This page explains, in English, the logic of the dialogue completion questions that appear on the YDS and YÖKDİL and a step-by-step solving strategy; the dialogues and options are given in English.
Dialogue completion is one of the question types on the YDS and YÖKDİL that you can least afford to miss: it measures your conversational logic and functional coherence as much as your grammar. On the exam, a short four-line dialogue between two people usually has one line left blank, and you are asked to find the line that completes this gap.
Bu soru tipi salt dilbilgisi değil; konuşma mantığını, işlevsel uyumu (soru-cevap, öneri-tepki, şikayet-çözüm), dolaylı gönderimleri (this, that, then) ve register (resmi/samimi ton) tutarlılığını ölçer.
In a dialogue completion question you are given a short conversation between two people. The conversation usually consists of four lines, and one of them is left blank (shown in the text as "----"). Each of the five options is a full sentence or a full line; you are asked to choose the line that best fits the flow of the dialogue.
The gap is usually in the middle. This is a very important detail: a gap in the middle has to satisfy two conditions at once. The correct option must be a logical answer/reaction to the line before it while also making the line after it emerge meaningfully. In other words, the gap is squeezed from both directions at once.
This question type measures not merely grammar but conversational logic, functional coherence (question-answer, suggestion-reaction, complaint-solution), indirect references (this, that, then) and consistency of register (formal/casual tone). The distractors are usually related to the topic, but they either confuse the function of the gap or leave the next line meaningless/hanging. That is why the heart of the solution comes down to a single question: When I place this option, do both the previous and the following line flow naturally?
Diyalog tamamlamayı tesadüfe bırakmayın; her soruda aynı sırayı izleyin.
Don't leave dialogue completion to chance; follow the same order on every question. The steps below let you pin the gap down from both directions at once and eliminate distractors quickly.
Golden rule: The correct answer is a two-way bridge. No matter how logical an option looks, if it leaves the line after it hanging, it is wrong.
|---|---|---|
| Soru sorma / bilgi isteme | Do you know…? / How come…? / What about…? | How come you missed the meeting? |
| Cevap / açıklama (gerekçe) | That's because… / The reason is… | That's because my train was delayed. |
| Öneri | Why don't we…? / We could… / Shall we…? | Why don't we postpone it to Friday? |
| Kabul | That sounds good. / Sure, let's do that. | Good idea; Friday works for me. |
| Ret / itiraz (gerekçeyle) | I'd rather not, because… / Actually, that won't… | I'd rather not; I'm away on Friday. |
| Şikayet → çözüm önerisi | The problem is… / Then you should… | Then you should return it for a refund. |
Register (ton) notu: Aynı işlev farklı tonlarda ifade edilir. "Would you mind if I…?" resmi bir iznin işaretidir; "Can I just…?" samimidir.
Dialogues are not random sentences but chains of functions: a question is followed by an answer, a suggestion by an acceptance or refusal, a complaint by a solution. If you correctly name the gap's link in this chain, most of the options are eliminated on their own. The table below brings together the most common functions, typical language patterns and an example line.
| Function | Typical pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Asking a question / requesting information | Do you know…? / How come…? / What about…? | How come you missed the meeting? |
| Answer / explanation (reason) | That's because… / The reason is… | That's because my train was delayed. |
| Suggestion | Why don't we…? / We could… / Shall we…? | Why don't we postpone it to Friday? |
| Acceptance | That sounds good. / Sure, let's do that. | Good idea; Friday works for me. |
| Refusal / objection (with a reason) | I'd rather not, because… / Actually, that won't… | I'd rather not; I'm away on Friday. |
| Complaint → solution suggestion | The problem is… / Then you should… | Then you should return it for a refund. |
Register (tone) note: The same function is expressed in different tones. "Would you mind if I…?" signals a formal request for permission; "Can I just…?" is casual. In a manager-employee or customer-clerk dialogue a formal formula is expected; between two friends, natural, short expressions are appropriate. If you find the function correctly but miss the register, you can still slip to the wrong option.
Örnek 1.
A: I've been staring at this report for hours, but the sales figures just don't add up.
B: ----
A: That's a good point. I probably copied the wrong column from last quarter's file.
B: It happens to all of us; take a short break and check it with fresh eyes.
Örnek 2.
A: Excuse me, I bought this jacket yesterday, but the zipper is already broken.
B: I'm very sorry about that, madam. ----
A: I'd prefer a refund, actually; I don't want to risk the same problem again.
B: Of course. If you have the receipt, I can process it right away.
Örnek 3.
A: Our flight got cancelled and the next one isn't until tomorrow morning.
B: ----
A: Good thinking. Then let's find a hotel near the airport so we don't have to travel far.
B: Agreed. I'll look for one with a free shuttle service.

Sonraki replikteki this, that, then, so, one boşlukta neyin geçmiş olması gerektiğini söyler. Bu bağlacı/zamiri karşılıksız bırakan şık elenir.
En uzun/ayrıntılı şıkka kanmak. Uzun ve dolu görünen şık çoğu zaman fazladan bilgiyle akışı bozan çeldiricidir. Doğru cevap genelde kısa ve tam yerine oturandır; uzunluk asla doğruluk kanıtı değildir.
Konuyla ilgili ama işlevsiz şıkka takılmak. Çeldiriciler genellikle diyaloğun konusuyla aynı kelimeleri (aynı yer, kişi, nesne) kullanır. Ortak sözcük görünce şık doğru sanılır; oysa asıl ölçüt sözcük benzerliği değil, boşluğun işlevini yerine getirip getirmediği ve iki komşu repliği bağlayıp bağlamadığıdır. Kelime tuzağına değil, akış mantığına güven.
Looking only at the previous line. This is the most common mistake. An option may fit the previous line perfectly, but if it leaves the following line meaningless it is wrong. A gap in the middle is a two-way bridge; always test it against both neighbouring lines.
Confusing the function. Choosing an option that contains a new question when an answer is expected in the gap, or an objection when a suggestion is needed. First name the function (question/answer/suggestion/refusal), then eliminate wholesale the options that don't match that function.
Register mismatch. Putting a slangy/very casual option into a formal customer-clerk dialogue, or a stiff formal formula into two friends' chat. If the tone doesn't match, the option is wrong even if the meaning looks right.
Overlooking the reference. The this, that, then, so, one in the following line tells you what must have appeared in the gap. An option that leaves this connector/pronoun unanswered is eliminated.
Falling for the longest/most detailed option. An option that looks long and full is often a distractor that breaks the flow with extra information. The correct answer is usually short and fits exactly into place; length is never proof of correctness.
Getting stuck on an option that's on-topic but functionless. Distractors usually use the same words as the dialogue's topic (the same place, person, object). Seeing a shared word, you assume the option is correct; but the real criterion is not word similarity, it is whether the option fulfils the function of the gap and connects the two neighbouring lines. Trust the logic of the flow, not the word trap.
Before filling the gap, go through these questions:
Conclusion: In dialogue completion the correct answer is always a two-way bridge. Name the function correctly, use both neighbouring lines as constraints, and keep the register; when you do these three things, this question type turns into guaranteed points on the YDS/YÖKDİL. This type takes less time than grammar-heavy questions and, with a solid method, can be solved almost perfectly; that is why solving these questions first on the exam to gain confidence and save time is a smart strategy.
