Bu soru tipinde tek bir kelimeyi değil, paragrafın mantık örgüsünü tamamlayan cümleyi ararsın.
In this question type you look not for a single word but for the sentence that completes the paragraph's web of logic.
Paragraf tamamlama, akademik bir paragraftaki boşluğa hem anlamca hem de bağlaç/gönderim açısından oturan tam cümleyi seçmektir. Boşluğun konumu (baş, orta, son) hangi tür cümlenin gerektiğini doğrudan belirler.
Paragraph completion means choosing the full sentence that fits the gap in an academic paragraph both in meaning and in terms of connectors/reference. The position of the gap (beginning, middle, end) directly determines what type of sentence is needed.
Doğru cümle üç şeyi aynı anda sağlar: paragrafın konu bütünlüğünü korur, komşu cümlelerle anlam akışını sürdürür ve however, therefore, this, such, these gibi bağlaç ile gönderim öğelerini doğru bağlar.
Boşluğun konumu, aradığın cümlenin türünü belirler:
Bu yüzden ilk bakışın boşluğa değil, boşluğun nerede olduğuna olmalı: konum, sana daha okumadan cümlenin işlevini söyler.
In a paragraph completion question, one sentence has been removed from a 4-5 sentence academic paragraph and replaced with a ---- mark. There are five options below; each is a complete sentence (subject + predicate, about 10-18 words). A single word, a connector or a half expression is never an option. Your task is to find the sentence that fits the gap perfectly both in meaning (coherence) and in connecting elements (cohesion).
The correct sentence does three things at once: it preserves the paragraph's topical unity, maintains the flow of meaning with the neighbouring sentences, and correctly links the however, therefore, this, such, these-type connector and reference elements.
The position of the gap determines the type of sentence you're looking for:
That's why your first glance should be not at the gap but at where the gap is: the position tells you the sentence's function before you even read.
Paragraf tamamlamada acele, en büyük hata kaynağıdır. Şu sırayı bozma:
In paragraph completion, haste is the biggest source of error. Don't break this order:
Doğru cümlenin işlevi, boşluğun paragraftaki yerine göre neredeyse sabittir. Bu tabloyu içselleştirirsen çeldiricilerin yarısını daha okumadan elersin.
| Konum | Beklenen cümle | İpucu |
|---|---|---|
| Başta | Konu / giriş cümlesi: paragrafın genel çerçevesini kurar. | Sonraki cümleler bu fikri örnekle, veriyle ya da açıklamayla destekler. Genelden özele iniş vardır. |
| Ortada | Köprü cümlesi: önceki fikri sonrakine bağlar, geçişi sağlar. | İki yönlü uyum şart. Sonraki cümledeki this, these, such ya da however, therefore boşluğu işaret eder. |
| Sonda | Sonuç / özet cümlesi: paragrafı toparlar veya bir çıkarım yapar. | Çoğu kez Therefore, Thus, As a result, In short ile başlar. Yeni bilgi getirmez, mevcut fikri kapatır. |
Dikkat: Baştaki boşluk ana fikri vermelidir; çok dar, tek bir ayrıntıya odaklanan cümle giriş olamaz. Sondaki boşluk ise yeni bir tartışma açamaz; açıyorsa yanlıştır.
The function of the correct sentence is almost fixed according to the gap's place in the paragraph. If you internalize this table, you eliminate half of the distractors before even reading.
| Position | Expected sentence | Clue |
|---|---|---|
| At the start | Topic / introductory sentence: sets up the general framework of the paragraph. | The following sentences support this idea with examples, data or explanation. There is a move from general to specific. |
| In the middle | Bridge sentence: links the previous idea to the next one, provides the transition. | Two-way fit is essential. The this, these, such or however, therefore in the following sentence points to the gap. |
| At the end | Conclusion / summary sentence: wraps up the paragraph or draws an inference. | Often begins with Therefore, Thus, As a result, In short. It brings no new information; it closes the existing idea. |
Note: A gap at the start must give the main idea; a very narrow sentence focused on a single detail cannot be an introduction. A gap at the end cannot open a new discussion; if it does, it's wrong.
Örnek 1 (baş boşluk).
---- For instance, coral reefs, which support a quarter of all marine species, are highly sensitive to even minor increases in water temperature. When the surrounding water grows too warm, corals expel the algae living in their tissues and gradually turn white, a process known as bleaching. Repeated bleaching events, now occurring more frequently, can leave entire reef systems lifeless within a few decades.
Örnek 2 (orta boşluk).
For most of history, maps were drawn by hand and reflected the limited knowledge of their makers. ---- These digital tools can now update themselves in real time, integrating traffic data, satellite imagery and user reports within seconds. As a result, the modern traveller rarely encounters the blank or mistaken spaces that once filled older charts.
Örnek 3 (son boşluk).
Sleep researchers once assumed that the brain simply shut down during rest. Recent studies, however, reveal intense activity: during deep sleep the brain replays the day's events and strengthens newly formed memories. It also clears out metabolic waste that accumulates while we are awake. ----

Paragrafı okumadan boşluğa atlamak. Doğrudan şıklara dalıp boşluğa "kulağa hoş gelen" cümleyi koymak en yaygın hatadır. Konuyu bir bütün olarak kavramadan hiçbir şık güvenilir değildir.
Sadece boşluğun bitişiğindeki cümleye bakmak. Özellikle orta boşlukta doğru cümle iki yönlü uyum ister. Yalnızca önceki cümleyle uyumlu görünen bir şık, sonraki cümleyle (örneğin bir This / These gönderimiyle) çelişebilir.
Jumping to the gap without reading the paragraph. Diving straight into the options and putting the "nice-sounding" sentence in the gap is the most common mistake. Without grasping the topic as a whole, no option is reliable.
Looking only at the sentence adjacent to the gap. Especially with a gap in the middle, the correct sentence requires a two-way fit. An option that looks compatible only with the previous sentence may contradict the following one (for example a This / These reference).
Choosing an option that's on-topic but breaks the flow. Distractors are often related to the paragraph's general theme; that's why they feel "familiar". But the correct sentence is the one compatible not with the theme but with the logical flow at the place where that sentence sits. "Related" and "fitting into place" are not the same thing.
Wrong connector and tense relationship. An option that sets up cause-and-effect (therefore) where However is expected, or that suddenly shifts to the present tense while the paragraph is in the past, is wrong. Also, don't assume the longest option is automatically correct; length is not a clue.
