This guide explains translation questions in English; the tested English sentences are shown bu biçimde.
Translation questions are among the YDS and YÖKDİL types that cost the most points; because the correct answer is not the most fluent Turkish but the option that conveys the source's meaning and structure completely and without spoiling the nuance. In this guide you will get to know both directions (English to Turkish and Turkish to English), and you will learn to extract the skeleton of the source sentence, to mark the modal and scope words, and to eliminate the options from three or four critical points. With worked examples you will see exactly which nuance the distractors spoil.
In YDS and YÖKDİL, translation questions are asked in two directions. The first direction is English to Turkish (EN→TR): the root sentence is given in English, and the five options are Turkish translations of that sentence. The second direction is Turkish to English (TR→EN): the root sentence is given in Turkish, and the options are in English.
The source sentence is usually a 20–35 word, academic and complex structure; that is, it contains at least one subordinate clause (condition, contrast, cause). What these questions measure is not simple vocabulary. Two things are measured: complete transfer (has every element in the sentence been carried over intact?) and nuance accuracy (has the modality, scope or logical relationship been distorted?).
Distractors are never built on single-word errors. Instead they omit a subordinate clause, shift a modal (must becomes might), enlarge a quantifier (some becomes all) or turn a condition into cause-effect. The correct option is the one that falls into none of these traps and preserves the meaning and structure completely.
That is why a translation question is not a "vocabulary" test but a comparison and verification skill. The options are very similar to one another; what creates the difference is a single word or a single structural shift.
Reading a translation question and marking the option with the "nicest Turkish" is the most common mistake. Instead, break the source down in three layers and eliminate the options through these layers.
In the TR→EN direction there is an extra layer: the grammatical accuracy of the English options (tense agreement, prepositions, articles). Match the Turkish modal suffixes in the root such as "-meli/-malı" with the correct modal verb in English.
Çeldiriciler dört ana bölgede saklanır. Bu bölgeleri tanıdığınızda, şıkları saniyeler içinde tarayabilirsiniz.
| Tuzak türü | Doğru aktarım | Çeldirici |
|---|---|---|
| Kip | "...olmalıdır / kesinlikle ..." (must) | "...olabilir" (might) — kesinlik kaybı |
| Kapsam | "araştırmaların çoğu" (most studies) | "tüm araştırmalar" (all studies) — aşırı genelleme |
| Yön | "...olduğu için..." (neden, because) | "...olursa..." (koşul, if) |
| Bütünlük | Yan cümle korunur | Yan cümle atlanır / olumsuza döner |
Distractors hide in four main zones. Once you recognise these zones, you can scan the options within seconds.
| Trap type | Correct transfer | Distractor |
|---|---|---|
| Modality | "...olmalıdır / kesinlikle ..." (must) | "...olabilir" (might) — loss of certainty |
| Scope | "araştırmaların çoğu" (most studies) | "tüm araştırmalar" (all studies) — over-generalisation |
| Direction | "...olduğu için..." (cause, because) | "...olursa..." (condition, if) |
| Completeness | The subordinate clause is preserved | The subordinate clause is omitted / turned negative |
Örnek 1 (EN→TR). Although early results seemed promising, most researchers argued that the new therapy should be tested on a larger sample before it could be recommended for widespread clinical use.
Örnek 2 (TR→EN). Ekonomistlerin çoğu, hükümet mali teşvikleri kademeli olarak azaltmadıkça enflasyonun önümüzdeki yıl da yüksek kalabileceği konusunda uyarıda bulundu.
Örnek 3 (EN→TR). Since renewable energy sources cannot yet fully replace fossil fuels, several experts insist that governments must invest heavily in storage technologies rather than abandoning coal plants overnight.

1. Kelime kelime çeviri peşinde koşmak. Şıkları tek tek sözcük eşleştirerek taramak, atlanan yan cümleyi ya da kayan mantıksal ilişkiyi gözden kaçırtır. Sözcüğe değil, bütün anlama ve yapıya bakın.
2. Kip ve kapsamı gözden kaçırmak. "gerekir" ile "olabilir", "çoğu" ile "tümü" arasındaki fark tek bir sözcükten ibarettir ama sorunun tamamını belirler. Kaynaktaki must / might / all / most gibi sözcükleri işaretlemeden şıkka geçmeyin.
3. En akıcı Türkçe'yi doğru sanmak. Çeldiriciler bilinçle akıcı ve doğal yazılır; en pürüzsüz cümle çoğu zaman bir öğeyi atladığı için pürüzsüzdür. Doğru şık bazen daha ağır durur ama eksiksizdir. Akıcılığı değil, kaynakla birebir örtüşmeyi ölçüt alın.
4. Bağlacı yok saymak. Although, because, unless, since, whereas cümlenin mantığını taşır. Bir çeldirici çoğu sözcüğü doğru çevirip yalnızca bağlacı değiştirerek (neden → koşul) tuzak kurar. Bağlaç türünü her zaman doğrulayın.
5. Kutbu kontrol etmemek. Olumlu bir ifadenin olumsuza (ya da tersine) çevrildiği çeldiriciler hızlı okuyanı yakalar. "...gerektiğini" mi, "...gerekmediğini" mi? Son okumada kutbu mutlaka teyit edin.
1. Chasing a word-for-word translation. Scanning the options by matching individual words makes you miss the omitted subordinate clause or the shifted logical relationship. Look not at the word but at the whole meaning and structure.
2. Overlooking modality and scope. The difference between "gerekir" (must) and "olabilir" (might), or between "çoğu" (most) and "tümü" (all), is a single word yet it decides the entire question. Do not move to the options without marking source words such as must / might / all / most.
3. Assuming the most fluent Turkish is correct. Distractors are deliberately written to be fluent and natural; the smoothest sentence is often smooth precisely because it has dropped an element. The correct option sometimes reads more heavily but is complete. Take exact correspondence with the source, not fluency, as your criterion.
4. Ignoring the connector. Although, because, unless, since, whereas carry the sentence's logic. A distractor sets a trap by translating most words correctly and changing only the connector (cause → condition). Always verify the connector type.
5. Not checking the polarity. Distractors in which a positive statement is turned negative (or vice versa) catch the fast reader. Is it "...gerektiğini" (that it should) or "...gerekmediğini" (that it should not)? On the final read, always confirm the polarity.
Her çeviri sorusunda, bir şıkkı işaretlemeden önce şu altı soruyu sırayla sorun:
On every translation question, ask these six questions in order before marking an option:
