Cloze test, tek tek kelime bilgisini değil; paragrafın bütününü okuyup anlamı takip etme becerini ölçer.
A cloze test measures not your knowledge of individual words but your ability to read a whole paragraph and follow its meaning.
Cloze test, ortak bir akademik paragrafa gömülü beş boşluğu (bağlaç, edat, kip ve eşdizim) doğru sözcüklerle tamamlaman istenen bir soru tipidir. Bu sayfada önce paragrafı okuyup sonra boşukları çözmenin sistematik yolunu, boşluk türlerini ve tam çözümlü bir örneği bulacaksın.
A cloze test is a question type in which you are asked to complete five blanks (connector, preposition, modality and collocation) embedded in a single academic paragraph with the correct words. On this page you will find the systematic way of reading the paragraph first and then solving the blanks, the types of blanks, and a fully worked example.
Cloze'da her boşukta şunlara bak:
In a cloze, at every blank check these:
In YDS and YÖKDİL, a cloze test appears not as a single sentence but as a coherent academic paragraph of about 120-180 words. Embedded within this paragraph, numbered in the form (1) ----, are five blanks. Each blank is a separate question, and beneath each are five options from A to E. The blank is shown on ÖSYM with four dashes (----).
The critical point is this: all five blanks are part of the same text. That is, the meaning you build in one sentence helps you at the next blank. If you understand the paragraph as a whole, most of the blanks fill in almost by themselves.
The blanks are distributed so as to test not a single skill but several different areas:
It is also important for time management: because the five questions lean on a single paragraph, once you read that paragraph correctly all five are solved relatively fast. That is why the cloze is one of the exam's "efficient" sections; you do not have to read five separate texts as in a reading passage, and you draw five points out of a single text. On the other hand, if you read the paragraph superficially, you risk carrying the same mistake into all five blanks at once.
Cloze'da en çok puan kaybettiren alışkanlık, ilk boşuğa gelip hemen şıklara bakmaktır. Doğru sıra tersidir: önce paragrafın tamamını oku, ana fikri yakala, sonra tek tek boşukları çöz.
Bir boşukta takılırsan onu atla, diğerlerini çöz. Sonraki boşuklardan kurduğun anlam, atladığın boşuğu netleştirir. Cloze'da boşuklar birbirini besler.
The habit that costs the most points in a cloze is coming to the first blank and looking at the options right away. The correct order is the reverse: first read the whole paragraph, catch the main idea, then solve the blanks one by one.
If you get stuck on a blank, skip it and solve the others. The meaning you build from the later blanks clarifies the one you skipped. In a cloze, the blanks feed one another.
Boşuğun hangi türde olduğunu anlamak, çözümün yarısıdır. Üç ana tür ve mantıkları:
1) Bağlaç / geçiş sözcüğü. Burada anahtar, iki düşünce arasındaki ilişkidir. Boşuğun önündeki ve sonraki cümlenin fikrini kısaca özetle, sonra ilişkiyi adlandır: zıtlık mı, sonuç mu, ekleme mi?
| İlişki | Sık geçen sözcükler | İşaret |
|---|---|---|
| Zıtlık | however, although, whereas, yet, in contrast, nevertheless | İki fikir birbirini çürütüyor/dengeliyor |
| Sonuç | therefore, thus, as a result, consequently, hence | İkinci cümle birincinin doğal çıktısı |
| Ekleme | moreover, in addition, furthermore, besides | Aynı yönde ikinci bir kanıt |
| Sebep | because, since, as, due to | İkinci cümle birincinin gerekçesi |
2) Edat ve eşdizim. Edatlar mantıkla değil, alışılmış kullanımla öğrenilir. Fiil veya sıfatın hangi edatı istediğini bilmek gerekir: depend on, responsible for, consist of, capable of, result in. Boşuktan sonraki edat, seçeneği çoğu zaman tek başına belirler.
3) Zaman ve kip tutarlılığı. Fiil boşuklarında paragrafın geneline bak. Genel bir olgu anlatılıyorsa Simple Present; tamamlanmış bir araştırma anlatılıyorsa Past veya Present Perfect beklenir. Cümledeki zaman zarfı (currently, recently, in the past) belirleyici ipucudur.
4) Yapı ve ilgi. Bazı boşuklar ilgi zamiri (which, who, whose), edilgen yapı ya da mastar/isim-fiil seçimi test eder. Burada anlamdan çok cümlenin dilbilgisel iskeletine bak: özne var mı, fiil çekimli mi, boşluk bir isim mi yoksa bir eylem mi istiyor? Örneğin bir ilgi cümlesinde insan olmayan bir varlıktan söz ediliyorsa which, kişi söz konusuysa who gerekir.
Understanding which type the blank is is half the solution. The main types and their logic:
1) Connector / transition word. Here the key is the relationship between two ideas. Briefly summarise the idea of the sentence before and after the blank, then name the relationship: contrast, result, or addition?
| Relationship | Common words | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| Contrast | however, although, whereas, yet, in contrast, nevertheless | The two ideas refute/balance each other |
| Result | therefore, thus, as a result, consequently, hence | The second sentence is the natural output of the first |
| Addition | moreover, in addition, furthermore, besides | A second piece of evidence in the same direction |
| Cause | because, since, as, due to | The second sentence is the reason for the first |
2) Preposition and collocation. Prepositions are learned not by logic but by habitual usage. You need to know which preposition a verb or adjective takes: depend on, responsible for, consist of, capable of, result in. The preposition after the blank often determines the option by itself.
3) Tense and modal consistency. For verb blanks, look at the paragraph as a whole. If a general phenomenon is described, Simple Present is expected; if a completed study is described, Past or Present Perfect. The time adverb in the sentence (currently, recently, in the past) is a decisive clue.
4) Structure and relatives. Some blanks test a relative pronoun (which, who, whose), a passive structure, or an infinitive/gerund choice. Here look at the sentence's grammatical skeleton rather than the meaning: is there a subject, is the verb conjugated, does the blank want a noun or an action? For example, in a relative clause, if a non-human entity is referred to, which is needed, and if a person, who.
Aşağıdaki akademik paragrafı ÖSYM formatında bir cloze olarak çözelim. Önce paragrafın tamamını oku, sonra her boşuğu ayrı ele alacağız.
The human body operates according to an internal clock known as the circadian rhythm, which regulates cycles of sleep and wakefulness over roughly twenty-four hours. This rhythm is (1) ---- influenced by exposure to natural light, particularly in the morning. (2) ---- artificial lighting has allowed people to remain active long after sunset, it has also disrupted these natural patterns. Prolonged exposure to screens before bed, for instance, suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone (3) ---- for signalling the onset of sleep. As a result, many people struggle to fall asleep at appropriate times. Researchers therefore recommend limiting screen use in the evening in order to (4) ---- the body's natural rhythm. Failure to do so may, (5) ----, contribute to chronic fatigue and reduced concentration during the day.
Konu: Metin, sirkadiyen ritmin ışıkla düzenlendiğini ve yapay ışığın/ekranların bu ritmi bozduğunu anlatıyor. Genel zaman Simple Present; ton bilgilendirici ve sebep-sonuç odaklı.
This rhythm is (1) ---- influenced by exposure to natural light.
(2) ---- artificial lighting has allowed people to remain active long after sunset, it has also disrupted these natural patterns.
...melatonin, a hormone (3) ---- for signalling the onset of sleep.
...limiting screen use in the evening in order to (4) ---- the body's natural rhythm.
Failure to do so may, (5) ----, contribute to chronic fatigue and reduced concentration.
Cevap anahtarı: 1-C, 2-A, 3-D, 4-B, 5-E. Dikkat et: doğru cevap her seferinde en uzun ya da aynı harf değildir; her boşuk kendi mantığıyla çözülür.
Let's solve the academic paragraph below as a cloze in ÖSYM format. First read the whole paragraph, then we will handle each blank separately.
Topic: The text describes how the circadian rhythm is regulated by light and how artificial light/screens disrupt this rhythm. The general tense is Simple Present; the tone is informative and cause-effect focused.
Answer key: 1-C, 2-A, 3-D, 4-B, 5-E. Note: the correct answer is not always the longest or the same letter; each blank is solved by its own logic.
1) Jumping to the blank without reading the paragraph. This is the cloze's trap. If you come to the first blank and start reading the options, you miss the logic the sentence builds with the next sentence. Read the whole text first.
2) Setting up the connector logic backwards. Skipping the question "Do the two sentences face the same direction, or are they opposed?" is the most expensive mistake. A wrong choice between because and although, or between therefore and however, reverses the sentence's meaning. At every connector blank, name the relationship first, then move to the options.
3) Looking at a single word's meaning instead of the collocation. All the options may look correct in meaning; the distinction lies in how that word combines with its neighbour. Even if responsible fits in meaning, it is wrong if for does not follow it. Always check the preposition and verb after the blank.
4) Overlooking tense-modal inconsistency. While the paragraph describes a general phenomenon in Simple Present, choosing a past tense just because the option "sounds nice" is a classic trap. At verb blanks, stay faithful to the paragraph's time frame.
5) Locking onto a single blank and losing time. Skip the blank you are unsure of; as you solve the other four, the meaning that builds up clarifies that blank.
Cloze'da hız, paragrafı bir kez iyi okumaktan gelir. İyi bir ilk okuma, beş boşuğun çoğunu önceden çözer.
In a cloze, speed comes from reading the paragraph well once. A good first read solves most of the five blanks in advance.
