Pasaj, soru ve şıklar İngilizce; yalnızca strateji ve çözüm açıklamaları Türkçedir.
The passage, questions and options are in English; the strategy and solution explanations are given here in English.
YDS ve YÖKDİL'de okuma bölümü sınavın kalbidir: akademik bir pasaj ile o pasaja bağlı 3-4 sorudan oluşur ve toplam puanın en büyük dilimini taşır. Bu sayfada okuma sorularının hangi becerileri ölçtüğünü, adım adım bir çözüm rutinini, soru tiplerine göre özel taktikleri ve çözümlü bir örnek üzerinden kanıta dayalı okuma yaklaşımını göreceksin.
On the YDS and YÖKDİL, the reading section is the heart of the exam: it consists of an academic passage and 3-4 questions attached to that passage, and it carries the largest slice of the total score. On this page you will see which skills reading questions measure, a step-by-step solution routine, special tactics by question type, and, through a worked example, an evidence-based reading approach.
The YDS and YÖKDİL reading section comes in blocks consisting of a single academic passage (about 120-180 words) and 3-4 questions attached to that passage. The passage, the question stem and all five options are in English; your job is to understand the text and match the information each question asks for with the correct option.
This section measures four core skills:
The main question types you'll come across are:
There is a truth common to all these types: the correct option restates a piece of information from the passage in synonymous words (a paraphrase). An option that copies a sentence from the text as it is is usually a distractor; the exam wants you to recognize information, not memorize it.
Panikleyip pasajı baştan sona ağır ağır okumak zaman kaybettirir. Bunun yerine amaçlı ve kanıta dayalı bir rutin izle. Aşağıdaki altı adım, bir pasaj bloğunu güvenle çözmenin iskeletidir.
Altın kural. Doğru şık = pasajın paraphrase'i. Kendi genel kültürüne veya "dünyada böyledir" bilgine göre değil, yalnızca bu pasajın söylediğine göre cevapla. Sınav metni ne diyorsa o doğrudur.
Panicking and reading the passage slowly from start to finish wastes time. Instead, follow a purposeful and evidence-based routine. The six steps below are the skeleton of solving a passage block with confidence.
Golden rule. The correct option = a paraphrase of the passage. Answer not according to your general knowledge or your "that's how the world is" belief, but only according to what this passage says. Whatever the exam text says is what is correct.
Her soru tipinin kendi mantığı ve kendi klasik tuzağı vardır. Tipi doğru tanırsan yarı yolu geçmiş olursun.
Ana fikir (main idea).
Tuzak: aşırı-kesin ifadeler (always, never, all, none) ve pasajın desteklemediği büyük genellemeler.
Bağlamdan kelime (vocabulary in context).
Aşağıdaki tablo, her tipi tek bakışta özetler.
| Soru tipi | Taktik | Klasik tuzak |
|---|---|---|
| Ana fikir | İlk/son cümle + tekrar eden tema; en genel ama desteklenen şık | Tek ayrıntıyı ana fikir sanmak; kapsamı aşan genelleme |
| Ayrıntı | Anahtar kelimeyi tara, cümleyi bul, paraphrase'i seç | Metindeki kelimeleri kopyalayan ama farklı şey diyen şık |
| Çıkarım | Söylenenden bir adım ileri git; kanıtla sınırlı kal | Aşırıya kaçmak; always/never türü kesin ifadeler |
| Kelime | Cümledeki anlamı; yerine koyarak dene | Başka bağlamdaki geçersiz sözlük anlamı |
| Gönderim | Geriye en yakın uygun isim; zamir yerine koy, oku | En yakın isme dilbilgisi/anlam uymadan atlamak |
| Yazar tutumu/amacı | Ton kelimeleri (criticize, praise, question); yön bağlaçları | Nötr metne güçlü duygu (aşırı olumlu/olumsuz) yüklemek |
Each question type has its own logic and its own classic trap. If you recognize the type correctly, you're already halfway there.
Main idea. Choose the most general statement that summarizes the whole passage but is supported by the text. The first and last sentences, together with the theme that recurs throughout the paragraph, guide you. The trap: options that present a single detail from the passage as the main idea (too narrow) or that go beyond the scope of the passage (too broad).
Detail. Scan the passage for the key word in the question stem, find that sentence and choose the option that paraphrases it. The answer is almost always hidden in a single sentence. The trap: an option that copies words from the text but says something different.
Inference. Find the conclusion that isn't written directly in the text but follows logically from what is said. Go "one step ahead", but don't go two steps. The trap: over-absolute statements (always, never, all, none) and big generalizations the passage doesn't support.
Vocabulary in context. Think not of the word's general dictionary meaning but of its function in that sentence. Take the word out of the sentence and test the options in its place. The trap: an option that gives the word's meaning in another context (but invalid here).
Reference. For expressions like it / this / they / such, read the sentence backwards and find the nearest noun that is suitable both grammatically and semantically. Put the noun you found in place of the pronoun and read the sentence again; if the meaning isn't broken, it's correct. The trap: the nearest noun is not always the right referent; the meaning has to fit too.
The table below summarizes each type at a glance.
| Question type | Tactic | Classic trap |
|---|---|---|
| Main idea | First/last sentence + recurring theme; the most general but supported option | Mistaking a single detail for the main idea; a generalization beyond the scope |
| Detail | Scan the key word, find the sentence, choose the paraphrase | An option that copies words from the text but says something different |
| Inference | Go one step ahead of what is said; stay limited to the evidence | Overreaching; absolute statements of the always/never kind |
| Vocabulary | The meaning in the sentence; test by substitution | An invalid dictionary meaning from another context |
| Reference | The nearest suitable noun going back; substitute the pronoun and read | Jumping to the nearest noun without checking grammar/meaning |
| Author's attitude/purpose | Tone words (criticize, praise, question); direction connectors | Loading strong emotion (overly positive/negative) onto a neutral text |
Aşağıda gerçek sınav mantığında bir akademik pasaj ve üç farklı tipte soru var. Önce pasajı oku, sonra her soruyu kendin çözmeye çalış; ardından adım adım çözümü incele.
Pasaj.
For decades, coral reefs were studied mainly for their striking biodiversity, and their role in the wider economy went largely unnoticed. Recent research, however, has reshaped this view. Reefs act as natural breakwaters, absorbing much of the energy of incoming waves before it reaches the shore. In doing so, they shield coastal communities from storm damage and erosion that would otherwise cost billions to repair. They also sustain fisheries on which millions of people depend for food and income. Yet these same reefs are highly vulnerable: even a slight rise in sea temperature can trigger bleaching, a process in which corals expel the algae that nourish them and gradually starve. Because the benefits reefs provide are spread across so many communities, the cost of losing them is easy to underestimate until the damage is already done.
1. What is the main idea of the passage?
2. It can be inferred from the passage that the economic value of coral reefs
3. The word "shield" in the passage is closest in meaning to
Dikkat et: üç soruda da doğru cevap, pasajdaki bir cümleyi başka kelimelerle söyledi; yanlış şıkların çoğu ise pasajdaki tanıdık kelimeleri kullanarak seni yanılttı. Kanıt cümlesini bulma alışkanlığı, bu tuzakları görünmez olmaktan çıkarır.
Below is an academic passage in real exam logic and three questions of different types. First read the passage, then try to solve each question yourself; then study the step-by-step solution.
Passage.
3. The word "shield" in the passage is closest in meaning to
Note: in all three questions the correct answer said a sentence from the passage in different words; most of the wrong options, on the other hand, misled you by using familiar words from the passage. The habit of finding the evidence sentence stops these traps from being invisible.
Pasajı okumadan şıklardan kelime avlamak. En yaygın hata: soruyu görüp doğrudan şıklara bakmak ve pasajda "gördüğüm kelime" hangisindeyse onu işaretlemek. Sınav tam da bunu bekleyip çeldiricilere metindeki kelimeleri koyar. Kelime tanıdık diye şık doğru olmaz; o şık soruyu yanıtlıyor mu diye bak.
Çıkarımda aşırıya kaçmak. Çıkarım = söylenenden mantıklı bir adım. İki adım ötesine geçip pasajın desteklemediği büyük sonuçlara varma. "always, never, all, none, only, the best" gibi kesin ifadeler taşıyan şıklara özellikle şüpheyle yaklaş; metin nadiren bu kadar mutlak konuşur.
Gönderimde en yakın isme körü körüne atlamak. it/this/they için sadece en yakın ismi seçme; bulduğun ismi zamirin yerine koyup cümleyi oku. Anlam bozuluyorsa, biraz daha geriye giderek dilbilgisel ve anlamsal olarak uygun olanı bul.
Hunting for words in the options without reading the passage. The most common mistake: seeing the question, going straight to the options, and marking whichever contains a "word I saw" in the passage. The exam expects exactly this and plants text words in the distractors. An option isn't correct because a word is familiar; check whether that option answers the question.
Overreaching in inference. Inference = one logical step from what is said. Don't go two steps further and arrive at big conclusions the passage doesn't support. Be especially suspicious of options carrying absolute expressions like "always, never, all, none, only, the best"; the text rarely speaks this absolutely.
Jumping to a partially correct option. Don't mark an option right away just because its first half agrees with the passage; its second half may contradict the text. The whole option must be correct. If even a single word contradicts the passage, that option is wrong.
Answering with general knowledge. What you know about the topic may be true, but the exam only asks about what this passage says. If something is "true in reality" but "not in the passage", that option is wrong. Stay faithful only to the text.
Blindly jumping to the nearest noun in reference. For it/this/they, don't just pick the nearest noun; put the noun you found in place of the pronoun and read the sentence. If the meaning breaks, go a little further back and find the one that is suitable grammatically and semantically.
Her pasaj bloğunu bitirmeden önce şunları kendine sor:
Bu dokuz soruya "evet" diyebiliyorsan, okuma bloğunu güvenle kapatabilirsin.
Before finishing each passage block, ask yourself these:
If you can say "yes" to these nine questions, you can close the reading block with confidence.
