Kelime soruları sadece kelime bilmekle değil, kelimenin cümledeki komşularıyla nasıl birleştiğini görmekle çözülür. Bu sayfada bağlam, eşdizim ve tonu birlikte okumayı öğreneceksin.
Vocabulary questions are solved not just by knowing words, but by seeing how a word combines with its neighbours in the sentence. On this page you will learn to read context, collocation and tone together.
On the YDS and YÖKDİL, vocabulary questions ask you to find the word that fits the gap in an academic sentence in meaning, collocation and register (tone/style) all at once. The five options are usually of the same kind (all verbs, all adjectives, and so on) and their Turkish equivalents are close to one another; that is why saying "the meaning fits" is not enough. In this guide we will first look at the steps of putting your own word in the gap, determining the positive/negative tone of the sentence, and drawing a collocation clue from the preposition and noun next to it. Then we will cover the most common collocation and phrasal-verb patterns in a table, and work through three worked examples step by step with explanations in English.
Örneğin İngilizcede make a decision denir ama do a decision denmez; a strong argument doğru ama a powerful argument daha zayıftır.
In a YDS/YÖKDİL vocabulary question there is an academic sentence with a gap (----) in it. Five options are given below it; these five options are usually of the same kind: either all five are verbs, or all adjectives, or all nouns, or all phrasal verbs / collocation phrases. Your task is to choose the single word that fits the gap in meaning, in collocation, and in register (style).
This question type is not simply "word memorization". The real skill it tests is seeing how a word lives together with its neighbours in the sentence. For example, in English we say make a decision but not do a decision; a strong argument is right but a powerful argument is weaker. Even though both words translate into Turkish as "güçlü" (strong), the difference in collocation determines the correct answer.
That is why vocabulary questions must be read on three layers: (1) meaning (does the word's dictionary sense fit the context?), (2) collocation (does it combine naturally with the preposition/noun/verb next to it?), (3) tone (does it match whichever the sentence is—positive/negative, formal/everyday?). The distractors are exactly the words that stumble on one of these three layers: close in meaning but wrong in collocation, or right in meaning but opposite in tone.
Kelime sorusunda panik yapıp beş şıkkı tek tek cümleye yerleştirmek zaman kaybettirir ve çeldiriciye kanma riskini artırır. Bunun yerine şu sırayı izle:
Not. İlk adımda bulduğun "kendi kelimen" çoğu zaman doğru şıkkın eş anlamlısıdır. Şıklarda tam onu görmesen bile, en yakın olanı güvenle işaretleyebilirsin.
Panicking on a vocabulary question and plugging all five options into the sentence one by one wastes time and increases the risk of falling for a distractor. Instead, follow this order:
Note. The "own word" you found in the first step is usually a synonym of the correct option. Even if you don't see it exactly among the options, you can confidently mark the closest one.
Eşdizim, belirli kelimelerin İngilizcede birlikte kullanılmayı "tercih etmesi" demektir. Anlamca doğru görünen bir kelime, yanlış eşle geldiğinde kulağa yanlış gelir. YDS'de en sık tuzak budur: iki şık da Türkçeye aynı çevrilir ama yalnızca biri o isimle/edatla kalıplaşır.
Phrasal verb mantığı da benzerdir: fiil + edat/zarf birleşince anlam değişir (carry out = yürütmek, put off = ertelemek). Burada ipucu genelde boşluğun yanındaki edattır; edata bakıp hangi fiille kalıplaştığını hatırla.
| Kelime / Fiil | Doğru eşdizim | Yanlış (çeldirici) örneği |
|---|---|---|
| threat | pose a threat | make a threat (anlam kayar) |
| demand | meet a demand | reach a demand |
| decision | make a decision | do a decision |
| research | conduct research | make a research |
| account | take into account | get into account |
| rely | rely on | rely to |
| result | result in | result to |
| carry (phrasal) | carry out (a study) | carry off (a study) |
Bu kalıpları tek tek ezberlemek yerine, karşılaştığın her doğru cevabı "fiil/isim + hangi edat/kelime" biçiminde not al. Zamanla eşdizim sezgin gelişir ve şıkları saniyeler içinde eleyebilirsin.
Collocation means that certain words "prefer" to be used together in English. A word that looks correct in meaning sounds wrong when it comes with the wrong partner. This is the most common trap on the YDS: both options translate the same into Turkish, but only one forms a set phrase with that noun/preposition.
Phrasal verb logic is similar: when a verb combines with a preposition/adverb the meaning changes (carry out = to conduct, put off = to postpone). Here the clue is usually the preposition next to the gap; look at the preposition and recall which verb it forms a set phrase with.
| Word / Verb | Correct collocation | Wrong (distractor) example |
|---|---|---|
| threat | pose a threat | make a threat (meaning shifts) |
| demand | meet a demand | reach a demand |
| decision | make a decision | do a decision |
| research | conduct research | make a research |
| account | take into account | get into account |
| rely | rely on | rely to |
| result | result in | result to |
| carry (phrasal) | carry out (a study) | carry off (a study) |
Instead of memorizing these patterns one by one, note every correct answer you come across in the form "verb/noun + which preposition/word". Over time your sense of collocation develops and you can eliminate options within seconds.
Aşağıda üç farklı alt tip var: bağlamsal tek kelime, eşdizim ve phrasal verb. Her örnekte önce kendi kelimeni koymayı, sonra tonu ve eşdizimi kontrol etmeyi uygula.
Örnek 1 (bağlamsal tek kelime). Although the new policy was designed to reduce traffic, its impact proved to be ---- , as congestion levels barely changed over the following year.
Örnek 2 (eşdizim). Rapid industrial expansion in the region continues to ---- a serious threat to local ecosystems and water supplies.
Örnek 3 (phrasal verb). Because of insufficient funding, the committee had to ---- the launch of the pilot programme until the next fiscal year.
Below there are three different sub-types: contextual single word, collocation, and phrasal verb. In each example, apply putting your own word first, then checking the tone and the collocation.
Example 1 (contextual single word). Although the new policy was designed to reduce traffic, its impact proved to be ---- , as congestion levels barely changed over the following year.
Example 2 (collocation). Rapid industrial expansion in the region continues to ---- a serious threat to local ecosystems and water supplies.
Example 3 (phrasal verb). Because of insufficient funding, the committee had to ---- the launch of the pilot programme until the next fiscal year.
1) Sadece Türkçe anlama bakıp eşdizimi atlamak. İki şık da "yapmak" ya da "güçlü" diye çevrilebilir; ama İngilizcede yalnızca biri o isimle kalıplaşır. make a decision doğru, do a decision yanlıştır. Çeviriyle değil, kalıpla karar ver.
2) Yakın anlamlıya kanmak. ÖSYM şıkları bilerek eş/yakın anlamlı seçer (substantial / considerable / significant). Bunları ayıran şey çoğu zaman bağlam ve eşdizimdir; "ikisi de olur" hissi geldiğinde yandaki edat/isim ipucuna geri dön.
3) Tonu (olumlu/olumsuz) gözden kaçırmak. despite, although, unfortunately, fail, decline gibi işaretler cümlenin yönünü çevirir. Olumsuz bir cümleye olumlu çağrışımlı kelime koyarsan tuzağa düşersin. Boşluktan önce cümlenin işaretini oku.
1) Looking only at the Turkish meaning and skipping the collocation. Both options may translate as "yapmak" (to do/make) or "güçlü" (strong); but in English only one forms a set phrase with that noun. make a decision is right, do a decision is wrong. Decide by the set phrase, not by the translation.
2) Falling for a near-synonym. ÖSYM deliberately picks synonymous/near-synonymous options (substantial / considerable / significant). What separates them is usually the context and the collocation; when you get the feeling that "both work", go back to the clue in the neighbouring preposition/noun.
3) Overlooking the tone (positive/negative). Signals such as despite, although, unfortunately, fail, decline reverse the direction of the sentence. If you put a positively connoted word into a negative sentence, you fall into the trap. Read the sentence's signal before the gap.
Son söz. Kelime soruları hız ve sezgi işidir; sezgi de doğru cevapları "kelime + eş" biçiminde biriktirmekle gelişir. Her denemeden sonra çıkan eşdizimleri not defterine ekle.
Final word. Vocabulary questions are a matter of speed and intuition; and intuition develops by collecting correct answers in the form "word + partner". After every practice test, add the collocations that came up to your notebook.
