Bu sayfa tamamen Türkçe anlatılır; İngilizce paragraf ve cümleler örnek olarak verilir. Amaç kelime bilmek değil, paragrafın odağını yakalayıp odaktan sapan tek cümleyi görebilmektir.
This guide is explained in English; English paragraphs and sentences are given as examples. The aim is not to know vocabulary but to catch the focus of the paragraph and to spot the single sentence that drifts away from that focus.
Anlam bütünlüğünü bozan cümle sorusu, YDS/YÖKDİL'in en çok puan kaptıran ama en öğrenilebilir tiplerinden biridir. Kısa bir paragrafta beş cümle I-V arasında numaralandırılır; senden paragrafın akışını ve konu birliğini bozan tek cümleyi bulman istenir.
The sentence that breaks the coherence question is one of the YDS/YÖKDİL types that costs the most points yet is also the most learnable. In a short paragraph, five sentences are numbered I-V; you are asked to find the single sentence that breaks the paragraph's flow and topic unity.
Paragrafın içindeki beş cümle sırayla (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V) biçiminde numaralandırılmıştır.
Bu yüzden I. cümle asla cevap olamaz. İlgisiz cümleyi her zaman II ile V arasında ara.
Diğer cümleler (II-V) I. cümlenin kurduğu odağı geliştirir: örnek verir, sebep-sonuç kurar, sonuç bağlar. İlgisiz cümle ise bu zincirin dışına düşer. Onu çıkardığında paragraf hiçbir şey kaybetmez, hatta daha akıcı okunur; bu, doğru cevabı bulduğunun en güçlü testidir.
In the coherence-breaking sentence question you face a single short paragraph. The five sentences within the paragraph are numbered in order as (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V). The options are these numbers too: I, II, III, IV, V. Your task is to find the single sentence that breaks the paragraph's topic unity and logical flow, that is, the one that does not belong there.
This is not a vocabulary or grammar question; it is a logic and coherence question. You may understand every sentence in the paragraph and still get it wrong, because what is sought is not the 'wrong sentence' but the 'sentence unrelated to the topic'. The irrelevant sentence may be grammatically flawless, even a true piece of information; it simply does not serve what that paragraph is about.
Golden rule. In a healthy paragraph sentence I is always the topic sentence: it announces what the paragraph is about and from which angle it is treated. That is why sentence I can never be the answer. Always look for the irrelevant sentence between II and V.
The other sentences (II-V) develop the focus set by sentence I: they give examples, build cause and effect, tie conclusions. The irrelevant sentence, by contrast, falls outside this chain. When you remove it the paragraph loses nothing, and even reads more smoothly; this is the strongest test that you have found the right answer.
Bu tipte hız değil disiplin kazandırır. Aşağıdaki adımları her soruda aynı sırayla uygula; birkaç denemede refleks hâline gelir.
In this type it is not speed but discipline that pays off. Apply the steps below in the same order for every question; after a few attempts it becomes a reflex.
Cümlenin başına however veya for example konur; bu, göze 'akış devam ediyor' dedirtir. Ama cümlenin içeriği ne gerçek bir zıtlık ne de gerçek bir örnektir; bağlaç yalnızca kılıf görevi görür.
| Ölçüt | İlgili cümle | İlgisiz cümle |
|---|---|---|
| Anahtar kelime | Var ve odağa hizmet eder | Var ama başka yöne çeker |
| Alt-konu | I. cümledeki odakla aynı | Farklı bir alt-konuya kayar |
| Bağlaç | Akışı gerçekten sürdürür | Sahte/boşa çalışan bağ kurar |
| Çıkarınca | Paragraf eksilir | Paragraf akıcılaşır |
ÖSYM never leaves the irrelevant sentence out in the open; it camouflages it so that it looks related to the topic. If you recognise the three classic hiding techniques, you will not fall into the trap.
1) Shared word, different sub-topic. The irrelevant sentence carries the paragraph's key word (e.g. bees, sleep, electric cars); this is why it feels 'related'. Yet it uses the same word and veers off in a completely different direction: like moving to honey's use as a sweetener in a paragraph about pollination.
2) Time/scope shift. While the paragraph describes a current process, the irrelevant sentence suddenly moves to history, a future prediction, or a different geography/group. The topic looks the same but the scope shifts.
3) False connector. however or for example is placed at the start of the sentence; this makes the eye say 'the flow continues'. But the content of the sentence is neither a real contrast nor a real example; the connector serves only as a cover.
| Criterion | Relevant sentence | Irrelevant sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Key word | Present and serves the focus | Present but pulls in another direction |
| Sub-topic | Same as the focus in sentence I | Slips to a different sub-topic |
| Connector | Genuinely continues the flow | Builds a false / empty link |
| When removed | The paragraph is diminished | The paragraph flows better |
Üç örneği aynı yöntemle çöz: önce I. cümleden odağı çıkar, sonra II-V'i bağla, bağlaç ve kapsamı kontrol et.
Örnek 1.
(I) Bees play a crucial role in agriculture by pollinating a large share of the crops humans depend on. (II) As they move from flower to flower in search of nectar, they transfer pollen and enable plants to produce fruit and seeds. (III) Honey has been used as a natural sweetener and a traditional remedy for thousands of years. (IV) Without this pollination service, the yields of many fruits, vegetables, and nuts would fall dramatically. (V) For this reason, the recent decline in bee populations has alarmed farmers and scientists alike.
Örnek 2.
(I) A growing body of research suggests that sleep is essential for consolidating what we learn during the day. (II) Many students, however, drink several cups of coffee to stay awake before important exams. (III) During deep sleep, the brain replays newly formed memories and transfers them into long-term storage. (IV) Experiments show that people who sleep after studying recall information far better than those who stay awake. (V) Consequently, sacrificing sleep in order to study longer can actually weaken rather than strengthen learning.
Örnek 3.
(I) Electric vehicles are often promoted as a cleaner alternative to conventional cars. (II) Because they run on batteries, they produce no exhaust emissions while being driven. (III) This can significantly improve air quality in crowded city centres. (IV) However, the electricity that charges them may still come from power plants that burn fossil fuels. (V) The first practical petrol-powered automobile was built in the late nineteenth century.
Solve the three examples with the same method: first extract the focus from sentence I, then link II-V, and check the connector and scope.

1) I. cümleyi cevap sanmak. I. cümle bazen genel/soyut durur ve 'konudan kopuk' gibi hissettirir. Ama o, paragrafın çatısını kuran konu cümlesidir; asla ilgisiz cümle olamaz. Şüphen I'e kayıyorsa yöntemin yanlış işliyordur; odağı yeniden I'den al.
2) Ortak kelimeye bakıp 'ilgili' sanmak. İlgisiz cümle neredeyse her zaman paragrafın anahtar kelimesini taşır — tuzağın tasarımı budur. 'Bu cümlede de arı geçiyor, demek ilgili' deme. Ölçüt kelime ortaklığı değil, odak/alt-konu ortaklığıdır.
3) Bağlaca kanmak. however, for example gibi geçişler cümleyi akışın parçası gibi gösterir.
1) Mistaking sentence I for the answer. Sentence I sometimes seems general/abstract and feels 'detached from the topic'. But it is the topic sentence that builds the paragraph's frame; it can never be the irrelevant sentence. If your suspicion drifts to I, your method is misfiring; take the focus from I again.
2) Thinking 'related' just because of a shared word. The irrelevant sentence almost always carries the paragraph's key word — that is the design of the trap. Do not say 'this sentence mentions bees too, so it is related'. The criterion is not shared words but shared focus/sub-topic.
3) Being fooled by the connector. Transitions such as however, for example make the sentence look like part of the flow. Test whether the connector really works by looking at the content: if there is no real contrast/example, the connector is false and the sentence is most likely irrelevant.
4) Confusing 'true information' with 'relevant information'. The irrelevant sentence is often a real and true statement. What you seek is not truth but belonging to that paragraph. If it is true but off-topic, that is the answer.
5) Stopping at the first drifting sentence and not checking the rest. Do not mark and move on the moment a sentence looks suspect. Link the remaining sentences to the focus too; sometimes there is a second, more strongly drifting sentence and that is the real answer. Do not decide before evaluating all five sentences.
6) Panicking and picking the hardest/longest sentence. The irrelevant sentence need not be the most complex, the longest, or the one with the most unknown words; it is often quite a simple and fluent sentence. The criterion is not difficulty but fit with the focus.
Running this list quickly in your mind during the exam takes a few seconds but protects you from the most expensive mistakes. Do not skip the last three items in particular: the removal test confirms your decision, the true-relevant distinction frees you from the false feeling of 'related', and the connector check neutralises ÖSYM's favourite trap (camouflage with however/for example). With regular practice these steps become a reflex and, as you read the paragraph, the irrelevant sentence almost jumps out at you.
