Uzun pasaj yoktur.
  • Sorular her modülde sabit sırayla gelir: önce Craft and Structure (Words in Context, Text Structure and Purpose, Cross-Text), sonra Information and Ideas (Central Ideas, Command of Evidence, Inferences), sonra Expression of Ideas (Rhetorical Synthesis, Transitions), en sonda Standard English Conventions (Boundaries, Form-Structure-Sense). Her tip kendi içinde kolaydan zora dizilir.
  • Yaklaşık ağırlıklar: Craft and Structure yüzde 28, Information and Ideas yüzde 26, Standard English Conventions yüzde 26, Expression of Ideas yüzde 20.
  • Yanlış cevap puan götürmez. Boş bırakılmaz.

0.2 Her soruda dört adım

  1. Soru kökünü önce oku. Soru tipi, metni nasıl okuyacağını belirler. "most nearly mean" için sadece o cümle; "main purpose" için bütün; "weaken" için varsayım.
  2. Metni görevle oku, geçiş sözcüklerini işaretle. however, yet, but, rather than, not X but Y, therefore, thus, for example.

Fark her zaman şu beş eksenden birindedir:

EksenSorulacak soruTipik çeldirici
KapsamŞık metnin tamamını mı, bir parçasını mı kapsıyor? Metinden daha geniş bir iddia mı?Tek paragrafın fikri ana fikir diye sunulur; "forests" yerine "all ecosystems"
YönNeden ve sonuç, destek ve zayıflatma, Text 1 ve Text 2 yer değiştirmiş mi?Geçmişi açıklayan kayıt "geleceği tahmin eder" diye sunulur
Derece"suggests, may, partly" yerine "proves, always, entirely" mi?"overturns" oysa metin "refines"
ÖzneFiilin öznesi doğru mu? Yazar mı, eleştirmen mi, araştırmacı mı?Yazarın aktardığı görüş yazarın görüşü sanılır
Fiil ailesiİşlev fiili (illustrates, qualifies, replaces) metindeki yön sözcüğüyle uyumlu mu?"refines" oysa metin "inverts"
Bu kısayollar zor modülde çalışmaz: en uzun şık doğrudur; mutlak ifadeli şık yanlıştır; metinde geçen sözcüğü içeren şık doğrudur. Zor sorularda College Board doğru cevabı başka sözcüklerle, yanlış cevabı metnin sözcükleriyle yazar. Tersi de kural değildir: "en ılımlı ifade doğrudur", "en genel şık doğrudur", "soyut yazılan şık doğrudur" diye eleme yapma; "may" içeren bir şık da yeni neden uydurabilir, "all" içeren bir şık bütün örnekleri kapsayan kanıtla doğru olabilir. Çıkarımın metinde birebir yazması da gerekmez; kanıt birden fazla cümleye yayılabilir, "aynı sözcük yok, o hâlde yanlış" deme.

0.4 Soru kökünden tipi tanıma (ilk iki saniye)

Soru kökünde geçen ifadeTipMetni nasıl oku

"main idea", "According to the text", "Based on the text, what is true"Central Ideas and Detailsİlk cümlede yaygın görüş var mı; dönüş bağlacından sonrası; son cümle otomatik cevap değildir

0.5 Zor modülün desenleri ve takılınca ne yapılır

  • Doğru cevap soyut, yanlış cevap somut yazılır. Zor modülde doğru şık metnin fikrini genel ve başka sözcüklerle ("a tool for coordinating action") söyler; çeldiriciler metinden alınmış somut sözcükleri ("credibility", "stockpile") taşır.

Ama not, only, some, most, may, before, after, rather than gibi ilişki kuran sözcükleri asla atlama; cevabın yönünü bunlar değiştirir.

1.1 Words in Context

Soru kökleri "Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?" (boşluk) ve "As used in the text, what does the word X most nearly mean?"

Her soruda boşluğu çözen bir tanım cümlesi vardır: iki noktadan sonrası, tire içi, "far from", "not X but Y", "rather than", "unlike".

Yöntem

  1. Soru kökünü oku, boşluğu bul.
  2. Boşluğun etrafında tanımı ara: iki nokta, tire, noktalı virgül sonrası, karşıtlık bağlacı. Tanım genellikle boşluktan sonra gelir.
  3. Olumsuzlama kalıbını kontrol et: "anything but ___", "far from ___", "less ___ than", "not ___". Varsa boşluğa tanımın tersi gelir.
  4. Boşluğa kendi basit sözcüğünü koy (Türkçe olabilir). Sonra şıklara bak.
  5. Şıkların yönünü (olumlu/olumsuz, artış/azalış) ve tonunu (övgü/eleştiri) tahminle karşılaştır.
  6. İki yakın anlamlı şık kaldıysa "neye karşı, hangi nesneyle" sorusunu sor.

Tuzaklar Doğru alan yanlış yön (distorted/inflated); doğru ton yanlış nesne (exacting/fastidious); olumsuzlama kalıbını atlayıp tanımın kendisini seçmek; bilinmeyen uzun sözcüğe kaçmak; "most nearly mean" sorularında sözcüğün sözlükteki ilk anlamını seçmek.

Örnek 1.1-A (boşluk, iki noktalı tanım)
The committee's report was anything but ______: it named the officials responsible, listed the dates of each failure, and recommended specific penalties.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word?

  1. A) thorough
  2. B) evasive
  3. C) punitive
  4. D) belated
Analiz. Tanım iki noktadan sonra: isim verir, tarih verir, ceza önerir. Yani rapor açık ve doğrudan. Kalıp "anything but ___" olduğu için boşluğa bunun tersi gelir: kaçamak. B evasive. A thorough tanımla uyuşur ama "anything but thorough" cümleyi tersine çevirir; olumsuzlama tuzağı. C punitive raporun bir özelliğidir (ceza önerir) ama "anything but punitive" yine ters. D belated (gecikmiş) hakkında bilgi yok. Taktik: "anything but" görünce boşluğun soluna "NOT" yaz; tanımın zıttını ara.
Örnek 1.1-B (boşluk, yakın anlamlı şıklar)
Although the two historians drew on the same archive, their conclusions were strikingly ______: one saw the treaty as a triumph of diplomacy, the other as a surrender dressed in ceremonial language.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word?

  1. A) divergent
  2. B) tentative
  3. C) derivative
  4. D) equivocal
Analiz. "Although ... same archive" karşıtlık kurar: aynı kaynak, farklı sonuç. İki nokta sonrası iki zıt yorum verir. Tahmin: "farklı, zıt". A divergent.
Örnek 1.1-C ("most nearly mean", bilinen sözcüğün nadir anlamı)
The new regulation was meant to arrest the decline in river water quality, which had worsened every year since the mill opened.

As used in the text, what does the word "arrest" most nearly mean?

  1. A) detain
  2. B) halt
  3. C) attract
  4. D) investigate
Analiz. Nesne "the decline": bir düşüş tutuklanmaz, durdurulur. B halt. A detain sözlükteki ilk anlam (polis anlamı); nesne insan olmadığı için düşer. C attract ("arresting beauty" çağrışımı) bağlama uymaz. D metinde yok. Taktik: "most nearly mean" sorularında altı çizili sözcüğü sil, yerine her şıkkı koyup cümleyi oku; nesneyle uyuşan tek şık kalır. Sözcüğün en bilinen anlamı zor sorularda neredeyse hiç doğru değildir.
Sık karıştırılan yakın anlamlılar (nesnesiyle ezberle). exacting = yüksek standart talep eden (sınav, hoca) / fastidious = düzen ve temizlikte titiz (kıyafet, mutfak) / punctilious = usul ve nezakete harfiyen bağlı (protokol) / meticulous = ayrıntıda dikkatli (nötr) / scrupulous = vicdanlı, dürüst / painstaking = emek yoğun. ambiguous = birden çok anlama açık (ifade) / ambivalent = karışık duygulu (kişi) / equivocal = kasten belirsiz. tenuous = zayıf, incecik (bağ, kanıt) / tentative = geçici, çekingen (plan, adım). undermine = altını oymak / underscore = altını çizmek, vurgulamak. mitigate = hafifletmek / militate against = aleyhine işlemek. discrete = ayrı / discreet = ihtiyatlı.
Örnek 1.1-D ("logical and precise": mantıklı iki şıktan kesin olanı)
The study's sample was too small to ______ the hypothesis; at most, the results hint that a larger trial would be worth running.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word?

  1. A) mention
  2. B) confirm
  3. C) describe
  4. D) consider
Analiz. Soru kökündeki "precise" sözcüğü önemlidir: birden fazla şık cümleyi bozmaz, ama yalnız biri bağlamın istediği kesinliktedir. "at most ... hint" ifadesi, örneklemin yapamadığı şeyin kanıtlamak olduğunu söyler. B confirm. Taktik: İki şık da "olur" gibi geliyorsa cümledeki derece ifadesine bak ("at most", "merely", "fully", "barely"); boşluk o derecenin karşılığıdır.

Örnek 1.1-E (olumsuzlama + iki noktalı açıklama)
The committee's report was anything but ______: it named the officials responsible, listed the dates of each failure, and recommended specific penalties.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word?
  1. A) evasive
  2. B) thorough
  3. C) punitive
  4. D) belated
Analiz. İki noktadan sonrası açıklık ve doğrudanlık gösterir; "anything but" boşluktaki özelliği reddeder. Rapor kaçamak değildir: A. B ayrıntılılığı reddederdi, oysa liste tam da ayrıntılı; C cezalandırıcılığı reddederdi, oysa rapor ceza öneriyor; D gecikmeyle ilgili, zaman bilgisi yok. Tuzak: boşluğa tanımın kendisini (thorough) koymak; olumsuzlama kalıbını görmeyen öğrenci B'ye gider.
Örnek 1.1-F (iki açık görüş ile belirsizlik ayrımı)
Although the two historians drew on the same archive, their conclusions were strikingly ______: one saw the treaty as a triumph of diplomacy, while the other described it as a surrender disguised by ceremony.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word?
  1. A) tentative
  2. B) derivative
  3. C) divergent
  4. D) equivocal
Analiz. Aynı kaynak, birbirinden uzaklaşan iki yorum: C. A kararsız sonuç gerektirir, oysa iki görüş de net; B başka çalışmadan türeme demektir; D tek bir görüşün belirsiz olması demektir. İki kişinin net ama zıt görüşleri, "belirsizlik" değildir. Tuzak: equivocal ile divergent'ı aynı olumsuz torbaya atmak; anlam boyutu farklı.
Örnek 1.1-G ("most nearly mean": sözcüğün nesnesine bak)
The new regulation was intended to arrest the decline in river water quality, which had worsened each year since the mill opened.
As used in the text, what does "arrest" most nearly mean?
  1. A) detain
  2. B) attract
  3. C) investigate
  4. D) halt
Analiz. "arrest" fiilinin nesnesi "the decline".

1.2 Text Structure and Purpose

Soru kökleri "Which choice best describes the main purpose of the text?", "Which choice best describes the function of the underlined sentence in the text as a whole?", "Which choice best describes the overall structure of the text?"

  2. Metindeki yön sözcüğünü bul: however, but, instead, rather than, inverts, not X but Y (yer değiştirici); also, in addition, though, partly, to be sure (koruyucu).
  3. Şıkların fiilini oku, nesnesini henüz okuma. Fiili iki aileye ayır: koruyucu (refines, qualifies, complicates, adds, builds on, concedes) ve yer değiştirici (inverts, replaces, relocates, overturns, rejects). Yön sözcüğüyle uyuşmayan aile düşer.
  4. Kalan şıkların nesnesini metinle doğrula.
  5. Main purpose sorularında şık bütünü kapsamalı; iki parçalı metinde (karşılaştır + yargı) tek parçayı anlatan şık düşer.

Tuzaklar İçerik doğru fiil yanlış; metinde olmayan zaman çizgisi ("gradually became"); yazarın aktardığı görüşü yazarın amacı sanmak; "complicates/qualifies" fiillerini örnekleyen cümleye yapıştırmak.

İşlev fiilleri sözlüğü: şıktaki fiil, metinde hangi ize karşılık gelir.

Şıktaki fiilAnlamıMetinde aranacak iz
illustrates / exemplifiesGenel bir iddiayı somut örnekle gösterirÖnceki cümle genel, bu cümle "for instance", özel isim, tek vaka

summarizes / restatesÖnceki bilgiyi toplar veya başka sözcüklerle söyler"thus", "in short", "in other words", "that is"
relocates / reframesTartışmanın konusunu başka bir soruya taşır"the real question is not X but Y", "what divides them is"
replaces / inverts / overturnsEski açıklamayı atar, yenisini koyar"not X but Y", "inverts", "instead", "contrary to"
justifies / explains the shiftBir karar veya dönüşün gerekçesini verirSonraki cümlede "for this reason", "therefore"
introduces / establishesKonuyu, kişiyi veya iddiayı ilk kez verirMetnin ilk cümlesi; sonrası bunu geliştirir
emphasizes / underscoresZaten söylenmişi güçlendirirTekrar, "indeed", "in fact", üstünlük derecesi
Örnek 1.2-A (altı çizili cümlenin işlevi: taviz)
Urban beekeeping is often promoted as a way to restore pollinator populations in cities. Honeybees, it is true, are efficient pollinators of many garden plants. Yet they are a single managed species, and in dense numbers they compete with the dozens of wild bee species that cities actually risk losing. A rooftop hive, in other words, may be good for honey and bad for bees.

Which choice best describes the function of the underlined sentence in the text as a whole?

  1. A) It presents the main claim that the rest of the text goes on to support.
  2. B) It concedes a point in favor of a practice that the text then argues against.
  3. C) It introduces a distinction between two kinds of bee that the text treats as equally valuable.
  4. D) It offers evidence that urban beekeeping restores wild pollinator populations.
Analiz. "it is true" taviz işaretidir; bir sonraki cümle "Yet" ile karşı çıkar. Cümle, karşı çıkılacak görüşe hakkını verip sonra yıkmak için var. B. A: ana iddia son cümlede ("good for honey and bad for bees"), bu cümle değil. C: ayrım sonraki cümlede ve iki tür eşit tutulmaz. D: yabani tozlaştırıcılar için kanıt değil, tersine. Taktik: "it is true", "admittedly", "to be sure", "of course" + bir sonraki cümlede "yet/but/however" = concession. Şıkta "concedes/acknowledges" ara.
Örnek 1.2-B (main purpose, iki parçalı metin)
Early reviewers dismissed the novelist's habit of ending chapters mid-sentence as carelessness, a sign that she wrote too quickly to revise. Her notebooks, published decades later, tell a different story: she drafted each chapter ending several times, and the fragments grew shorter with every pass. The broken sentences were not accidents but the product of deliberate cutting, a technique for leaving the reader suspended between one scene and the next.

Which choice best states the main purpose of the text?

  1. A) To describe the publication history of a novelist's notebooks.
  2. B) To argue that early reviewers were right to criticize the novelist's unfinished sentences.
  3. C) To correct a misreading of a stylistic feature by showing that it was intentional.
  4. D) To explain why readers prefer chapters that end in complete sentences.
Analiz. Yapı: yanlış yorum (dikkatsizlik) → kanıt (defterler) → düzeltme (bilinçli teknik). Amaç yanlış okumayı düzeltmek. C. A: defterler kanıttır, konu değil (kapsam hatası, bir parça). B: yön tersi. D: metinde okur tercihi yok. Taktik: "X dismissed as Y ... tell a different story ... not Y but Z" kalıbı = düzeltme amacı. Şıkta "correct, challenge, revise a view" ara.
Örnek 1.2-C (overall structure)
Why do some languages have dozens of words for snow while others have one? The popular answer, that speakers name what matters to them, is only half right. Vocabulary does track need, but it also tracks history: a language borrows words from neighbors, inherits them from ancestors, and loses them when a way of life disappears. A rich snow vocabulary therefore tells us as much about where a people has been as about where it lives.

Which choice best describes the overall structure of the text?

  1. A) A question is posed, a common answer is judged incomplete, and a fuller answer is offered.
  2. B) A claim is made, several examples are listed, and the claim is withdrawn.
  3. C) Two languages are compared and one is shown to be more expressive.
  4. D) A historical event is described and its consequences for vocabulary are traced.
Analiz. Soru → "only half right" → "but it also" → "therefore" sonuç. A. B: iddia geri çekilmez, tamamlanır. C: iki dil karşılaştırılmaz. D: olay yok. Taktik: Yapı sorularında metnin cümle başlarındaki sinyalleri sırayla yaz: Why / The popular answer / but also / therefore. Şıkların sırası bu sinyal sırasına uymalı.
Örnek 1.2-D (sınırlı kabul cümlesinin işlevi)
Urban beekeeping is often promoted as a way to restore a city's pollinator diversity. Honeybees, it is true, pollinate many garden plants efficiently. Yet adding managed honeybee colonies does not necessarily restore the wild species whose habitats are disappearing. The author therefore argues that a successful honey harvest should not be treated as sufficient evidence of restored diversity.
Which choice best describes the function of the underlined sentence?
  1. A) It states the conclusion that the entire passage seeks to prove.
  2. B) It acknowledges a benefit of a practice whose broader justification the passage then questions.
  3. C) It establishes that honeybees and wild bees have identical habitat requirements.
  4. D) It explains why urban gardens cannot support any pollinators.
Analiz. "it is true" kabul sinyali, "Yet" itiraz sinyali. Altı çizili cümle bir faydayı kabul eder, devamı o faydanın "çeşitliliği geri getirdi" demeye yetmediğini savunur: B. A ara kabulü ana sonuç yapar; C ortak habitat iddiası uydurur; D "any" ile aşırı genelleme. Şık fiilini (acknowledges) ve fiilin nesnesini (hangi görüş?) ayrı ayrı denetle; doğru fiil yanlış görüşle birleşirse şık yine yanlıştır.

1.3 Cross-Text Connections

Soru kökleri "Based on the texts, how would the author of Text 2 most likely respond to the claim in Text 1?", "Which choice best describes the relationship between the two texts?", "Based on the texts, both authors would most likely agree with which statement?"

Ne test eder İkinci yazarın birinci yazarla ilişkisinin türünü: reddeder, sınırlar (kapsamını daraltır, koşul ekler), yeniden konumlandırır, aynı hedefi başka yoldan savunur, ya da kısmen katılır.

Yöntem

  1. Soru kökünü oku: tepki (response) mi, ilişki (relationship) mi, ortak nokta (agree) mı?
  2. Her metni on kelimeyle özetle: iddia + tavır. İddia çoğu zaman Text 1'in son cümlesindedir, ama bunu kural sayma; kanıt yetmiyorsa bütünü oku.
  3. Text 2'nin ilk cümlesindeki fiil veya bağlaca bak: "does not deny / surely / has force, yet / refines / complicates" = sınırlar; "rejects / contrary to / in fact" = reddeder; "extends / adds" = genişletir. İlişki ailesi belli olur.
  4. Doğru şıkkın fiili aynı aileden olmalı. Şıkta iki parça varsa ("accepts X but disputes Y") iki parçayı ayrı ayrı doğrula; çeldirici ilk parçada doğru, ikincide aşırıdır.

Tuzaklar Yön değişimi (Text 1'in fikrini Text 2'ye yazmak); derece ("insufficient" yerine "not at all"); metinde olmayan reçete ("should instead ..."); yalnız bir metne dayanan "agreement".

Örnek 1.3-A (tepki sorusu, sınırlama ilişkisi)
Text 1 Field studies have shown that city birds sing at higher pitches than their rural relatives. Researchers attribute the shift to traffic: low-frequency engine noise masks low notes, so birds that sing higher are heard, and heard birds attract mates. Urban song, on this account, is an adaptation to noise.
Text 2 Ornithologist Dana Kessler agrees that city songs are higher but doubts that noise is the whole story. Urban birds, she notes, are also smaller on average than rural ones, and smaller birds sing higher regardless of their surroundings. Until studies control for body size, she argues, the noise explanation remains plausible but unproven.

Based on the texts, how would Kessler (Text 2) most likely respond to the conclusion of Text 1?

  1. A) By rejecting it, since body size rather than noise fully explains the higher pitch of urban song.
  2. B) By accepting that urban songs are higher but arguing that the evidence does not yet rule out an alternative cause.
  3. C) By agreeing with it, since smaller birds are more sensitive to traffic noise.
  4. D) By proposing that rural birds should be studied in noisy environments instead.
Analiz. Text 2'nin ilk cümlesi: "agrees ... but doubts that noise is the whole story". Aile: sınırlar. Son cümle: "plausible but unproven". B. A: "fully explains" ve "rejecting" derece hatası; Kessler alternatifi ileri sürer, kanıtlamaz. C: Text 2 bunu söylemez (uydurma mekanizma). D: reçete yok. Taktik: "plausible but unproven" türü ifadeler görünce şıkta "does not rule out / insufficient evidence / further study" ara; "rejects / fully / entirely" içeren şıkları çiz.
Örnek 1.3-B (ortak nokta sorusu)
Text 1 Museums should return objects taken during colonial rule to the communities they came from. Whatever care a European institution has given a bronze or a mask, the object's meaning is bound up with the place and the practices from which it was removed, and only return can restore that meaning.
Text 2 Calls for the return of colonial-era objects raise a practical question that advocates rarely face: returned to whom? Borders have moved, communities have dispersed, and several groups may claim the same piece. These difficulties do not excuse museums from acting, but they mean that return must be negotiated case by case rather than declared as a rule.

Based on the texts, both authors would most likely agree with which statement?

  1. A) Objects removed during colonial rule should remain where they are until ownership disputes are settled.
  2. B) The meaning of a colonial-era object depends entirely on its original location.
  3. C) Museums holding colonial-era objects have some obligation to respond to requests for their return.
  4. D) Returning objects is rarely practical because communities have dispersed.
Analiz. Text 1: iade edilmeli. Text 2: zorluklar var ama "do not excuse museums from acting". Ortak zemin: müzelerin bir yükümlülüğü var. C. A: Text 1 reddeder. B: "entirely" yalnız Text 1'e yakın ve aşırı. D: Text 2 "rarely practical" demez, "case by case" der; Text 1 hiç katılmaz. Taktik: Agree sorusunda en zayıf ifadeli şık genellikle doğrudur ("some obligation", "at least"). Her iki metinde de cümleyi parmakla göster: Text 1 "should return", Text 2 "do not excuse ... from acting".
Örnek 1.3-C (genişletme ilişkisi: Text 2 karşı çıkmaz, uygular)
Text 1 Economists have long observed that people value an object more once they own it, a bias known as the endowment effect. In classic experiments, participants given a mug demanded roughly twice as much to sell it as other participants were willing to pay to buy it.
Text 2 The endowment effect was first measured with mugs and pens, but it is now clear that it applies to intangible goods as well. Subscribers to a free trial, for example, rate the service more highly at the end of the trial than non-subscribers who have merely read about it, and they resist cancelling even when they rarely use it.

Which choice best describes the relationship between the two texts?

  1. A) Text 2 challenges the existence of the effect described in Text 1 by pointing to cases in which it does not occur.
  2. B) Text 2 extends the finding described in Text 1 to a category of goods that the classic experiments did not test.
  3. C) Text 2 argues that the experiments in Text 1 were flawed because they used objects of little value.
  4. D) Text 2 offers an alternative explanation for the behavior that Text 1 attributes to the endowment effect.
Analiz. Text 2'nin ilk cümlesi: "but it is now clear that it applies to intangible goods as well". Karşı çıkış değil, genişletme. B. A ve C yön hatası (Text 2 etkiyi kabul eder). D "alternative explanation" yok; aynı etki yeni alana taşınır. Taktik: Cross-Text her zaman tartışma değildir. "as well", "also", "extends to", "the same pattern" ifadeleri genişletme ailesidir; şıkta "extends / applies / broadens" ara. "Both texts" tuzağı: doğru olmak için şıktaki her iddianın her iki metinde karşılığı olmalı; Text 2'nin örneği Text 1'e yazılamaz.
Örnek 1.3-D (gözlemi kabul edip nedeni sorgulama)
Text 1: In a fictional study, city birds sang at higher pitches than rural birds. Researchers explained the difference as an adaptation to low-frequency traffic noise.
Text 2: Ornithologist Dana Kessler accepts the pitch difference but notes that the city birds in the study were also smaller, a trait associated with higher pitch. Without controlling for body size, she argues, the noise explanation remains plausible but unproven.
How would Kessler most likely respond to the explanation in Text 1?
  1. A) By denying that any pitch difference was observed
  2. B) By claiming that body size has been proved to explain the entire difference
  3. C) By asserting that small birds cannot hear traffic noise
  4. D) By arguing that the evidence does not yet rule out an alternative explanation
Analiz. Kessler gözlemi kabul eder (accepts the pitch difference), nedeni erken bulur (plausible but unproven): D. A kabul edilen gözlemi inkâr eder; B rakip açıklamayı kesin ispata çıkarır ("proved", "entire" derece tuzağı); C yeni mekanizma uydurur. "Gözlem doğru" ile "önerilen neden doğru" kabulünü her zaman ayır.
Örnek 1.3-E (bulguyu başka alana genişletme)
Text 1: In a fictional experiment, participants who were given notebooks valued them more highly than participants who merely inspected identical notebooks. The researchers linked the difference to the experience of ownership.
Text 2: A subsequent team investigated whether a comparable effect would occur with digital goods. Participants temporarily assigned digital artwork valued it more highly than a comparison group shown the same artwork without receiving it.
Which choice best describes the relationship between the texts?
  1. A) Text 2 denies that ownership can affect valuation.
  2. B) Text 2 explains why the notebooks in Text 1 were defective.
  3. C) Text 2 reports evidence extending the pattern in Text 1 to a different category of goods.
  4. D) Text 2 argues that all digital goods are more valuable than physical goods.
Analiz. İki metin arasındaki ilişki her zaman anlaşmazlık değildir. Text 2 aynı deseni yeni kategoride bulur: C. A yönü ters çevirir; B kusur uydurur; D grup içi farkı bütün dijital-fiziksel karşılaştırmasına büyütür (kapsam). "Text 2 karşı çıkar" refleksiyle A'ya koşan öğrenci kaybeder; ilişki aileleri: sınırlar / reddeder / genişletir / nedeni sorgular.

2.1 Central Ideas and Details

Soru kökleri "Which choice best states the main idea of the text?", "According to the text, what is true about X?", "Based on the text, why did ...?" Edebi metinlerde (roman, şiir): "According to the text, what does the narrator ...?"

Yöntem

  1. İlk cümlede çürütülecek yaygın görüş var mı? ("often assumed", "popularly", "common view") Varsa ana fikir bu görüşün düzeltilmiş hâlidir.
  2. Son cümle çoğunlukla sonucu verir; ana fikir çoğunlukla "ilk karşıtlık bağlacından sonraki cümle + son cümle"dir. Ama son cümle otomatik cevap değildir; iki parçalı tezin ikinci parçası ortada kalabilir.
  3. Zor metinler iki parçalı tez kurar ("stability, yet also disguise"). Doğru şık iki parçayı da taşımalı.
  4. Detay sorusunda soru kökündeki anahtar ifadeyi metinde bul; cevap o cümlenin başka sözcüklerle yazılmış hâlidir. Yorum ekleme.

Örnek 2.1-A (ana fikir, iki parçalı tez)
The medieval guild is usually remembered as a brake on innovation: by fixing prices and limiting who could practice a trade, it protected members from competition and gave them little reason to improve. Recent studies of guild records complicate this picture. Guilds also ran the apprenticeship systems through which skills were transmitted, and in cities where guilds were strong, techniques such as clockmaking spread faster and survived longer than in cities where they were weak. The guild restrained competition, but it was also the institution that kept hard-won knowledge alive.

Which choice best states the main idea of the text?

  1. A) Medieval guilds prevented innovation by fixing prices and restricting entry to trades.
  2. B) Although guilds limited competition, they also preserved and spread technical knowledge.
  3. C) Clockmaking developed only in cities with strong guild systems.
  4. D) Recent studies have shown that guild records are more reliable than historians once thought.
Analiz. İlk cümle yaygın görüş; "complicate this picture" dönüş; son cümle iki parça: "restrained competition, but ... kept knowledge alive". B. A yaygın görüştür, ana fikir değil. C tek örnek ve "only" aşırı. D kayıtların güvenilirliği konu değil. Taktik: Son cümlede "but / yet / also" varsa iki parçayı say; tek parçalı şıkları çiz.
Örnek 2.1-B (detay sorusu)
Desert tortoises spend most of the year underground, emerging mainly after rain. A burrow protects the animal from heat, but it also serves a second purpose: the humid air inside slows the loss of water through the tortoise's skin, which matters more to its survival than avoiding high temperatures does.

According to the text, why is the burrow especially important to the desert tortoise's survival?

  1. A) It allows the tortoise to avoid predators that hunt after rain.
  2. B) It keeps the tortoise cool during the hottest hours of the day.
  3. C) Its humid air reduces the amount of water the tortoise loses.
  4. D) It stores rainwater that the tortoise drinks during dry months.
Analiz. "especially important" = metnin "matters more" dediği şey: su kaybını yavaşlatmak. Taktik: Detay sorusunda soru kökündeki vurgu sözcüğünü (especially, primarily, mainly) metindeki karşılığıyla (more than, chiefly) eşleştir.
Örnek 2.1-C (edebi metin)
The following text is from a 1912 novel. Clara has just returned to the house where she grew up.
She had expected the rooms to be smaller, as rooms are when one comes back to them; she had not expected them to be strange. The clock still stood in the hall, but it kept a time she no longer lived by, and the chair by the window, which had once been the center of every afternoon, now looked like something left behind by other people.

According to the text, what is true about Clara's reaction to the house?

  1. A) She is surprised that the house seems unfamiliar rather than merely smaller.
  2. B) She is disappointed that the furniture has been replaced since her childhood.
  3. C) She regrets having stayed away from the house for so long.
  4. D) She is comforted by how little the house has changed.
Analiz. "expected smaller ... had not expected them to be strange" = şaşkınlık, yabancılık. A. B: mobilya değişmemiş, saat ve sandalye yerinde. C: pişmanlık metinde yok. D: ters. Taktik: Edebi metinde "expected ... but" kalıbı duyguyu verir; şıklarda duygu sözcüğü (surprised, comforted, regrets) metindeki kanıtla eşleşmeli.
Örnek 2.1-D (sorudaki önem vurgusu: "especially")
In a fictional field study, a desert reptile's burrow protected it from high temperatures. The burrow's humid air also slowed water loss through its skin, an effect the researchers identified as more important to survival than cooling alone.
According to the text, why was the burrow especially important to the reptile's survival?
  1. A) It concealed the reptile from predators after rain.
  2. B) It provided stored drinking water throughout the year.
  3. C) It prevented all changes in the reptile's body temperature.
  4. D) Its humid air reduced the reptile's loss of water.
Analiz. Sorudaki "especially" metindeki "more important" ile eşleşir; öncelikli katkı su kaybının yavaşlaması: D. A ve B metinde olmayan işlevler (ek iddia); C serinletmeyi "bütün sıcaklık değişimlerini engelleme"ye büyütür (kapsam). Doğru ayrıntıyı bulmak yetmez; sorunun hangi ayrıntıyı önceliklendirdiğini (especially, primarily, mainly) gör.
Örnek 2.1-E (edebi metinde beklenti ve tepki)
In this original fictional passage, Clara returns to her childhood home. She had expected the rooms to seem smaller; she had not expected them to seem strange. The clock still stood in the hall, but it kept a time she no longer lived by. Even the familiar chair looked like something belonging to another family.
According to the text, what is true about Clara's reaction?
  1. A) She regrets that her family replaced all the furniture.
  2. B) She is reassured by the house's unchanged appearance.
  3. C) She is surprised by a sense of unfamiliarity that she had not anticipated.
  4. D) She decides that she will move back into the house.
Analiz. "had expected smaller" ile "had not expected strange" karşıtlığı şaşkınlığın kaynağıdır: C. A mobilyaların değiştiğini uydurur (sandalye "familiar"); B yabancılaşma yönüne ters; D geleceğe dair karar ekler. Edebi metinde üç soru: ne bekliyordu, neyle karşılaştı, tepkisini hangi somut ifade gösteriyor? Yorumun metindeki ifadeye dayanması gerekir; sembol aramak da düz çeviriye indirgemek de hata yaptırır.

2.2 Command of Evidence: metin

Soru kökleri "Which finding, if true, would most directly support / weaken the researchers' hypothesis?", "Which quotation from the poem most effectively illustrates the claim?", "Which statement, if true, would most strongly support the author's claim?"

  1. İddiayı ve varsa rakibini yaz. "X rather than Y", "chiefly X, not Y" kalıbı iki hipotez demektir.
  2. İdeal bulguyu kendin tasarla: bir hipotezin öngördüğü, diğerinin öngörmediği sonuç. İki hipotezin de öngördüğü bulgu ayırt etmez.
  3. Destekle sorusunda şık mekanizmayı göstermeli, yalnız sonucu değil. "X rather than Y" için Y'nin yokluğunda sonuç gerçekleşmeli.
  4. Zayıflat sorusunda önce araştırmacının neye güvendiğini tek cümleyle yaz; doğru şık o cümlenin somut karşı örneğidir, iddianın yumuşatılmış olumsuzu değil.
  5. Alıntı (quotation) sorularında önce iddiayı kendi sözcüklerinle yaz, sonra her alıntının iddianın her parçasını karşılayıp karşılamadığına bak. "anxious yet determined" için yalnız kaygı gösteren alıntı yetmez.

Tuzaklar Yönü ters (zayıflatması istenirken güçlendiren); ilişkili ama ayırt etmeyen; tek vakaya dayanan; ölçüm hatasını anlatan ama varsayımı sarsmayan; "might, could" ile yumuşatılmış mekanizmasız şık; alıntıda konuya değinen ama iddiayı kanıtlamayan dize.

Örnek 2.2-A (destekle, iki hipotez)
Biologists noticed that a species of island lizard has grown longer legs over the past thirty years. They hypothesize that the change is a response to a newly arrived predator that hunts on the ground, favoring lizards that can run faster, rather than a response to warmer temperatures over the same period.

Which finding, if true, would most directly support the biologists' hypothesis?

  1. A) Lizards on a neighboring island that has warmed equally but has no ground predator show no change in leg length.
  2. B) Lizards with longer legs are able to run faster than lizards with shorter legs.
  3. C) The predator arrived on the island at about the same time as the first warmer-than-average summers.
  4. D) Lizards on the island now spend more time in trees than they did thirty years ago.
Analiz. İki hipotez: yırtıcı | sıcaklık. İdeal bulgu: sıcaklık aynı, yırtıcı yok, bacak değişmemiş. Bu sıcaklığı dışlar, yırtıcıyı bırakır. A. B: uzun bacağın hızlı koşturduğunu söyler, nedenini ayırmaz (her iki hipotezle uyumlu). C: iki nedeni birbirinden ayırmayı imkânsızlaştırır, destek değil. D: ağaçta vakit geçirme yırtıcı hipotezine dolaylı uyar ama bacak uzunluğunun nedenini göstermez. Taktik: "rather than" varsa tahtaya iki sütun: "X'i gösteriyor mu? / Y'yi dışlıyor mu?" İkisini de dolduran şık kazanır.
Örnek 2.2-B (zayıflat, varsayımı bul)
A historian argues that a sixteenth-century merchant's letters were written by the merchant himself rather than dictated to a scribe, because the letters contain spelling errors typical of a person who learned to write late in life, and the merchant is known to have been educated only as an adult.

Which finding, if true, would most strongly weaken the historian's argument?

  1. A) The merchant's business records, kept by a professional clerk, contain no spelling errors.
  2. B) Scribes of the period commonly reproduced the spelling habits of the people who dictated to them.
  3. C) The merchant learned to read several years before he learned to write.
  4. D) Some of the letters are addressed to people the merchant never met in person.
Analiz. Varsayım: yazım hataları yazanın kendi hatalarıdır; dolayısıyla kâtip olsaydı hata olmazdı. Zayıflatan: kâtipler dikte edenin yazımını kopyalıyorduysa hatalar kâtip elinden de çıkmış olabilir. B. A: kâtiplerin hatasız yazdığını gösterir, bu tarihçiyi destekler (yön tersi). C: tarihçinin öncülüyle uyumlu, zarar vermez. D: ilgisiz. Taktik: Zayıflat sorusunda "bu bulgu doğruysa tarihçi hâlâ aynı sonucu çıkarabilir mi?" diye sor. B doğruysa çıkaramaz.
Örnek 2.2-C (alıntı seçimi, edebi)
"Night Shift" is a 1998 poem by a fictional poet, Ruth Calder. In the poem, the speaker, a nurse, presents her work as both exhausting and quietly sustaining.

Which quotation from "Night Shift" most effectively illustrates the claim?

  1. A) "The corridor is long at three o'clock, / and every door is someone else's fear."
  2. B) "My feet forget me by the fourth hour; / still, when the fever breaks, I am the one who knows it first."
  3. C) "The machines keep time more faithfully than clocks, / and no one thanks them either."
  4. D) "I have learned the names of all the silences / and which of them to trust."
Analiz. İddia iki parçalı: yorucu ve besleyici. B'nin ilk dizesi yorgunluk ("feet forget me"), ikincisi sessiz tatmin ("I am the one who knows it first"); "still" iki parçayı bağlar. Taktik: İddiadaki her sıfatı ayrı satıra yaz, her alıntıya iki tik gerektir. Tek tik alan alıntılar düşer.
Örnek 2.2-D (karşılaştırmalı deney mantığı: iki nedeni ayıran bulgu)
Biologists observed longer average legs in a fictional island lizard population after both a ground predator arrived and temperatures rose. They propose that selection associated with the predator, rather than warming alone, explains the change.
Which finding, if true, would most directly support the proposal?
  1. A) Longer-legged lizards can run faster than shorter-legged lizards.
  2. B) The predator arrived during a period of unusually warm summers.
  3. C) Comparable predator-free islands warmed equally but showed no increase in average leg length.
  4. D) Some lizards on the study island occasionally climbed trees.
Analiz. İddia "X, Y'den daha iyi açıklıyor" biçiminde; o hâlde Y sabitken X'in yokluğunda sonucun da yok olduğu karşılaştırma gerekir: ısınan ama yırtıcısız adalarda bacak değişmemiş: C. A mekanizmaya uyumlu ama iki nedeni ayırmaz; B nedenlerin birlikte değiştiğini tekrarlar (karışıklığı artırır); D ilgisiz davranış. "rather than" gördüğünde rakip açıklamayı dışlayan bulguyu ara; C bile bütün alternatifleri kesin çürütmez, destek sorusu göreli kanıt sorar.
Örnek 2.2-E (ayırt edici sanılan ipucu: zayıflatma)
A historian attributes several letters to a merchant's own hand because their unusual spellings match those in a sample known to have been written by the merchant. The historian argues that the matching spellings rule out production by a professional copyist.
Which finding, if true, would most strongly weaken the argument?
  1. A) The merchant sent letters to several different cities.
  2. B) Copyists hired by the merchant were instructed to reproduce the spelling of supplied drafts exactly.
  3. C) The merchant's handwriting changed slightly with age.
  4. D) Some surviving letters discuss prices rather than travel.
Analiz. Argüman: "aynı yazım → kopyacı olamaz". Aynı yazım kopyacının ürününde de bulunabiliyorsa ipucu ayırt edici değildir: B. A, C, D alıcı, görünüm ve içerik anlatır; hiçbiri "yazımdan kişiye" geçişi bozmaz. Zayıflatmada soru şudur: aynı iz rakip süreçte de oluşabiliyor mu? Oluşuyorsa sonuç çıkarma gücü azalır; sonuç yine de doğru olabilir, ama kanıt onu taşımaz.
Örnek 2.2-F (şiirde iki parçalı iddia)
A student interprets the speaker of the original fictional poem "Night Shift" as physically exhausted but quietly sustained by moments of helping patients.
Which quotation would most effectively support the interpretation?
  1. A) "The corridor stretched past doors whose numbers I had learned."
  2. B) "The machines counted seconds while the windows held the dark."
  3. C) "At dawn I searched the noticeboard for next week's hours."
  4. D) "My feet ached through the fourth hour; a patient's easier breathing gave me strength to stay."
Analiz. İddia iki parçalı: yorgunluk + yardımdan gelen destek. "feet ached" birincisi, "easier breathing gave me strength" ikincisi: D. A aşinalık, B zaman ve ortam, C program; şiirle ilgili ama istenen iki niteliği birlikte taşımıyor (yarım doğruluk bile değil, konu eşleşmesi). Alıntı sorusunda iddianın her parçasını alıntıda parmağınla göster.

2.3 Command of Evidence: tablo ve grafik

Soru kökleri "Which choice most effectively uses data from the table to complete the statement?", "Which choice best describes data from the graph that support the researcher's claim?", "... that weaken the claim?"

Yöntem

  1. Tabloya bakmadan iddiayı paraphrase et ve iddianın ölçütünü yakala: yüzde puanı mı, yüzde değişim mi, mutlak fark mı, sıralama mı, "üçünün toplamı" mı.
  2. Tablonun başlığını, birimlerini ve satır-sütun adlarını oku. Birim tuzakları: milyon/bin, oran/yüzde, kişi başı/toplam.
  3. Şıkları önce mantıkça ele: iddiayla ilgisi olmayan doğru cümleler gider.
  4. Kalanlar için gereken hesabı yap: fark, yüzde değişim, çarpım, toplam. Her sayıyı tabloyla tek tek doğrula; tek yanlış sayı şıkkı öldürür.

Örnek 2.3-A (tablo, yüzde değişim tuzağı)
A transport analyst claims that although the largest absolute increase in daily cycling trips between 2015 and 2023 occurred in Northfield, the fastest proportional growth took place in a smaller city.
CityDaily cycling trips, 2015Daily cycling trips, 2023
Northfield40,00058,000
Easton12,00021,000
Marlow25,00035,000
Grimsby8,00011,000

Which choice most effectively uses data from the table to support the analyst's claim?

  1. A) Northfield's trips rose by 18,000, the largest increase of the four cities.
  2. B) Easton's trips rose from 12,000 to 21,000, an increase of 75 percent, compared with 45 percent in Northfield.
  3. C) Marlow's trips rose by 10,000, a larger increase than Easton's 9,000.
  4. D) Grimsby had the fewest trips in both years, rising by only 3,000.
Analiz. Ölçüt: oransal büyüme. Hesap: Northfield 45%, Easton 75%, Marlow 40%, Grimsby 37.5%. İddia "fastest proportional growth in a smaller city": Easton. B. A doğrudur ama iddianın "although" kısmını anlatır, asıl iddiayı değil. C mutlak farkı karşılaştırır (yanlış ölçüt). D doğru ama ilgisiz. Taktik: Soru kökünde "proportional, relative, percentage growth" görürsen her satır için (yeni−eski)/eski hesapla; mutlak farka bakan şıkları çiz.
Örnek 2.3-B (grafik anlatımı, iki parçalı iddia)
A line graph shows the percentage of households in a country with a landline telephone and with a mobile phone from 2000 to 2020, in five-year steps. Landline: 94, 90, 78, 55, 32. Mobile: 35, 68, 86, 94, 97. A journalist claims that mobile phones overtook landlines between 2005 and 2010 and that the gap between them has widened in every period since.

Which choice best describes data from the graph that support the journalist's claim?

  1. A) In 2000, 94 percent of households had a landline while only 35 percent had a mobile phone.
  2. B) Mobile ownership rose from 68 percent in 2005 to 86 percent in 2010, passing landline ownership, which fell to 78 percent; by 2015 the gap was 39 points and by 2020 it was 65 points.
  3. C) Landline ownership fell in every five-year period, from 94 percent to 32 percent.
  4. D) Mobile ownership increased by 62 percentage points over the whole period, while landline ownership decreased by the same amount.
Analiz. İki parça: 2005-2010 arasında geçiş (2005: 68 < 90; 2010: 86 > 78) ve sonra genişleyen fark (2010: 8; 2015: 39; 2020: 65). B iki parçayı da gösterir. A tek yıl, geçişi göstermez. C yalnız sabit hattı anlatır. D toplam değişim, geçiş zamanı ve açılan farkı göstermez; ayrıca "same amount" doğru olsa bile iddiaya hizmet etmez. Taktik: İddiada "and" varsa iki parçayı numaralandır; şık her iki numaraya da kanıt vermeli.

Grafik okuma kontrol listesi (10 saniye).

Örnek 2.3-C ("complete the statement" biçimi: cümle çerçevesi cevabı kısıtlar)
Plant speciesSeeds per plantGermination rate (%)
Wild oat12062
Common poppy18,00014
Field bean4591
Thistle4,00038
A botanist notes that plants follow one of two strategies: producing a few seeds that are very likely to grow, or producing many seeds of which only a small share will germinate. The table supports this pattern: for example, ______

Which choice most effectively uses data from the table to complete the statement?

  1. A) field bean produces only 45 seeds per plant, but 91 percent of them germinate, whereas common poppy produces 18,000 seeds of which 14 percent germinate.
  2. B) wild oat produces 120 seeds per plant and has a germination rate of 62 percent.
  3. C) thistle produces more seeds than wild oat but fewer than common poppy.
  4. D) common poppy has the lowest germination rate of the four species at 14 percent.
Analiz. Çerçeve "two strategies ... for example" iki uç örneğin karşılaştırılmasını ister. A az tohum-yüksek çimlenme ile çok tohum-düşük çimlenmeyi yan yana koyar. B tek tür, karşılaştırma yok; C yalnız tohum sayısı, çimlenme yok; D tek tür ve tek değişken. Taktik: "complete the statement" sorularında cümlenin kendisi ne tür veri istediğini söyler: "two strategies" iki örnek, "the largest difference" bir fark, "unlike X" bir karşıtlık.
Örnek 2.3-D ("complete the statement": iki değişkenli karşıtlık)
In this fictional comparison, a researcher contrasts plants producing relatively few seeds with high germination rates and plants producing many seeds with low germination rates. The table illustrates the contrast: for example, ______
PlantSeeds per plantGermination rate
Field bean4591 percent
Wild oat12062 percent
Thistle4,00038 percent
Common poppy18,00014 percent
Which choice most effectively uses data from the table to complete the statement?
  1. A) field bean produces 45 seeds with a 91 percent germination rate, whereas common poppy produces 18,000 seeds with a 14 percent rate
  2. B) wild oat produces 120 seeds per plant
  3. C) thistle produces fewer seeds than common poppy
  4. D) common poppy has a germination rate of 14 percent
Analiz. Cümle çerçevesi "contrasts ... few seeds, high rate ... many seeds, low rate": iki bitki, iki değişken gerekir: A. B ve D tek bitkinin tek ölçütü; C yalnız tohum sayısı. Hepsi tabloda doğru, ama çerçevenin istediği karşıtlığı kurmuyor (doğru ama görev dışı). Çimlenen toplam tohum sorulsaydı sayı ile oranı çarpmak gerekirdi; burada istenmiyor, fazladan hesap yapma.
Örnek 2.3-E (grafik: kesişme zamanı ve büyüyen fark)
The graph presents fictional household phone ownership data. A journalist claims that mobile ownership overtook landline ownership between 2005 and 2010 and that the gap widened at each later observation. Household phone ownership (percent of households) 0255075100 20002005201020152020 9490785532 3568869497 LandlineMobile
Which choice best describes data supporting both parts of the claim?
  1. A) Landline ownership was 94 percent in 2000 and 32 percent in 2020.
  2. B) Mobile ownership rose by 62 percentage points over the whole period.
  3. C) Mobile ownership was below landline ownership in 2005 but above it in 2010; its lead grew from 8 points in 2010 to 39 in 2015 and 65 in 2020.
  4. D) Both forms of ownership changed by 62 percentage points between 2000 and 2020.
Analiz. İddia iki parçalı: (1) 2005-2010 arasında geçiş, (2) sonraki her gözlemde fark büyüdü. 2005: 68 < 90; 2010: 86 > 78 (fark 8); 2015: 94 - 55 = 39; 2020: 97 - 32 = 65: C. A tek seri; B yalnız toplam artış; D doğru bir sayı (94→32 ve 35→97, ikisi de 62) ama ne geçiş zamanını ne fark artışını gösterir (doğru ama ilgisiz). Grafikte çizgilerin kesiştiği kesin günü değil, verinin desteklediği aralığı kullan; farkı yüzde puan olarak hesapla.

2.4 Inferences

Soru kökleri "Which choice most logically completes the text?", "Based on the text, what can most reasonably be inferred?"

  1. Boşluktan hemen önceki bağlacı bul: therefore, thus, it follows that, this suggests that, less X than Y, not A but B. Bağlaç yönü verir.
  2. Metni "öncül 1, öncül 2, dolayısıyla ___" biçiminde yeniden kur. Sonuç öncüllerden çıkmalı.
  3. Soyut metinlerde (felsefe, kuram) ayrımı iki sütun hâlinde yaz; boşluk ayrımın doğru tarafıdır.
  4. Şıklara bakmadan boşluğu doldur; sonra dört tuzağı tara.

Tuzaklar Ters yön (sonucu neden yapan, geçmişi geleceğe çeviren); aşırı sıçrama (korelasyon kanıtı varken nedensellik); öncülün tekrarı (sonuç yerine veriyi yeniden söyleyen şık); dışarıdan bilgi (gerçek hayatta doğru, metinde yok); metinden alınmış parlak sözcüğü taşıyan şık.

Örnek 2.4-A (bilim, korelasyon sınırı)
Archaeologists excavating a coastal settlement found that layers dating to a period of known drought contain far more fish bones and far fewer bones of land animals than the layers above and below them. Written records from the same period are silent on the community's diet. Because fish bones are no more likely than other bones to survive in these soils, the shift in the bone record most plausibly reflects ______

Which choice most logically completes the text?

  1. A) a temporary change in what the community ate rather than a change in how bones were preserved.
  2. B) the community's decision to abandon farming permanently in favor of fishing.
  3. C) a decline in the fish population caused by the drought.
  4. D) the inaccuracy of the written records that describe the community's diet.
Analiz. Öncüller: kuraklık katmanında balık çok, kara hayvanı az; korunma koşulları eşit. "Because ... no more likely to survive" korunma açıklamasını eler. A. B "permanently" üst katmanla çelişir. C balık çoğalmış görünüyor, azalmamış; yön hatası. D kayıtlar sessiz, yanlış değil. Taktik: "Because X is not the case" cümlesi bir alternatif açıklamayı eler; doğru şık çoğunlukla "rather than X" kalıbıyla kalan açıklamayı adlandırır.
Örnek 2.4-B (soyut metin, ayrımın doğru tarafı)
A common defense of censorship holds that some ideas are too dangerous to circulate. The philosopher Mira Osei grants that ideas can cause harm but observes that the defense proves less than it claims: it establishes that dangerous ideas should be answered, not that they should be suppressed, since suppression removes the idea from view without removing the belief from the minds that hold it. If anything, she argues, the case for censorship is really a case for ______

Which choice most logically completes the text?

  1. A) more vigorous public argument against the ideas in question.
  2. B) stricter penalties for those who spread dangerous ideas.
  3. C) accepting that no idea is genuinely dangerous.
  4. D) removing dangerous ideas from view as quickly as possible.
Analiz. İki sütun: cevaplamak | bastırmak. Osei: savunma yalnız "cevaplanmalı"yı kanıtlar. Boşluk: cevaplama tarafı. A. B ve D bastırma tarafı (ters). C Osei'nin kabul ettiği şeyle ("ideas can cause harm") çelişir. Taktik: "establishes X, not Y" kalıbında boşluk X'in genişletilmiş hâlidir; Y'yi içeren şıkları çiz.
Örnek 2.4-C (bulguyla kayıt kapsamını ayırma)
Archaeologists found a higher proportion of fish bones and a lower proportion of land-animal bones in one settlement layer than in the layers immediately above and below it. The layers contained comparable household refuse, and the team found no difference in preservation conditions that would favor fish bones in that layer. The pattern most plausibly suggests ______
Which choice most logically completes the text?
  1. A) a temporary change in the community's diet rather than a preservation difference alone.
  2. B) the permanent abandonment of all land-based food sources.
  3. C) a demonstrated increase in the number of fish living near the settlement.
  4. D) that every written account of the community's diet is inaccurate.
Analiz. Rakip açıklama (korunma farkı) dışlanmış; atıklar karşılaştırılabilir; fark tek katmanda. Kalan makul sonuç geçici beslenme değişimi: A. B "permanent" ve "all" (kapsam); C tüketim kalıntısından balık nüfusuna sıçrar (kemik oranı nüfus sayımı değildir); D yazılı kaynak verisi yokken yanlışlık iddia eder. "Korunma koşulları aynı" bilgisi yalnız bir rakibi eler, bütün nedenlerin araştırıldığı anlamına gelmez; şıktaki "rather than ... alone" bu ölçülülüğü korur.
Örnek 2.4-D (kabul edilen öncül, reddedilen sonuç)
Philosopher Mira Osei grants that some ideas can cause harm. She argues, however, that this fact establishes a need to challenge those ideas publicly, not a need to remove them from discussion. Suppression, she observes, may hide an idea without changing the convictions of those who hold it. Her argument therefore favors ______
Which choice most logically completes the text?
  1. A) treating every idea as harmless.
  2. B) imposing penalties instead of explaining objections.
  3. C) removing disputed ideas from public view.
  4. D) responding to harmful ideas through reasoned public criticism.
Analiz. "X doğrudur (zarar olabilir) ama bundan Y (kaldırma) çıkmaz; Z (açıkça karşı çıkma) çıkar." X kabulünü ve Y-Z ayrımını ayrı tut: D. A "grants" ile verilen kabulü reddeder; B ve C yazarın eleştirdiği bastırma yönüne gider. Soyut metinde yazarın eleştirdiği iddiayı vardığı sonuç sanma; kendi görüşünü de ekleme.

Koşulun yönünü koru. "Her T örneği R sonucu verir" bilgisi, "R görülen her örnek T'dir" demek değildir. Aynı şekilde bir nedenin katkısını göstermek, onun tek veya zorunlu neden olduğunu göstermez; "associated with", "proves that" ve "is the only cause" aynı iddia değildir.

3.1 Rhetorical Synthesis (not maddeleri)

Soru kökü "While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes: [madde listesi]. The student wants to [hedef]. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?"

  1. Önce hedef cümlesini oku, anahtar sözcüklerini işaretle: "emphasize a difference", "introduce X to an audience unfamiliar with it", "explain a cause", "compare", "present a conclusion".
  2. Hedefin gerektirdiği cümle yapısını tahmin et: "difference" = iki öge ve karşıtlık; "unfamiliar audience" = kimliği tanıtan açıklama ("X, a Y that ..."); "cause" = because/since/led to; "similarity" = both/like.
  3. Notları hızlı tara, hedefle ilgili olanları işaretle. Hepsini okuma.
  4. Her şıkta hedefin her anahtar sözcüğünü ara. Hedef "unfamiliar audience" diyorsa şık X'in ne olduğunu açıklamalı; "emphasize how much" diyorsa sayı olmalı.

Tuzaklar Doğru ama hedef dışı (notlardan doğru, hedefle ilgisiz); hedefin yarısını karşılayan şık ("compare" istenirken tek öge); hedefin istemediği ayrıntıyı ekleyen uzun şık; "unfamiliar audience" hedefinde tanıtım yapmayan şık.

Hedef fiili, şıkta aranacak özellik.

HedefŞıkta olması gerekenDüşen şık

While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:
  • The Antikythera mechanism is a geared device recovered in 1901 from a shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera.
  • It dates from roughly the second century BCE.
  • Its gears modeled the motions of the sun and moon and predicted eclipses.
  • No device of comparable complexity is known from the following thousand years.
  • Modern reconstructions use X-ray imaging of the corroded fragments.
The student wants to emphasize how unusual the mechanism was for its time.

Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  1. A) Recovered in 1901 from a shipwreck, the Antikythera mechanism dates from roughly the second century BCE.
  2. B) The Antikythera mechanism's gears modeled the motions of the sun and moon, and modern reconstructions rely on X-ray imaging of its fragments.
  3. C) Built around the second century BCE, the Antikythera mechanism predicted eclipses with geared machinery unmatched in complexity for the next thousand years.
  4. D) The Antikythera mechanism is a geared device found off the Greek island of Antikythera.
Analiz. Hedef: zamanına göre ne kadar olağandışı. Gerekli: tarih + karşılaştırma (bin yıl boyunca eşi yok). C. A tarih var, karşılaştırma yok. B teknik içerik, "unusual for its time" yok. D tanıtım cümlesi, hedef başka. Taktik: Hedefteki anahtar sözcük "unusual for its time" → şıkta "for the next thousand years / unmatched / no comparable" gibi karşılaştırma ara.
Örnek 3.1-B (tanıdık olmayan okuyucu)
Notes: Wangari Maathai (1940-2011) was a Kenyan environmental activist. She founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977. The movement paid rural women to plant trees. By 2004 the movement had planted more than 30 million trees. In 2004 Maathai received the Nobel Peace Prize.
The student wants to introduce Maathai and the Green Belt Movement to an audience unfamiliar with both.

Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  1. A) In 2004, the year she received the Nobel Peace Prize, the Green Belt Movement had planted more than 30 million trees.
  2. B) Kenyan environmental activist Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, an organization that paid rural women to plant trees, in 1977.
  3. C) The Green Belt Movement, founded in 1977, had planted more than 30 million trees by 2004.
  4. D) Maathai's movement planted trees and earned her a Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
Analiz. İki şeyi tanıtmalı: Maathai kim (Kenyalı çevre aktivisti) ve hareket ne (ağaç diken kadınlara ödeme). B ikisini de tanımlar. A ve D "she / Maathai" diye tanıtmadan kullanır; C yalnız hareketi anlatır, Maathai yok. Taktik: "unfamiliar" hedefinde şıkta appositive (virgül arası tanım) ara: "X, a Y who/that ...".
Örnek 3.1-C ("zamanına göre sıra dışı" hedefi: doğru karşılaştırma ölçütü)
While researching a fictional device, a student has taken the following notes:
  • The Leran tide calculator was built in 1620.
  • It used interconnected gears to model monthly tidal cycles.
  • No other known device in the region used a comparably complex gear system until 1820.
  • Its surviving fragments were recovered from a harbor warehouse in 1998.
  • Researchers studied the fragments with modern imaging equipment.
The student wants to emphasize how unusual the device was for its time. Which choice best accomplishes this goal?
  1. A) Fragments of the Leran tide calculator were recovered from a warehouse in 1998.
  2. B) Researchers used modern imaging equipment to study the Leran tide calculator.
  3. C) Built in 1620, the Leran tide calculator used a gear system unmatched in complexity by other known regional devices for two centuries.
  4. D) The Leran tide calculator modeled monthly tidal cycles with interconnected gears.
Analiz. Hedef "unusual for its time": yapım tarihi + karşılaştırma alanı + iki yüzyıllık fark gerekir: C ("known" ve "regional" sınırlamalarını da korur).

3.2 Transitions

Soru kökü "Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?"

Yöntem

  1. Boşluktan önceki ve sonraki cümleyi oku; ilişkiyi Türkçe tek sözcükle adlandır: karşıtlık, ekleme, sonuç, örnek, sıra, vurgu, taviz, benzerlik, alternatif.
  2. Boşluğa kendi bağlacını koy, sonra şıklara bak. Şıklar genellikle dört farklı kategoriden gelir; kategori bulununca tek şık kalır.
  3. İki şık aynı kategorideyse nüansa bak (aşağıdaki tablo).
  4. Seçtiğin bağlacın noktalaması şıkta verilmişse kontrol et (bkz. However ve Noktalama).
KategoriBağlaçlarNüans
Karşıtlıkhowever, but, yet, in contrast, on the other hand, converselyin contrast / on the other hand = iki farklı şeyi yan yana koyar; however = aynı şey hakkında beklentiye ters bilgi; conversely = tersine çevrilmiş ilişki
Taviznevertheless, nonetheless, still, even so, admittedly, grantednevertheless = "buna rağmen" (önceki engel kabul edilir, sonuç yine de olur); admittedly/granted = taviz verir, ardından karşı çıkış gelir
Sonuçtherefore, thus, consequently, as a result, hence, accordinglythus = çoğu zaman özetleyici; consequently/as a result = nedensel zincir; accordingly = uygun davranış
Eklememoreover, furthermore, in addition, also, additionallymoreover = daha güçlü, aynı yönde ikinci argüman
Örnek / belirtmefor example, for instance, specifically, in particular, namelyspecifically/namely = önceki genel ifadeyi daraltır; for example = birçok olası örnekten biri
Yeniden ifade / açıklamain other words, that is, to put it differentlyönceki cümleyi daha açık söyler
Sıra / zamanfirst, next, then, finally, meanwhile, subsequently, previouslymeanwhile = aynı anda, başka yerde
Vurgu / gerçekindeed, in fact, certainlyin fact = önceki iddiayı güçlendirir ya da düzeltir ("not only ... in fact ...")
Benzerliksimilarly, likewise, by the same tokenönceki duruma paralel ikinci durum
Alternatif / koşulinstead, alternatively, otherwiseinstead = reddedilenin yerine; otherwise = aksi hâlde

Tuzaklar Karşıtlık ailesinde "however" ile "in contrast" karışması; "therefore" ile "for example" ters seçimi; "nevertheless"i basit karşıtlık için kullanmak; "in fact"i ekleme sanmak; cümleye gramer olarak uyan ama mantık ilişkisi yanlış bağlaç.

Örnek 3.2-A
For decades, geologists assumed that the valley had been carved slowly by the river that still runs through it. Sediment cores taken in 2019, ______ show that most of the valley's depth was cut in a single catastrophic flood lasting only a few days.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?

  1. A) for example,
  2. B) however,
  3. C) therefore,
  4. D) similarly,
Analiz. Önce: yavaş oyulma varsayımı. Sonra: tek bir sel. Beklentiye ters bilgi, aynı konu. B however. Noktalama: "cores taken in 2019, however, show" ara söz, iki virgül. Taktik: "assumed / believed / thought" ile başlayan ilk cümleden sonra bulgular gelirse ilişki neredeyse hep karşıtlıktır.
Örnek 3.2-B (aynı aileden iki şık)
The city's new tram line was expected to reduce car traffic in the center. ______ car traffic fell by about 12 percent in the first year, roughly the amount planners had predicted.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?

  1. A) Nevertheless,
  2. B) Indeed,
  3. C) In contrast,
  4. D) For instance,
Analiz. Beklenti vardı, beklenti gerçekleşti. İlişki: doğrulama, vurgu. B Indeed. A ve C karşıtlık ister, oysa sonuç beklentiyle uyumlu. Taktik: Önceki cümle beklenti/iddia, sonraki cümle onun gerçekleştiğini söylüyorsa "indeed / in fact"; gerçekleşmediğini söylüyorsa "however / yet".
Örnek 3.2-C (taviz ile karşıtlık farkı)
The telescope's main mirror was damaged during shipping, and two of its instruments failed within a month of launch. ______ the mission returned more usable data in its first year than its designers had hoped for in three.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?

  1. A) In other words,
  2. B) Consequently,
  3. C) Nevertheless,
  4. D) Specifically,
Analiz. Önce: ciddi engeller. Sonra: buna rağmen başarı. "Rağmen" ilişkisi = taviz. C Nevertheless. B tersine nedensellik kurar (hasar yüzünden başarı). A ve D açıklama/daraltma, ilişki değil. Taktik: "engel + yine de olumlu sonuç" = nevertheless / even so / still. "however" da kabul edilebilir olurdu ama şıkta yoksa taviz ailesini ara.
Örnek 3.2-D (örnek, daraltma ve yeniden ifade farkı)
The archive's holdings are uneven. ______ the collection contains thousands of letters from the 1880s but almost none from the decade that followed.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?

  1. A) Specifically,
  2. B) In other words,
  3. C) Consequently,
  4. D) Nevertheless,
Analiz. İlk cümle genel bir yargı ("uneven"); ikinci cümle o yargının somut içeriğini verir. Daraltma ilişkisi. A Specifically. B "in other words" aynı şeyi başka sözcüklerle söylemek içindir; burada yeni ve somut bilgi var. C nedensellik yok; D karşıtlık yok. Taktik: genel → somut = specifically / in particular; genel → birçok örnekten biri = for example; aynı fikir → yeniden ifade = in other words / that is.
Örnek 3.2-E (beklentinin doğrulanması: "expected" görünce however deme)
The city's tram line was expected to reduce car traffic in the center. ______, traffic fell by roughly 12 percent in its first year, almost exactly the reduction planners had predicted.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
  1. A) Indeed
  2. B) Nevertheless
  3. C) In contrast
  4. D) Alternatively
Analiz. Beklenti ile sonuç aynı yönde; ikinci cümle beklenen etkinin gerçekleştiğini doğrular: A. B ve C karşıtlık, D başka tercih. İlk cümlede "expected" görmek tek başına however seçtirmez; beklentinin gerçekleşip gerçekleşmediğini kontrol et. Gerçekleştiyse indeed / in fact, gerçekleşmediyse however, engele rağmen olduysa nevertheless.
Örnek 3.2-F (koşul gerçekleşmezse sonuç: otherwise)
Researchers must keep the samples below freezing during transport. ______, the material will degrade before testing begins.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
  1. A) Similarly
  2. B) For instance
  3. C) Moreover
  4. D) Otherwise
Analiz. Anlam "bu koşul sağlanmazsa": bozulma, talimata uyulmamasının sonucudur: D. A benzerlik, B örnek, C aynı yönde ek bilgi gerektirir. Öğrenci ikinci cümleyi "soğukta tutmanın sonucu" diye okursa yönü ters çevirir. Otherwise için "if not" karşılığıyla yeniden oku.

4.1 Boundaries (cümle sınırları ve noktalama)

Soru kökü "Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?" Şıklar yalnız noktalama ve bağlaçta farklılaşır.

Temel test: bağımsız cümle Bir parça tek başına cümle olabiliyor mu? Özne + çekimli fiil + tam düşünce. "Having studied the data" bağımsız değil (fiil çekimsiz). "Although the data were clear" bağımsız değil (although bağımlı yapar). "The data were clear" bağımsız.

Örnek 4.1-A (iki nokta ve noktalı virgül)
The expedition carried three kinds of instrument ______ barometers for altitude, chronometers for longitude, and thermometers sealed in brass cases.
  1. A) instrument:
  2. B) instrument;
  3. C) instrument,
  4. D) instrument
Analiz. Sol parça tam cümle ("The expedition carried three kinds of instrument"); sağ parça liste, bağımsız cümle değil. İki nokta listeyi açar. A. B noktalı virgül iki bağımsız cümle ister, sağ taraf değil.
The lighthouse keeper's log, ______ records the wreck in a single line.
  1. A) a water-stained notebook now held by the county archive,
  2. B) a water-stained notebook now held by the county archive
  3. C) a water-stained notebook, now held by the county archive
  4. D) a water-stained notebook; now held by the county archive,
Analiz. "log" sonrasında virgül açılmış; ara söz "a water-stained notebook now held by the county archive" bittiğinde kapanmalı; sonra özne "log" fiiline ("records") ulaşır. A. B ara sözü kapatmaz, özne-fiil arası açık kalır. C virgülü yanlış yere koyar. D noktalı virgül ara sözü böler. Taktik: Açan virgülü gör, kapatanı ara; ara sözü silip cümleyi oku: "The lighthouse keeper's log records the wreck". Çalışıyorsa çift doğrudur.
Örnek 4.1-C (noktalı virgüllü liste)
The jury included a retired judge from Lyon, France; a novelist who had never served before; ______ and a schoolteacher who later wrote a book about the trial.
  1. A) an engineer, Petra Novak, who asked most of the questions;
  2. B) an engineer, Petra Novak, who asked most of the questions,
  3. C) an engineer Petra Novak who asked most of the questions;
  4. D) an engineer; Petra Novak; who asked most of the questions;
Analiz. Liste ögeleri noktalı virgülle ayrılmış (öğeler içinde virgül var). Üçüncü öge de noktalı virgülle bitmeli ve kendi içindeki appositive ("Petra Novak") virgüllerle çevrilmeli. A. B öge sonunda virgül, tutarsız. C appositive virgülleri eksik. D ögeyi parçalar. Taktik: Listenin başka bir yerinde noktalı virgül görürsen boşluktaki ayırıcı da noktalı virgüldür; öge içindeki virgüller serbesttir.
Örnek 4.1-D (gereksiz virgül, zorunlu "that")
The theory ______ was abandoned within a decade of its publication.
  1. A) that the astronomer proposed in 1846,
  2. B) that the astronomer proposed in 1846
  3. C) , that the astronomer proposed in 1846,
  4. D) , that the astronomer proposed in 1846
Analiz. "that ..." zorunlu ilgi cümleciği, virgül almaz; özne "The theory that ... 1846" ile fiil "was abandoned" arasına virgül konmaz. B. A özne-fiil arasına tek virgül. C ve D "that" önüne virgül. Taktik: "that" gördüğün yerde virgül yok. Virgüllü ek bilgi "which" ile gelir.

Only one of the original instruments survived the fire ______ a cracked barometer that still hangs in the society's library.
  1. A) fire, which was
  2. B) fire:
  3. C) fire, and that was
  4. D) fire, this was
Analiz. Sol parça tam cümle; sağ parça "a cracked barometer ..." açıklayıcı isim öbeği (hangi alet?). İki nokta, tam cümleden sonra açıklama ekler. B (tek tire de aynı işi görürdü). A "which was a cracked barometer": "which" en yakın isme, yani "fire"a gönderir; yangın barometre değildi, anlam bozulur. C gereksiz ve belirsiz ("that" neye gönderiyor?). D comma splice.
The lighthouse keeper's log, ______ records the storm in a single sentence.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
  1. A) a water-stained notebook now held by the county archive
  2. B) a water-stained notebook now held by the county archive,
  3. C) a water-stained notebook; now held by the county archive,
  4. D) a water-stained notebook now held by the county archive;
Analiz. "log"dan sonra açılan ek açıklama (appositive) ana fiil "records"tan önce kapanmalı. Çıkarınca "The lighthouse keeper's log records the storm" kalmalı: B. A açılan virgül çiftini kapatmaz (özne ile fiil arasında tek virgül kalır); C isim grubunu noktalı virgülle böler; D özne ile ana fiil arasına cümle sınırı koyar. Ara söz testinde hem çıkarılan parçayı hem kalan iskeleti kontrol et.
Örnek 4.1-G (gerekli ilgi cümleciği: virgülsüz that)
Of the several theories discussed in the chapter, the theory ______ was later abandoned.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
  1. A) that the astronomer proposed in 1846
  2. B) that the astronomer proposed in 1846,
  3. C) , that the astronomer proposed in 1846,
  4. D) , that the astronomer proposed in 1846
Analiz. Birden çok teori arasından hangisi kastediliyor? "that ... 1846" kimliği belirleyen (gerekli) bilgidir, virgülle ayrılmaz; özne grubu ile "was abandoned" arasına da tek virgül gelmez: A. B özne-fiil arasına virgül; C ve D tanımlayıcı that'i ek bilgi gibi ayırır. Cümlenin başındaki virgül ise edat grubunu kapatıyor; bütün virgüllerin görevi aynı değildir. "that görünce yakınında virgül olamaz" kuralı da fazla geniştir: "The curator stated, however, that the dates were uncertain" cümlesinde virgüller however ara sözünü kapatır.
Örnek 4.1-H (tek uzun tireyle açıklama)
Only one of the original instruments survived the fire______ a cracked barometer now displayed in the entrance hall.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
  1. A) ;
  2. B) .
  3. C) —
  4. D) , and
Analiz.

4.2 HOWEVER ve bağlaç-zarflar

Bu konu kendi sayfasında. "however" ve arkadaşları (therefore, moreover, nevertheless, instead, in fact ...) SAT'in en sık noktalama tuzağıdır; üç sözcük sınıfı, however için yedi kalıp, dört ölümcül hata, 15 saniyelik karar ağacı, "; however," ile ", however;" arasında anlamla karar, 12 soruluk temel set ve 24 soruluk ileri set için However ve Noktalama rehberine geç.

4.3 Form, Structure, and Sense

Ne test eder Özne-fiil uyumu, zamir-öncül uyumu, fiil zamanı, değiştirici yerleşimi, paralellik, iyelik ve çoğul, karşılaştırma yapıları.

KonuKontrolTuzak
Özne-fiil uyumuAraya girenleri (of-öbekleri, which/that cümlecikleri, tireli açıklamalar) parantezle; özneyi bul; sayıya bakFiile en yakın isim özne sanılır: "The collection of letters (that the archive holds) is"; "There are several reasons"; "each / every / neither" tekil; "a number of" çoğul, "the number of" tekil
ZamirÖncülü bul; sayı ve açıklık"they/this/it" belirsiz gönderim; "a given term ... it" (tekil); its/it's, their/they're/there, whose/who's
Fiil zamanıÇevredeki fiillerin zamanına uy; tarih varsa geçmiş; genel gerçek şimdiki"has helped" ile "helped" karışması; "would have" gereksiz koşul
Değiştirici (modifier)Virgülle açılan giriş öbeğinden sonra gelen özne, öbeğin öznesi olmalı"Having finished the survey, the results were published" yanlış; sonuçlar anketi bitirmedi
ParalellikListede ve karşılaştırmada aynı yapı"to read, writing, and that she spoke" karışık; "not only X but also Y" aynı tür
İyelik ve çoğulSahiplik var mı? Tekil mi çoğul mu?"the scientists' findings" (çoğul iyelik) / "the scientist's" (tekil) / "the scientists" (çoğul, iyelik yok)
KarşılaştırmaKarşılaştırılanlar aynı türde olmalı"The wingspan of the eagle is larger than the hawk" yanlış; "than that of the hawk"
Örnek 4.3-A (özne-fiil, araya giren)
The series of experiments that the laboratory conducted between 1998 and 2004, together with the follow-up studies, ______ the basis of the current model.
  1. A) form
  2. B) forms
  3. C) have formed
  4. D) are forming
Analiz. Özne "The series" (tekil); "of experiments", "that ... 2004", "together with ..." hepsi araya giren. "together with" özneyi çoğullaştırmaz. B forms. Taktik: Cümleyi özne + fiile indir: "The series ... forms the basis."
Örnek 4.3-B (dangling modifier)
Trained as a chemist rather than as a painter, ______
  1. A) the restorer's methods relied on laboratory analysis.
  2. B) laboratory analysis was central to the restorer's methods.
  3. C) the restorer relied on laboratory analysis.
  4. D) the methods of the restorer were based on laboratory analysis.
Analiz. Giriş öbeğinin öznesi kimyager olarak eğitilen kişi: restoratör. Virgülden sonra o gelmeli. C. A, B, D'de özne "methods / analysis"; onlar eğitilmedi. Taktik: Giriş öbeği "-ed / -ing / sıfat" ile başlıyorsa virgülden sonraki ilk isme "bunu kim yaptı" diye sor.
Örnek 4.3-C (zamir açıklığı ve iyelik)
When the two companies merged, ______ combined research budget exceeded that of any competitor.
  1. A) its
  2. B) their
  3. C) it's
  4. D) they're
Analiz. Öncül "the two companies" çoğul; iyelik gerekli. B their. A tekil; C ve D kısaltma. Taktik: İyelik mi kısaltma mı: "it is / they are" diye açıp oku; cümle bozuluyorsa iyelik biçimi gerekir.
Örnek 4.3-D (paralellik)
The program teaches participants to read financial statements, to negotiate contracts, and ______
  1. A) how a budget should be managed.
  2. B) to manage a budget.
  3. C) budget management.
  4. D) managing a budget.
Analiz. İlk iki öge "to + fiil"; üçüncü de öyle olmalı. B. Taktik: Listenin ilk ögesinin yapısını yaz (to V); boşluğa aynı yapıyı iste.
Örnek 4.3-E (fiil zamanı ve uyum birlikte)
Since 2015, the number of volunteers who ______ the annual river survey has more than doubled.
  1. A) join
  2. B) joins
  3. C) had joined
  4. D) will join
Analiz. Boşluktaki fiilin öznesi "volunteers" (who cümleciği içinde, çoğul); ana fiil "has more than doubled" şimdiki zamanla bağlantılı ("Since 2015"). Genel ve süregelen katılım: geniş zaman çoğul. A join. B tekil; C past perfect için bağlam yok; D gelecek, "since" ile çelişir. Not: "the number of ... has" tekil (ana fiil), ama "volunteers who join" çoğul (ilgi cümleciği). İki uyum aynı cümlede test edilir. Taktik: "who/that" cümleciğinde fiilin öznesi hemen önündeki isimdir; ana cümlenin öznesi ayrıca bulunur.

Uyum kısa kartı. Tekil: each, every, either, neither, anyone, everyone, nobody, "the number of", akademik alan adları (economics), "a series / a collection / a pair of". Çoğul: both, few, many, several, "a number of", "a variety of" (çoğul isimle). "None / some / most / all of + isim": ismin sayısına göre. "As well as / along with / together with / in addition to" özneyi çoğullaştırmaz. Ters sıralı cümlede ("There are / Among the findings is") özne fiilden sonradır; önce özneyi bul.

Zaman kısa kartı. Tarih veya "in 1998" = simple past. "Since / for + süre" = present perfect.

At present, the number of volunteers who regularly ______ river samples is greater than it was a decade ago.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
  1. A) collect
  2. B) collects
  3. C) is collecting
  4. D) has collected
Analiz. Boşluk "who" cümleciğinin içinde; who'nun öznesi "volunteers" (çoğul): A. Sonraki "is" ise ana cümlenin tekil öznesi "the number" ile uyuşur; aynı cümlede iki ayrı uyum var. B, C, D tekil biçimler: "number tekil" diye boşluğu da tekil yapan öğrenci ana cümlenin öznesini yanlış fiile bağlar. Önce boşluğun hangi cümlecikte olduğunu belirle; her çekimli fiil kendi öznesini bulur.
Üç küçük tuzak: karşılaştırma, apostrof, zamir
TuzakKuralÖrnek
Mantıklı karşılaştırmaAynı tür şeyleri karşılaştır; tekil özellik için that of, çoğul için those of"The average depth of Lake Merin is greater than that of Lake Sora." ("than Lake Sora" derinliği gölle karşılaştırır)
Sahiplik ve çoğulÖnce kaç sahip var, sonra sahiplik var mı: artist's / artists' / children's; yalnız çoğul yapmak için apostrof yok"the three artists' sketches" (üç sanatçı, çizimler onların); "its collection" sahiplik, "it's" = it is

Karma K3ÇıkarımKoşulun yönünü çevirdim"also resisted ... because of""T ise R" ile "R ise T" ayrımı

"all" yerine "some" mı gerekir, "rejects" yerine "qualifies" mı, virgül yerine noktalı virgül mü?

However'ın son aşaması aktarımdır. Yalnız however örneklerini doğru yapmak, aynı sınırı therefore veya for example ile de görebildiğini garanti etmez; aktarım setini kullan. Yanlış bir cümleyi iki farklı doğru biçimde yeniden yazdır ve hangi virgülün ara sözü, hangisinin participle grubunu ayırdığını açıklat.

  1. Soru kökü önce. Tipi tanı, metni ona göre oku.
  2. Bağlaçları işaretle. however, yet, rather than, not X but Y, therefore, for example.
  3. Şıklara bakmadan tahmin et. Türkçe ve kaba olabilir.
  4. Her şık için parmakla gösterilecek bir cümle. Gösteremiyorsan "olabilir" = yanlış.
  5. İki şık kaldı: tek farkı bul; eksen kapsam / yön / derece / özne / fiil ailesi.
TipTek cümlelik kural
Words in ContextTanım cümlesini bul; "anything but / far from" varsa tersini ara; iki yakın sözcükte "neye karşı" sor.
Text StructureÖnce şıkların fiilini oku; metindeki yön sözcüğüyle aynı aileden olmalı.
Cross-Textİki iddiayı ayrı yaz; Text 2'nin tutum fiili ilişkiyi adlandırır (sınırlar / reddeder / genişletir); kabul edilen gözlem ile tartışılan nedeni ayır; "overturns, entirely" derece tuzağı.
Central IdeasYaygın görüş değil, düzeltilmiş hâli; iki parçalı tezin iki parçası da şıkta olmalı.
Evidence (metin)İki hipotez yaz; yalnız birinin öngördüğü bulgu kazanır; "rather than" için Y dışlanmalı.
Evidence (veri)Önce iddianın ölçütü (yüzde / puan / fark / toplam), sonra her sayıyı tabloyla doğrula.
InferencesÖncül 1 + öncül 2 → sonuç; öncülü tekrar eden ve sıçrayan şık düşer.
SynthesisHedefin anahtar sözcüğü şıkta birebir karşılanmalı; notlardan doğru ama hedef dışı şık düşer.
Transitionsİlişkiyi Türkçe adlandır; beklenti gerçekleştiyse "indeed", gerçekleşmediyse "however", engele rağmen olduysa "nevertheless".
Boundariesİki yan bağımsız mı? Evetse nokta / noktalı virgül / virgül+FANBOYS; yalnız virgül asla. İlerde "; and" varsa liste noktalı virgüllü.
HOWEVERSağ bağımsız ve sol bağımsız → "; however," veya ". However,". Sağ bağımsız değil → ", however," ara söz. "However hard" → virgülsüz. ", however," ile iki cümle bağlanmaz.
Form, Structure, SenseAraya girenleri parantezle, özneyi bul; "who/that" fiilinin öznesi hemen önündeki isim; giriş öbeğinden sonra onu yapan kişi gelir.

bolster, reinforceDesteği güçlendirmekbolster an argument
corroborate, substantiateDoğrulayıcı kanıt sağlamakcorroborate an account
underscore, emphasizeÖnemini vurgulamakunderscore a limitation
undermine, cast doubt onDayanağını veya güveni zayıflatmakundermine an explanation
contradict, refuteÇelişmek veya yanlışlığını göstermeye yönelmekevidence contradicts a prediction
qualify, temperKapsamı, kesinliği veya şiddeti sınırlamakqualify a broad claim
concede, acknowledgeBir noktayı kabul etmekacknowledge a benefit
dismiss, discount, downplayReddetmek, az önem vermek, etkisini küçültmekdiscount an alternative cause

contingent on ve concurrent withBir koşula bağlı ve eşzamanlıcontingent on funding; concurrent with repairs

Sonraki derste kelimeyi farklı nesneyle kullan: "qualify a claim" ile "qualify for a competition" aynı anlam değildir.
