevrilir |
Kip için should (tavsiye), must (zorunluluk) ve might (olasılık) birbirinin yerine geçmez. Kapsam için few (neredeyse hiç) ile a few (birkaç) bile farklıdır. Mantıksal ilişkide although ile because karıştırılırsa cümlenin ruhu tamamen değişir. Olumsuzlukta ise unless, without, fail to gibi gizli olumsuz yapılara dikkat et.
Şıkları elerken kendine dört soru sor: Kip aynı mı? Kapsam aynı mı? İlişki aynı mı? Olumluluk aynı mı?
The difference between the correct option and a distractor is usually in one of the four elements below. If an option preserves all of these elements it is correct; if even one is broken it is a distractor.
| Element | If preserved (correct) | If broken (distractor) |
|---|---|---|
| Modality | must = have to (obligation stays the same) | must → may (obligation drops to possibility) |
| Scope (quantifier) | most = the majority | most → all / some (the quantity shifts) |
| Logical relationship | because = since (cause-effect stays the same) | cause-effect → contrast, or cause and effect swap places |
| Affirmative-negative | not consider = disregard | an affirmative sentence is turned negative (or vice versa) |
For modality, should (advice), must (obligation) and might (possibility) are not interchangeable. For scope, even few (almost none) and a few (some) are different. In the logical relationship, if although and because are confused, the whole spirit of the sentence changes. As for negation, watch out for hidden negative structures such as unless, without and fail to.
When eliminating options, ask yourself four questions: Is the modality the same? Is the scope the same? Is the relationship the same? Is the polarity the same?
Örnek 1. You must submit the application by Friday; otherwise, your request will not be considered.
Örnek 2. Since most of the participants found the training useful, the company decided to repeat it next year.
Örnek 3. Despite having little experience, she managed to complete the project on time.

Kip/kapsam kaymasını görmemek. must → may, all → most, always → usually gibi tek kelimelik değişiklikler cümlenin gücünü değiştirir.
Gizli olumsuzları kaçırmak. unless, without, fail to, hardly, no longer yapıları olumsuzluk taşır. Bunları olumlu okursan neden-sonuç ve olumluluk öğesini yanlış eşleştirirsin.
Fazla bilgiyi eksiksizlik sanmak.
The word-similarity trap. The option that shares the most words with the stem is most often a distractor put there to test you. The exam deliberately fills this option with the stem's words; if you don't look at the meaning skeleton, you are fooled by the familiar words.
Not seeing a modality/scope shift. Single-word changes such as must → may, all → most, always → usually change the strength of the sentence. Because these shifts look small, they are the most easily overlooked mistakes.
Jumping to a partly correct option. An option may match the first half of the sentence perfectly but break an element in the second half. Don't choose before reading the whole option; "correct up to here" is not enough.
Missing hidden negatives. The structures unless, without, fail to, hardly and no longer carry negation. If you read them as affirmative, you mismatch the cause-effect and the polarity elements.
Mistaking extra information for completeness. Some distractors add a plausible-sounding extra comment to the stem's message. Because this extra information is not in the stem, the option is wrong no matter how correct it looks; restatement only re-expresses what is given, it does not add interpretation.
Before you mark the question, quickly run through this list in your mind:
If you can say "yes" to all eight of these items, your choice is safe. If you hesitate on even one item, test that element again.
If you consciously apply this list over a few practice sets, the items gradually become automatic and the time you spend on each question in the exam noticeably shortens.
