Cümle tamamlama, YDS ve YÖKDİL'de en çok puan kaybettiren tiplerden biridir; çünkü doğru şık hem dilbilgisine hem anlama aynı anda uymak zorundadır. Bu sayfa, boşluğun mantıksal türünü bağlaçtan okumayı ve çeldiricileri sistemli elemeyi öğretir.
Sentence completion is one of the types that cost the most points in YDS and YÖKDİL; because the correct option must fit both the grammar and the meaning at the same time. This guide teaches you to read the logical type of the blank from the connector and to eliminate distractors systematically.
Cümle tamamlama soruları YDS ve YÖKDİL'de bir cümlenin yarısını verip diğer yarısını sizden ister. Şıklar tek kelime ya da bağlaç değil, özne ve yüklem içeren tam cümleciklerdir. Bu yüzden soru hem gramer hem de mantık ölçer.
Sentence completion questions in YDS and YÖKDİL give you one half of a sentence and ask you for the other half. The options are not single words or connectors but full clauses containing a subject and a verb. That is why the question measures both grammar and logic.
Although the new policy was designed to reduce traffic, ----.
In a sentence completion question you are given one half of a sentence; the other half is left blank with ----. The blank may be at the beginning, middle, or end of the sentence. Each of the five options is a full clause: it contains a subject and a verb, and is usually 8-16 words long.
This is the most critical point that separates the type from a grammar question. In a grammar question the options are single words or short connectors such as because, yet, therefore. In sentence completion, however, the option is a whole subordinate or main clause in itself.
Example stem. Although the new policy was designed to reduce traffic, ----.
This type tests two things at once: (1) grammatical agreement — tense, modality, subject-verb, structure; (2) meaning and logical consistency — the correctness of the cause-effect, contrast, or condition relationship built with the given half-sentence. The correct option satisfies both. Options that fit only the grammar but set up the meaning backwards, or that fit the meaning but do not match the tense, are distractors. The options are deliberately balanced; the correct answer is never the "longest" or "most complex" option.
You can solve sentence completion with a systematic reading, without giving in to guessing. In this type it is not speed but the right order that pays off: first you build the sentence's logic, then you eliminate the options accordingly. A candidate who starts from the options is often caught by a distractor that sounds nice but has the meaning reversed. Follow the order below.
Key trick: Fill the blank with your own sentence and then look for the closest option. This prevents the distractors from steering you.
Cümle tamamlamada en güçlü ipucu bağlantı sözcüğüdür. Bağlacı doğru okursanız, boşluğa hangi mantıksal ilişkinin geleceğini şıklara bakmadan bilirsiniz. Aşağıdaki tablo en sık çıkan bağlaçları beklenen ilişkiye göre gruplar.
| Bağlaç | Beklenen ilişki | Örnek yön |
|---|---|---|
| although, though, whereas, while, even though | Zıtlık / beklenmedik durum | Although X..., the opposite of X happened. |
| so that, therefore, thus, as a result, consequently | Sonuç / amaç | X was done, so that a result followed. |
| if, unless, provided that, as long as | Koşul | If a condition holds, a consequence follows. |
| because, since, as, due to the fact that | Neden / gerekçe | The result occurred because a cause existed. |
Dikkat: while ve as hem zaman hem zıtlık/neden anlamı taşıyabilir. Bağlacı tek başına değil, cümlenin bütün mantığıyla birlikte yorumlayın.
Bağlaç zıtlık istiyorsa, boşluk verilen yarıyla çelişen bir fikir; sonuç istiyorsa mantıksal çıktı; koşul istiyorsa koşulun gerçekleştiğinde doğacak durumu içermelidir. İlişkiyi doğru adlandırmak, doğru şıkkı çoğu zaman tek başına belirler.
In sentence completion the strongest clue is the connecting word. If you read the connector correctly, you know which logical relationship will go into the blank without looking at the options. The table below groups the most common connectors by the expected relationship.
| Connector | Expected relationship | Example direction |
|---|---|---|
| although, though, whereas, while, even though | Contrast / unexpected situation | Although X..., the opposite of X happened. |
| so that, therefore, thus, as a result, consequently | Result / purpose | X was done, so that a result followed. |
| if, unless, provided that, as long as | Condition | If a condition holds, a consequence follows. |
| because, since, as, due to the fact that | Cause / justification | The result occurred because a cause existed. |
Caution: while and as can carry both a time and a contrast/cause meaning. Interpret the connector not on its own but together with the whole logic of the sentence.
If the connector requires a contrast, the blank must contain an idea that contradicts the given half; if it requires a result, a logical outcome; if it requires a condition, the situation that will arise when the condition is met. Naming the relationship correctly often determines the right option on its own.
Örnek 1. Although the company invested heavily in renewable energy, ----.
Örnek 2. If the researchers had followed the standard procedure, ----.
Örnek 3. The medicine was administered in low doses so that ----.
Example 1. Although the company invested heavily in renewable energy, ----.
Example 2. If the researchers had followed the standard procedure, ----.
Example 3. The medicine was administered in low doses so that ----.
3. Bağlacı yanlış yorumlamak. while, as, since gibi çok anlamlı bağlaçları tek anlamına sabitlemek yanıltır. since hem "-den beri" (zaman) hem "çünkü" (neden) olabilir. Bağlacın anlamını cümlenin bütününden çıkarın.
4. Zaman/kip uyumsuzluğunu gözden kaçırmak. Özellikle koşul cümlelerinde ana cümlenin kipi şıkkı kesin sınırlar. If + had V3 gördüğünüzde geniş/gelecek zamanlı şıkları anında eleyin.
5. Uzunluğa aldanmak. "En uzun ve en detaylı şık doğrudur" yanlış bir sezgidir. Doğru şık dengelidir; uzunluk değil, dilbilgisi ve mantık uyumu belirler.
1. Looking only at grammar and skipping the meaning. More than one option can be grammatically flawless. ÖSYM does exactly this: it places a distractor that fits the grammar but sets up the logic backwards. Always ask, "does this sentence hold in meaning with the given half?"
2. Jumping to the first one that looks reasonable. As you read the options from A, do not stop at the first that seems "plausible". Check all five options; usually A or C looks "good enough" and overshadows the correct option (often further down).
3. Misinterpreting the connector. Fixing polysemous connectors such as while, as, since to a single meaning misleads you. since can mean both "from a point in time" (time) and "because" (cause). Derive the connector's meaning from the whole sentence.
4. Overlooking tense/modal mismatch. Especially in conditional sentences, the main clause's mood strictly limits the option. When you see If + had V3, eliminate present/future-tense options instantly.
5. Being deceived by length. "The longest and most detailed option is correct" is a false intuition. The correct option is balanced; it is fit in grammar and logic, not length, that decides.
Bu liste, sınav sırasında birkaç saniyede zihninizden geçirebileceğiniz bir denetim rutinidir. Başta acele edip son iki adımı atlamak, en sık puan kaybı nedenidir; özellikle seçtiğiniz şıkkı boşluğa koyup cümleyi baştan okumak, yanlış seçimlerin çoğunu daha teslim etmeden yakalatır. Her cümle tamamlama sorusundan önce ve sonra şu adımları geçirin:
This list is a checking routine you can run through your mind in a few seconds during the exam. Rushing at the start and skipping the last two steps is the most common cause of lost points; in particular, placing your chosen option in the blank and reading the sentence from the beginning catches most wrong choices before you even commit them. Run through these steps before and after every sentence completion question:
