In English, in every word of two or more syllables one syllable is said stronger, longer and clearer than the others. This syllable is called the stressed syllable, and the phenomenon is called word stress. For example the word banana has three syllables (ba-na-na) but we say it as baNAna: the middle syllable bursts, the other two weaken.
Stronger
The stressed syllable is said with more breath and energy; it is the audible "beat" of the word.
Longer
Its vowel clearly lengthens: baNAAna like the middle syllable when saying it.
Clearer
The vowel stays full and crisp; unstressed syllables, on the other hand, often drop to the vague schwa /ə/ sound.
So why does it exist? English is a stress-timed language: the rhythm of speech flows by the interval between stressed syllables, not by the number of syllables. Stressed syllables are the 'beats' of the rhythm; the unstressed syllables between them compress and weaken (see Weak Forms). So stress is the fundamental element that builds the music of English. When you put the stress in the wrong place, even if your grammar and words are correct, the other person struggles to understand you.
Sometimes stress is not just 'music'; it also changes meaning. REcord (noun: a record) and reCORD (verb: to record) are spelled with the same letters but stressed on different syllables and function differently. That is why stress is vital for both intelligibility and meaning.
The Turkish parallel and why it's hard
Turkish has stress too, but it is much flatter and more predictable: as a rule the stress is usually near the last syllable (kaLEM, arkaDAŞ, though there are exceptions in place names like İstanBUL). Turkish speakers say syllables at almost equal length; there is no habit, as in English, of bursting one syllable and swallowing the others. This is exactly why a Turkish learner reads an English word 'flat': instead of PHOtograph, they stress every syllable equally or stress the wrong one. This is the most common and most noticeable pronunciation mistake.
- Çok-heceli her İngilizce kelimede tek bir ana vurgulu hece vardır; onu güçlü, uzun ve net söyleriz.
- Vurgusuz heceler zayıflar ve ünlüleri genellikle /ə/ (schwa) sesine kayar.
- Sözlükte vurgu, vurgulu heceden hemen önce gelen dik tırnak işareti ˈ ile gösterilir: /ˈbæn.ə.nə/ değil /bəˈnɑː.nə/.
- Vurgu bazen sözcük türünü değiştirir: REcord (isim) / reCORD (fiil), PREsent / preSENT.
- Bazı ekler vurguyu güvenilir biçimde çeker: -tion, -sion, -ic, -ity, -ical → vurgu ekten hemen önceki hecede.
- Bazı ekler sona vurgu koyar: -ee (employee), -eer (engineer), -ese (Japanese), -ette.
- Bir kelime ailesinde vurgu kayabilir: PHOtograph → phoTOGraphy → photoGRAPHic.
- Bileşik isimlerde vurgu genelde ilk kelimededir: a GREENhouse, a BLACKboard.
- Türkçe düz okuma alışkanlığı yüzünden Türk öğrenci sık sık yanlış heceyi vurgular; bu, anlaşılırlığı en çok bozan hatadır.
- Vurgu tek başına çalışmaz; cümle ritmiyle (Cümle Vurgusu) ve zayıf biçimlerle (Zayıf Biçimler) birlikte doğal telaffuzu kurar.
Yeni bir kelime öğrenirken hangi hecenin patladığını işaretleyerek not alın (örn. baNAna). Vurguyu kelimeyle birlikte ezberlemek, sonradan düzeltmekten çok daha kolaydır.
- Every multi-syllable English word has one main stressed syllable; we say it strong, long and clear.
- Unstressed syllables weaken and their vowels usually drop to the /ə/ (schwa) sound.
- In a dictionary the stress is shown by the upright tick mark ˈ that comes right before the stressed syllable: not /ˈbæn.ə.nə/ but /bəˈnɑː.nə/.
- Stress sometimes changes the word type: REcord (noun) / reCORD (verb), PREsent / preSENT.
- Some suffixes reliably pull the stress: -tion, -sion, -ic, -ity, -ical → stress on the syllable right before the suffix.
- Some suffixes put the stress on the end: -ee (employee), -eer (engineer), -ese (Japanese), -ette.
- In a word family the stress can shift: PHOtograph → phoTOGraphy → photoGRAPHic.
- In compound nouns the stress is usually on the first word: a GREENhouse, a BLACKboard.
- Because of the Turkish habit of reading flat, Turkish learners often stress the wrong syllable; this is the mistake that most damages intelligibility.
- Stress does not work alone; together with sentence rhythm (Sentence Stress) and weak forms (Weak Forms) it builds natural pronunciation.
When learning a new word, note it by marking which syllable bursts (e.g. baNAna). Memorising the stress together with the word is far easier than fixing it later.
Kelime vurgusunda 'olumlu/olumsuz/soru' gibi bir çekim yoktur; bunun yerine 'yapı' derken vurgunun hangi heceye düştüğünü belirleyen kalıpları kastediyoruz. Vurguyu bulmanın üç pratik adımı vardır.
- Heceleri say. Kelimeyi ünlü çekirdeklerine göre böl: com-pu-ter = 3 hece.
- Ana heceyi patlat.
|---|---|---|---|
| ˈ (üstte) | ana vurgu, hemen sonraki hecede | /əˈbaʊt/ | aBOUT |
| ˌ (altta) | ikincil vurgu | /ˌɛd.jʊˈkeɪ.ʃən/ | EDuCAtion |
| (işaret yok) | vurgusuz hece, çoğu /ə/ | /ˈbæn.ə.nə/ değil /bəˈnɑː.nə/ | zayıf heceler |
| Kelime | Doğru vurgu | Sık yanlış |
|---|---|---|
| hotel | hoTEL (2. hece) | HOtel |
| develop | deVElop (2. hece) | DEvelop / develOP |
| comfortable | COMfortable (1. hece, üstelik 3 hece: /ˈkʌmf.tə.bəl/) | comFORtable |
| interesting | INteresting (1. hece) | inteRESting |
Word stress has no 'positive/negative/question' inflection; instead, by 'structure' we mean the patterns that determine which syllable the stress falls on. There are three practical steps to find the stress.
- Count the syllables. Split the word by its vowel nuclei: com-pu-ter = 3 syllables.
- Burst the main syllable. Say one syllable long and clear, weaken and swallow the others.
- Verify in the dictionary. ˈ marks the syllable right after it as the main stress.
Step 1 — Count the syllables
First split the word into its syllables. Each syllable has one vowel sound. com-pu-ter = 3 syllables, im-POR-tant = 3 syllables, beau-ti-ful = 3 syllables. Single-syllable words have no stress problem (dog, run, big).
Step 2 — Find and burst the main stressed syllable
Step 3 — Verify in the dictionary
If you are unsure, look in the dictionary. In IPA notation the syllable right after the ˈ mark is the main stress. /bəˈnɑː.nə/: because ˈ is before 'nɑː', the stress is on the 'na' syllable → baNAna. The small ˌ mark below is the secondary stress.
| Mark | Meaning | Example IPA | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| ˈ (on top) | main stress, on the next syllable | /əˈbaʊt/ | aBOUT |
| ˌ (at the bottom) | secondary stress | /ˌɛd.jʊˈkeɪ.ʃən/ | EDuCAtion |
| (no mark) | unstressed syllable, mostly /ə/ | /ˈbæn.ə.nə/ not /bəˈnɑː.nə/ | weak syllables |
| Word | Correct stress | Common error |
|---|---|---|
| hotel | hoTEL (2nd syllable) | HOtel |
| develop | deVElop (2nd syllable) | DEvelop / develOP |
| comfortable | COMfortable (1st syllable, and 3 syllables: /ˈkʌmf.tə.bəl/) | comFORtable |
| interesting | INteresting (1st syllable) | inteRESting |
Vurgunun kendisi zaten bir telaffuz olgusudur; bu bölümde vurgulu ve vurgusuz hecenin fiziksel olarak nasıl farklılaştığını ve ek-tabanlı vurgu kurallarını toplu görüyoruz.

Stress itself is already a pronunciation phenomenon; in this section we see all together how a stressed and unstressed syllable physically differ, and the suffix-based stress rules.
How does a stressed syllable 'burst'? — Three features
| Feature | Stressed syllable | Unstressed syllable |
|---|---|---|
| Length | longer (LOOO) | short |
| Pitch | usually higher | flat/low |
| Vowel quality | full and clear (long /iː/, /ɑː/ etc.) | weak, mostly /ə/ schwa or /ɪ/ |
| Loudness | stronger/clearer | soft |

| -able (çoğu) | comfort → COMfortable | usually doesn't disturb the root stress |
Kelime vurgusu her konuşmada devrededir; ama bazı durumlarda özellikle kritik hale gelir. En yaygından özele doğru başlıca kullanım alanları:
1) Anlaşılır olmak (en temel işlev)
2) İsim–fiil ayrımı yapmak
3) Doğru kelimeyi seçmek (karışan çiftler)
4) Bileşik isim ile öbeği ayırmak
5) Akademik ve mesleki güvenilirlik
Word stress is in play in every conversation; but in some cases it becomes especially critical. The main uses, from the most common to the specific:
1) Being understood (the most basic function)
2) Distinguishing noun–verb
3) Choosing the right word (confusable pairs)
4) Distinguishing a compound noun from a phrase
5) Academic and professional credibility
Zaman ifadeleri yerine kelime vurgusunda işimize yarayan şey, vurgunun yerini önceden tahmin etmeyi sağlayan yapısal ipuçlarıdır: ek, kelime türü ve kelime uzunluğu. Aşağıdaki tablo bu ipuçlarını toplar.
| İpucu (görürseniz) | Vurgu tahmini | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| -tion, -sion, -cian | ekten önceki hece | information → inforMAtion, musician → muSIcian |
| -ic, -ical | ekten önceki hece | dramatic → draMAtic, magical → MAgical |
| -ity, -ety | ekten önceki hece | society → soCIety, university → uniVERsity |
| -ee, -eer, -ese, -ette | ekin kendisi (son) | trainee → traiNEE, cassette → casSETTE |
| iki-heceli isim (çoğu) | 1. hece | TAble, WINdow, MARket |
| iki-heceli fiil (çoğu) | 2. hece | reLAX, deCIDE, forGET |
| bileşik isim | 1. kelime | BUS stop, TOOTHbrush |
| deyimsel fiil (phrasal verb) vurgusu | genelde parçacık (particle) | look UP, turn ON (fiil öbeği); ama isim hâli: a CHECKup |
Instead of time expressions, what helps us with word stress is structural clues that let you predict the position of stress: the suffix, the word type and the word length. The table below gathers these clues.
| Clue (if you see) | Stress prediction | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -tion, -sion, -cian | the syllable before the suffix | information → inforMAtion, musician → muSIcian |
| -ic, -ical | the syllable before the suffix | dramatic → draMAtic, magical → MAgical |
| -ity, -ety | the syllable before the suffix | society → soCIety, university → uniVERsity |
| -ee, -eer, -ese, -ette | the suffix itself (end) | trainee → traiNEE, cassette → casSETTE |
| two-syllable noun (most) | 1st syllable | TAble, WINdow, MARket |
| two-syllable verb (most) | 2nd syllable | reLAX, deCIDE, forGET |
| compound noun | 1st word | BUS stop, TOOTHbrush |
| phrasal verb stress | usually the particle | look UP, turn ON (verb phrase); but the noun form: a CHECKup |
Word stress is not only a 'right/wrong' matter; it also carries subtle layers of meaning and style. Here are the nuances to watch.
1) Stress changes the type, but not every pair
The noun/verb stress difference is common (REcord/reCORD, INcrease/inCREASE) but does not exist in all noun-verb pairs. Words like report, result, respect, answer, promise are said with the same stress as both noun and verb. So memorising the rule as 'stress changes in every noun-verb' is misleading; it only holds for a specific group.
2) Stress shifts by the root in a word family
Even if you stress a word correctly, the stress can shift in a word derived from it. You need to learn this as a 'family'; knowing the stress of one word does not guarantee the whole family.
3) Regional differences (British / American)
In some words British and American English stress different syllables. Both are correct; it is important to keep whichever norm you adopt consistent.
Her heceye eşit basmak, dil bilginiz kusursuz olsa bile konuşmanızı anında “yabancı” gösterir. Önce tek bir heceyi güçlü söylemeyi, sonra ötekileri zayıflatmayı hedefleyin.
The Turkish and English stress systems are fundamentally different. Turkish is close to syllable-timed: syllables are said at relatively equal length and the stress is relatively light, mostly near the last syllable. English, on the other hand, is stress-timed: stressed syllables burst, and the syllables between compress and weaken. This difference is the root cause of Turkish learners reading English 'flat'.
Turkish
Syllables are relatively equal in length; the stress is light and mostly near the end. Even an unstressed syllable is said clearly.
English
The stressed syllable bursts; the syllables between compress and are swallowed into a schwa. The rhythm flows in beats.
- In Turkish the stress is light; in English the stressed syllable is clearly long and strong.
- In Turkish the unstressed syllable is also said clearly; in English the unstressed syllable is swallowed, drifting to a schwa (/ə/).
- Turkish stress is usually near the end; in English the stress can be at the start, middle or end depending on the word.
- In Turkish stress does not change the word type; in English it can (REcord/reCORD).
- Turkish learners tend to press every syllable equally; this is the most noticeable signal of a 'foreign accent'.
Pressing every syllable equally makes your speech instantly sound "foreign", even if your grammar is flawless. Aim first to say a single syllable strongly, then to weaken the others.
Kelime vurgusu, telaffuzun diğer katmanlarıyla sık karıştırılır. Farkı görmek, hepsini yerli yerinde kullanmayı sağlar.

Aşağıdaki hatalar, Türkçe konuşanlarda en sık ve en fark edilir olanlardır. Her birinde neden yanlış olduğu tam olarak açıklanmıştır.
The mistakes below are the most common and most noticeable among Turkish speakers. Each explains exactly why it is wrong.
Vurgu kuralları güçlüdür ama İngilizce ödünç aldığı binlerce kelime yüzünden istisnalarla doludur. En önemli istisna ve özel durumlar:
The stress rules are strong, but because of the thousands of words English has borrowed it is full of exceptions. The most important exceptions and special cases:
Günlük konuşmada doğru vurgu, sizi 'anlaşılır' ile 'anlaşılmaz' arasında ayıran çizgidir. Aşağıda sık geçen günlük kelimelerin doğru vurgusu var:
In everyday speech, correct stress is the line separating you between 'understood' and 'not understood'. Below are the correct stresses of common everyday words:
Akademik ve mesleki ortamlarda uzun, çok-heceli kelimeler çoktur (analysis, hypothesis, methodology, significant) ve bunların vurgusunu doğru yerleştirmek, konuşmacının güvenilirliğini doğrudan etkiler. Sunum, tez savunması veya iş toplantısında yanlış vurgulanan tek bir teknik terim bile dikkat dağıtır. Yazıda vurgu 'görünmez' olsa da, sesli sunumda aynı metin vurguyla hayat bulur.
- 'economic' → -ic kuralı: ecoNOMic (vurgu -ic'ten önceki hecede).
- 'analysis' → aNAlysis, vurgu 2. hecede; ama 'analytical' → anaLYtical, vurgu kayar.
- 'significant' → siGNIficant, vurgu 2. hecede.
- 'development' → deVElopment, -ment eki vurguyu kaydırmaz.
- Uzun teknik terimlerde yanlış vurgu 'kısa bir gecikme' yaratır ve otoriteyi zedeler — anlaşılırlığın ötesinde bir üslup meselesidir.
- Metin, vurgunun akademik ortamda neden 'yazımla eşit ciddiyette' ele alınması gerektiğini vurgular.
In academic and professional settings there are many long, multi-syllable words (analysis, hypothesis, methodology, significant) and placing their stress correctly directly affects the speaker's credibility. In a presentation, thesis defence or business meeting, even one mis-stressed technical term is distracting. Although stress is 'invisible' in writing, in a spoken presentation the same text comes to life through stress.
- 'economic' → the -ic rule: ecoNOMic (stress on the syllable before -ic).
- 'analysis' → aNAlysis, stress on the 2nd syllable; but 'analytical' → anaLYtical, the stress shifts.
- 'significant' → siGNIficant, stress on the 2nd syllable.
- 'development' → deVElopment, the -ment suffix does not shift the stress.
- In long technical terms wrong stress creates 'a short delay' and damages authority — a matter of style beyond intelligibility.
- The text stresses why, in an academic setting, stress should be treated 'with equal seriousness to spelling'.
- 'HO-tel' vs 'ho-TEL': Türkçe düz-vurgu alışkanlığının doğrudan İngilizceye taşınması, hikâyenin çatışmasını kuruyor.
- 'REcord / reCORD': isim-fiil vurgu farkının klasik örneği metne yerleştirildi.
- '-tion geri çeker': eduCAtion, information, deCIsion ile ek kuralı somutlaştırıldı.
- 'PHOtograph → phoTOGrapher → photoGRAPHic': aynı ailede vurgu kayması ('vurgu dans ediyor' imgesiyle).
- 'ˈ işareti': sözlükte vurguyu bulmanın pratik yolu öyküye dokundu.
- Sonuç: dil bilgisi/kelime değişmeden yalnızca vurgu düzelince anlaşılırlığın açılması — bölümün ana tezi.
- Zayıf heceleri 'yutmak' (swallowing weak ones) ifadesi, vurgunun Zayıf Biçimler ile bağını sezdiriyor.
- 'HO-tel' vs 'ho-TEL': the Turkish flat-stress habit carried directly into English sets up the story's conflict.
- 'REcord / reCORD': the classic example of the noun-verb stress difference is placed in the text.
- '-tion pulls back': the suffix rule is made concrete with eduCAtion, information, deCIsion.
- 'PHOtograph → phoTOGrapher → photoGRAPHic': stress shift within the same family (with the 'stress dances' image).
- 'the ˈ mark': the practical way to find the stress in a dictionary is woven into the story.
- The conclusion: intelligibility opening up when only the stress is fixed, without any change in grammar/vocabulary — the section's main thesis.
- The phrase 'swallowing' the weak syllables hints at the link between stress and Weak Forms.

Neden?Vurguyu -tion'dan hemen önceki heceye koyarsınız (eduCAtion). Çünkü -tion güvenilir bir 'vurgu çeken' ektir; ekin kendisi zayıf söylenir.
- 'banana' kelimesinde neden sadece bir 'a' net, diğer ikisi bulanık söylenir?Sadece vurgulu hece (NA) net ve uzun söylenir; vurgusuz hecelerin ünlüleri schwa /ə/'ye kayarak zayıflar. İngilizce vurgu-zamanlı bir dil olduğu için vurgusuz heceler yutulur.
- 'a GREENhouse' ile 'a green HOUSE' arasındaki fark yalnızca vurgu mu? Anlamı nasıl değişir?Evet, temel fark vurgudur. GREENhouse (vurgu ilk kelimede) = sera; green HOUSE (vurgu ikinci kelimede) = yeşil renkli ev. Vurgu, bileşik ismi öbekten ayırır.
- Neden 'photograph' ve 'photography' kelimelerinde vurgu farklı hecededir?Çünkü '-graphy' eki vurguyu kendinden önceki heceye çeker (phoTOGraphy), oysa 'photograph' isminde vurgu baştadır (PHOtograph). Aynı kökten türeseler de ek, vurgu yerini değiştirir.
The questions below test not the rule but understanding: has the meaning and function of stress really been grasped?
- 'REcord' and 'reCORD' are spelled with the same letters. What makes them different and what is that for?The stressed syllable differs (1st syllable = noun, 2nd syllable = verb). This difference determines the word's type and meaning; even though the spelling is the same, in speech the two are distinguished.
- When you see the -tion suffix in a word, what do you do for the stress? Why?You put the stress on the syllable right before -tion (eduCAtion). Because -tion is a reliable 'stress-pulling' suffix; the suffix itself is said weakly.
- In the word 'banana', why is only one 'a' clear and the other two said blurry?Only the stressed syllable (NA) is said clear and long; the vowels of the unstressed syllables weaken, drifting to schwa /ə/. Because English is a stress-timed language, unstressed syllables are swallowed.
- Is the difference between 'a GREENhouse' and 'a green HOUSE' only the stress? How does the meaning change?Yes, the basic difference is the stress. GREENhouse (stress on the first word) = a greenhouse; green HOUSE (stress on the second word) = a green-coloured house. The stress distinguishes the compound noun from the phrase.
- Why is the stress on a different syllable in 'photograph' and 'photography'?Because the '-graphy' suffix pulls the stress to the syllable before it (phoTOGraphy), whereas in the noun 'photograph' the stress is at the start (PHOtograph). Even though they derive from the same root, the suffix changes the stress position.

Görev: Kendinizi ve gününüzü anlatan 6–8 cümlelik kısa bir metin (veya sesli kayıt) hazırlayın; içinde en az şunları kullanın: (1) bir -tion ekli kelime, (2) bir isim-fiil vurgu çifti (örn. record/present/increase), (3) bir bileşik isim (greenhouse, bus stop vb.), (4) -ic veya -ity ekli bir kelime. Her birinde vurgulu heceyi BÜYÜK harfle işaretleyin.
Rehber sorular: Hangi kelimeleri seçtiniz? Her birinde vurgu neden o hecede? İsim-fiil çiftinizde vurgu türü nasıl değiştiriyor? Bir kelimeyi sözlükten kontrol ettiniz mi — beklediğiniz yerde miydi?
- Kısa metin üretin ve vurguları işaretleyin.Every morning I check the news to see if sales will INcrease. (isim) My job is to reCORD customer feedback (fiil) and write a short rePORT. I studied ecoNOMic policy (-ic) at uniVERsity (-ity), so I enjoy aNAlysis. In the evening I relax in my GREENhouse (bileşik isim) and take a PHOto of my plants. It's a comfortable, quiet life. — Vurgular: INcrease (isim), reCORD (fiil), ecoNOMic, uniVERsity, GREENhouse, PHOto.
Task: Prepare a short 6–8 sentence text (or audio recording) about yourself and your day; use at least the following in it: (1) a word with a -tion suffix, (2) a noun-verb stress pair (e.g. record/present/increase), (3) a compound noun (greenhouse, bus stop, etc.), (4) a word with a -ic or -ity suffix. Mark the stressed syllable in CAPITALS in each.
Guiding questions: Which words did you choose? Why is the stress on that syllable in each? How does the stress change the type in your noun-verb pair? Did you check a word in the dictionary — was it where you expected?
- Produce a short text and mark the stresses.Every morning I check the news to see if sales will INcrease. (noun) My job is to reCORD customer feedback (verb) and write a short rePORT. I studied ecoNOMic policy (-ic) at uniVERsity (-ity), so I enjoy aNAlysis. In the evening I relax in my GREENhouse (compound noun) and take a PHOto of my plants. It's a comfortable, quiet life. — Stresses: INcrease (noun), reCORD (verb), ecoNOMic, uniVERsity, GREENhouse, PHOto.
(4) Tapping: uzun kelimeleri ritmle vurma. Zayıf hecelerin schwa'ya kaymasını (Zayıf Biçimler) mutlaka birlikte çalıştırın; yoksa vurgu 'yarım' kalır.
Concept-check (CCQ) examples: When you say 'REcord', is this a noun or a verb? (noun) In the word 'education', is -tion or CA strong? (CA) Is 'green HOUSE' a greenhouse or a green house? (a green house). These questions test understanding, not the rule.
Activity ideas: (1) Stress dictation: the teacher says a word, students write only the stressed syllable in capitals. (2) Word family ladder: PHOtograph → phoTOGrapher → photoGRAPHic is written on the board, students mark the stress. (3) Minimal stress pairs: a noun-verb game with REcord/reCORD cards. (4) Tapping: tapping long words to the rhythm. Be sure to practise the weak syllables drifting to schwa (Weak Forms) together as well; otherwise the stress stays 'half-done'.
- Çok-heceli her İngilizce kelimede tek bir ana vurgulu hece vardır; onu uzun, güçlü ve net söyleriz.
- Vurgusuz heceler zayıflar; ünlüleri genelde schwa /ə/'ye kayar. 'Net ünlü = vurgulu, bulanık ünlü = vurgusuz.'
- Sözlükte ˈ işaretinden hemen sonraki hece ana vurguludur (/bəˈnɑː.nə/ → baNAna).
- Vurgu bazen sözcük türünü/anlamı değiştirir: REcord/reCORD, PREsent/preSENT, INcrease/inCREASE.
- Güvenilir ek kuralları: -tion/-sion/-ic/-ical/-ity/-ious → vurgu ekten önceki hecede; -ee/-eer/-ese/-ette → vurgu ekin kendisinde (sonda).
- Bir kelime ailesinde vurgu kayar: PHOtograph → phoTOGraphy → photoGRAPHic. Aileyi bir bütün öğrenin.
- Bileşik isimlerde vurgu ilk kelimede (GREENhouse); bu, öbekten (green HOUSE) ayırır.
- Türkçe düz-okuma alışkanlığı yüzünden yanlış hece vurgulamak ve her heceyi eşit basmak en sık hatalardır.
- İstisnalar (hotel, police, politics/political) tek tek, sözlükle öğrenilir; ek kuralları 'iki heceli isim/fiil' eğiliminden daha güvenilirdir.
- Vurgu yalnız çalışmaz: cümle ritmi (Cümle Vurgusu) ve zayıf biçimlerle (Zayıf Biçimler) birlikte doğal telaffuzu kurar.
- Every multi-syllable English word has one main stressed syllable; we say it long, strong and clear.
- Unstressed syllables weaken; their vowels usually drift to schwa /ə/. 'Clear vowel = stressed, blurry vowel = unstressed.'
- In a dictionary the syllable right after the ˈ mark is the main stress (/bəˈnɑː.nə/ → baNAna).
- Stress sometimes changes the word type/meaning: REcord/reCORD, PREsent/preSENT, INcrease/inCREASE.
- Reliable suffix rules: -tion/-sion/-ic/-ical/-ity/-ious → stress on the syllable before the suffix; -ee/-eer/-ese/-ette → stress on the suffix itself (at the end).
- In a word family the stress shifts: PHOtograph → phoTOGraphy → photoGRAPHic. Learn the family as a whole.
- In compound nouns the stress is on the first word (GREENhouse); this distinguishes it from the phrase (green HOUSE).
- Because of the Turkish flat-reading habit, stressing the wrong syllable and pressing every syllable equally are the most common mistakes.
- Exceptions (hotel, police, politics/political) are learned one by one with a dictionary; the suffix rules are more reliable than the 'two-syllable noun/verb' tendency.
- Stress does not work alone: together with sentence rhythm (Sentence Stress) and weak forms (Weak Forms) it builds natural pronunciation.
