Turkish explanation, English question, and model essay. Length target 270-300 words, exactly 4 paragraphs.
Two-part (direct question) essay, asks two separate questions on a single topic and requires you to answer both. In this guide, you will see step by step how to divide the two questions into 4 paragraphs, which template language to use, and how to construct a Band 8+ model; for a complete example, check the full model essay page.
Örneğin: "Nowadays many people choose to live alone. Why is this happening? Is it a positive or negative development?" Burada birinci soru sebep, ikinci soru senin görüşünü ister. Başka varyasyonlar da vardır: "What are the causes? What can be done?" ya da "Why...? What effect does it have on...?"
Diğer tiplerle karışmasın: Opinion sorusu ("To what extent do you agree?") tek tez tartıştırır; discussion sorusu ("Discuss both views and give your opinion") iki karşıt görüşü ele aldırır.
Two-part question (sometimes referred to as direct question or double question) is a type of question in IELTS Writing Task 2 that poses two different questions on the same topic. This differs from opinion (agree/disagree) or discussion (both views) types: here, a single thesis is not debated; you are expected to provide separate answers to the two questions that have been explicitly asked.
The most common pattern is as follows: a "Why?" question plus an evaluation question. For example: "Nowadays many people choose to live alone. Why is this happening? Is it a positive or negative development?" Here, the first question asks for a reason, and the second question asks for your opinion. There are other variations as well: "What are the causes? What can be done?" or "Why...? What effect does it have on...?"
The structure is always 4 paragraphs and the logic is very clear:
Do not confuse with other types: An Opinion question ("To what extent do you agree?") debates a single thesis; a discussion question ("Discuss both views and give your opinion") addresses two opposing views. A two-part question contains two separate questions on the same topic, so the bodies are constructed based on the logic of "separate questions" rather than "opposing sides." Recognizing this subtle difference is the first step in choosing the correct structure.

Mini örnek ayrıştırma: "Many young people today spend a lot of time on social media. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative trend?" Bunu ikiye böl: Soru A = Gençler neden sosyal medyada çok vakit geçiriyor? Bu iki satırlık plan, tüm essay'in iskeletidir.
The biggest score loss in a two-part essay comes from forgetting the second question and focusing only on one. The safest way to prevent this is to physically separate the question into two parts before you start writing.
Mini example breakdown: "Many young people today spend a lot of time on social media. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative trend?" Break this into two: Question A = Why do young people spend so much time on social media? (Body 1: accessibility + peer influence + entertainment, example: a student’s constant notification flow). Question B = Is this positive or negative? (Body 2: clear position — largely negative; reason distraction and sleep issues; mention connection benefits as a concession). This two-line plan is the skeleton of the entire essay.
Time plan: Spend the first 5 minutes of the 40 minutes on this breakdown. When you correctly divide the two questions, the remaining writing flows almost naturally. Distribute the remaining time as approximately 5 minutes for the introduction, 12 minutes for each body, 3 minutes for the conclusion, and 3 minutes for review.
Her soru tipi kendi kalıp dilini ister. Aşağıdaki ifadeler, hangi soruya cevap verdiğini examiner'a sinyal eder; bu da Coherence & Cohesion puanını yükseltir. Ezberden serpiştirme; her birini doğru paragrafta kullan.
| İşlev | Kalıp (English) | Nerede |
|---|---|---|
| Sebep sıralama | There are several reasons why... / This is primarily because... / A key factor behind this is... | Body 1 (Neden?) |
| Sebep zinciri | As a result... / Consequently... / This, in turn, leads to... | Body 1 sonuç cümlesi |
| Görüş bildirme | In my opinion, this is a positive/negative development. / I firmly believe that... | Body 2 ilk cümle |
| Örnek verme | For instance,... / A clear example of this is... / Take..., for example. | Her iki body |
| Concession (ödün) | Although... can carry certain drawbacks... / While it is true that... | Body 2 karşı görüş |
| Sonuca bağlama | Therefore, the benefits clearly outweigh... / For these reasons, I regard this as...
Each question type requires its own template language. The expressions below signal to the examiner which question you are answering; this also raises your Coherence & Cohesion score. Do not sprinkle them from memory; use each in the correct paragraph.
| Function | Template (English) | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Reason listing | There are several reasons why... / This is primarily because... / A key factor behind this is... | Body 1 (Why?) |
| Reason chain | As a result... / Consequently... / This, in turn, leads to... | Body 1 conclusion sentence |
| Opinion stating | In my opinion, this is a positive/negative development. / I firmly believe that... | Body 2 first sentence |
| Example giving | For instance,... / A clear example of this is... / Take..., for example. | Both bodies |
| Concession | Although... can carry certain drawbacks... / While it is true that... | Body 2 opposing view |
| Conclusion tying | Therefore, the benefits clearly outweigh... / For these reasons, I regard this as... | Body 2 conclusion / Conclusion |
In evaluative language, moderation is important: "largely positive", "on balance", "clearly outweigh" give both a clear position and a mature tone; this is a hallmark of Band 7-8 writing.
Model cevap (287 kelime, 4 paragraf, iki soru da cevaplı):
[Introduction] It is increasingly common for adults in numerous nations to postpone parenthood until their thirties or even forties. This essay will examine the reasons behind this trend before arguing that, on balance, it is a positive development.
[Body 1 — Neden?] There are several reasons why couples are choosing to delay having children. This is primarily because young people today prioritise education and career advancement, both of which demand years of sustained commitment. A recent graduate, for instance, may spend her twenties completing a master's degree and establishing herself professionally, leaving little time or money for a family until she is well into her thirties. In addition, the soaring cost of housing means that many couples feel financially unprepared to raise a child, and they prefer to wait until they own a home. Consequently, parenthood is naturally pushed to a later stage of life.
[Body 2 — Pozitif mi Negatif mi?] In my opinion, this is largely a positive development. Older parents tend to be more emotionally mature and financially secure, which allows them to provide a stable and nurturing environment for their offspring. Moreover, mature parents are often better equipped to guide their children through life's challenges. Someone who has already built a solid career, for example, can afford quality childcare and dedicate greater attention to a child's upbringing without the constant stress of financial hardship. Although later pregnancies can carry certain health risks, advances in modern medicine have significantly reduced these concerns. Therefore, the benefits of postponing parenthood clearly outweigh the drawbacks.
[Conclusion] In conclusion, the tendency to have children later stems mainly from the pursuit of education and financial security, and I firmly believe this shift benefits both parents and children by ensuring a more stable upbringing.
Introduction: Konu paraphrase edildi ("postpone parenthood... thirties or even forties") ve son cümlede iki soru da haber verildi: sebepler incelenecek ("examine the reasons") ve pozisyon açıklandı ("arguing that... it is a positive development").
Body 1 (birinci soru — Neden?): İDDİA "several reasons" ile açıldı; GEREKÇE eğitim ve kariyer önceliği ("prioritise education and career advancement"); ÖRNEK yüksek lisans yapan bir mezun ("a recent graduate... completing a master's degree"); ikinci gerekçe olarak konut maliyeti eklendi ("In addition, the soaring cost of housing"); SONUÇ "Consequently, parenthood is... pushed to a later stage". Bu gövde tamamen neden sorusuna odaklandı, değerlendirmeye hiç girmedi.
Body 2 (ikinci soru — Pozitif mi Negatif mi?): POZİSYON ilk cümlede net ("In my opinion, this is largely a positive development"); GEREKÇE olgun ve maddi olarak güvende ebeveyn ("more emotionally mature and financially secure"); ÖRNEK kariyer sahibi birinin kaliteli bakım sağlaması; CONCESSION olarak sağlık riski bir cümlede kabul edildi ama modern tıpla dengelendi ("Although later pregnancies can carry certain health risks... modern medicine"); SONUÇ "Therefore, the benefits... clearly outweigh the drawbacks". Karşı görüş tek cümlede kalıp net tarafla bitirildi.
Conclusion: Tek cümlede iki sorunun cevabı birleştirildi: sebep ("pursuit of education and financial security") ve yargı ("this shift benefits both parents and children"). Yeni bilgi eklenmedi; YARGI tekrarlandı.

[Conclusion] In conclusion, the tendency to have children later stems mainly from the pursuit of education and financial security, and I firmly believe this shift benefits both parents and children by ensuring a more stable upbringing.
Introduction: The topic was paraphrased ("postpone parenthood... thirties or even forties") and in the last sentence, both questions were indicated: the reasons will be examined ("examine the reasons") and the position will be stated ("arguing that... it is a positive development"). Thus, the examiner understands from the beginning that they will see both questions.
Body 1 (first question — Why?): The CLAIM opened with "several reasons"; the REASON is the priority of education and career ("prioritize education and career advancement"); EXAMPLE of a graduate student ("a recent graduate... completing a master's degree"); a second reason was added regarding housing costs ("In addition, the soaring cost of housing"); the CONCLUSION is "Consequently, parenthood is... pushed to a later stage". This body focused entirely on the why question, without entering the evaluation.
Body 2 (second question — Positive or Negative?): The POSITION is clear in the first sentence ("In my opinion, this is largely a positive development"); the REASON is mature and financially secure parents ("more emotionally mature and financially secure"); EXAMPLE of someone with a solid career providing quality care; a CONCESSION was accepted in one sentence regarding health risks but balanced with modern medicine ("Although later pregnancies can carry certain health risks... modern medicine"); the CONCLUSION is "Therefore, the benefits... clearly outweigh the drawbacks". The opposing view was kept to a single sentence and concluded with a clear position.
Conclusion: The answers to both questions were combined in a single sentence: the reason ("pursuit of education and financial security") and the judgment ("this shift benefits both parents and children"). No new information was added; the JUDGMENT was reiterated.
1. Sadece bir soruyu cevaplamak. En ölümcül hata. "Why?" sorusuna sayfalar dolusu yazıp "positive or negative?" kısmını atlarsan, Task Response otomatik olarak Band 5'e düşer. Yazmadan önce iki soruyu da işaretle.
2. Pozisyon vermemek. Değerlendirme sorusunda "it can be both good and bad" deyip karar vermemek. Bu, soruyu direct cevaplamamaktır. Bir tarafa net ağırlık ver.
3. Örneksiz body. "Older parents are more mature" deyip geçmek soyut kalır. Her gövdeye somut bir örnek ("a recent graduate...", "someone with a solid career...") koy; örnek iddiayı Band 6'dan Band 7-8'e taşır.
4. Beş paragraf yazmak. İkinci soru için iki ayrı gövde açmak veya karşı görüşe müstakil paragraf ayırmak yapıyı bozar. Karşı görüş, Body 2 içinde tek cümlelik concession olarak kalır. Yapı: 1 giriş + 2 gövde + 1 sonuç.
5. İki soruyu karıştırmak. Body 1'de sebep anlatırken "and this is good because..." diye değerlendirmeye kaymak. Sebep gövdesi tarafsız kalır; yargı Body 2'ye aittir.
6. Soruyu kelimesi kelimesine kopyalamak. Introduction'da soru cümlesini aynen yazmak Lexical puanını düşürür; mutlaka paraphrase et.
1. Answering only one question. The deadliest mistake. If you write pages on the "Why?" question and skip the "positive or negative?" part, your Task Response will automatically drop to Band 5. Mark both questions before writing.
2. Not providing a position. Saying "it can be both good and bad" in the evaluation question and not making a decision. This does not directly answer the question. Clearly lean towards one side.
3. Body without examples. Saying "Older parents are more mature" remains abstract. Include a concrete example ("a recent graduate...", "someone with a solid career...") in each body; examples elevate the claim from Band 6 to Band 7-8.
4. Writing five paragraphs. Opening two separate bodies for the second question or dedicating a separate paragraph to the opposing view disrupts the structure. The opposing view should remain a single-sentence concession within Body 2. Structure: 1 introduction + 2 bodies + 1 conclusion.
5. Mixing the two questions. While explaining the reason in Body 1, slipping into evaluation with "and this is good because...". The reason body should remain neutral; the judgment belongs to Body 2.
6. Copying the question verbatim. Writing the question sentence exactly in the introduction lowers the Lexical score; always paraphrase.
