This guide is entirely explained in Turkish; English model answers and diagrams are marked separately. The process diagram is the question that requires the most templates in Task 1.
The process diagram shows step by step how something is done or how a cycle works. In this article, you will learn the 4-paragraph structure, passive voice, and sequencing conjunctions with a Band 8+ model. For visual complete examples, check the visual complete model page.
Task 1'in evrensel yapısı burada da geçerlidir: 4 paragraf, 170-200 kelime, sıfır yorum.
Process diagram is a Task 1 question that shows step by step how a product is produced or how a natural event occurs. The only major difference from other Task 1 types (graph, table, map) is that here there are no numbers or data. Your job is not to compare figures, but to describe the order of the stages in a correct and fluent manner.
Processes can appear in two ways:
The universal structure of Task 1 applies here as well: 4 paragraphs, 170-200 words, zero comments.
Golden rule: Never describe the stages one by one in the Overview; only answer the question “how many steps does this process have and what does it generally look like.” The details of the stages belong to the Detail paragraphs.

Edilgen yapının temel formülü: be (is/are) + fiilin 3. hali (V3).
| Etken (aktif) — yazma | Edilgen (passive) — yaz |
|---|---|
| They heat the clay. | The clay is heated. |
| Workers collect the water. | The water is collected. |
| A machine passes the mixture through a grid. | The mixture is passed through a grid. |
| They add sand and water. | Sand and water are added. |
| The factory packages the bricks. | The bricks are packaged. |
Zaman genellikle Present Simple Passive'dir (is/are + V3), çünkü süreç her seferinde aynı şekilde tekrar eder. Sadece geçmişte olmuş belirli bir olay anlatılıyorsa (nadiren) Past Passive kullanılır.
İpucu: “be + V3” kalıbını otomatikleştir. Her aşamayı yazarken önce “ne oluyor?” diye sor, sonra o fiili edilgene çevir: dig → is dug, cut → is cut, leave → is left, grind → is ground.
The heart of the process diagram is passive voice. Why? Because what matters in the process is not who performs the action, but what happens to the material. Instead of saying “Workers dig the clay,” it is more academic and suitable for the nature of the process to say “The clay is dug.” The subject (worker, machine) is often not mentioned at all.
The basic formula of the passive structure is: be (is/are) + the 3rd form of the verb (V3).
| Active — write | Passive — write |
The tense is usually Present Simple Passive (is/are + V3), because the process repeats in the same way each time. Only when describing a specific event that occurred in the past (rarely) is Past Passive used.
Tip: Automate the “be + V3” pattern. When writing each stage, first ask “what is happening?” and then convert that verb to passive: dig → is dug, cut → is cut, leave → is left, grind → is ground.
Aşamaların birbirine bağlanmasını sağlayan sözcükler, sürecin “akıcı” okunmasını sağlar ve Coherence & Cohesion puanını doğrudan yükseltir. Amaç, aynı bağlacı (özellikle “then”) tekrar tekrar kullanmak yerine çeşitlendirmektir.
| İşlev | Bağlaç / ifade |
|---|---|
| Başlangıç | First, / To begin with, / At the first stage, |
| Sonraki adım | Next, / Then, / After that, / Following this, |
| Bir üst düzey geçiş | Subsequently, / At the following stage, |
| Eşzamanlılık / koşul | Once ..., / When ..., / As soon as ... |
| Sebep-sonuç | As a result, / so that, / in order to |
| Son aşama | Finally, / Lastly, / In the final stage, |
Döngüsel süreçlerde bitişi başa bağlamak için özel bir ifade gerekir: “... at which point the cycle begins again / the process is repeated.”
İpucu: “Once” ve “When” bağlaçları çok işe yarar çünkü iki aşamayı zarif biçimde birleştirir: “Once the bricks have dried, they are fired in a kiln.”
Words that connect the stages ensure that the process is read “smoothly” and directly increase the Coherence & Cohesion score. The goal is to diversify rather than repeatedly use the same conjunction (especially “then”).
| Function | Conjunction / expression |
|---|---|
| Beginning | First, / To begin with, / At the first stage, |
| Next step | Next, / Then, / After that, / Following this, |
| Higher-level transition | Subsequently, / At the following stage, |
| Simultaneity / condition | Once ..., / When ..., / As soon as ... |
| Cause-effect | As a result, / so that, / in order to |
| Final stage | Finally, / Lastly, / In the final stage, |
In cyclical processes, a special expression is needed to connect the end back to the beginning: “... at which point the cycle begins again / the process is repeated.”
Tip: “Once” and “When” conjunctions are very useful because they elegantly combine two stages: “Once the bricks have dried, they are fired in a kiln.” Such subordinate clauses provide the sentence variety required for Band 7+.
Clay dug from ground (digger) → passed through metal grid → rolled + sand & water added → shaped (mould OR wire cutter) → dried in drying oven → fired in kiln (moderate then high heat) → cooled in cooling chamber → packaged → delivered
Introduction. The diagram illustrates the various stages involved in the manufacture of bricks for the construction industry.
Overview. Overall, it is clear that brick production is a linear, man-made process comprising several distinct stages, beginning with the extraction of clay and ending with the delivery of the finished product.
Detail 1. At the first stage, clay is dug out of the ground using a large digger. The clay is then placed onto a metal grid, through which it is passed in order to break up larger pieces, before being transferred onto a roller. Once this has been done, sand and water are added to the clay, and the mixture is shaped into bricks either by being placed in a mould or by being cut with a wire.
Detail 2. Following this, the bricks are left to dry in a drying oven. Subsequently, they are fired in a kiln, where they are first heated at a moderate temperature and then at a much higher one. After being fired, the bricks are moved to a cooling chamber, where they are allowed to cool. Finally, once cool, the finished bricks are packaged and delivered to their destination.

English analysis:
Length: The model answer is 187 words — exactly within the target band of 170-200.
1. Etken çatı kullanmak. “The machine heats the clay” yerine akademik olan “The clay is heated” yazılmalı. Süreçte özne değil, malzemeye olan şey önemlidir.
Şemada rakam verilmemişse sen de vermezsin; “a high temperature” demek yeterlidir.
3. Aşama atlamak veya sırayı bozmak. Her okun/kutunun karşılığı yazılmalı. Bir aşamayı unutmak Task Achievement puanını düşürür. Yazmadan önce şemayı numaralandır.
4. Yorum / görüş eklemek. “This is an efficient process” ya da “in my opinion” gibi ifadeler Task 1'de yasaktır. Sadece süreci tarafsızca anlat.
5. Aynı bağlacı tekrarlamak. Her cümleye “then” ile başlamak monotonluk yaratır. after that, subsequently, following this, once ile çeşitlendir.
6. Overview'ı unutmak. Overview olmadan Band 6'nın üstüne çıkmak neredeyse imkânsızdır. Süreç kaç aşamalı, doğrusal mı döngüsel mi — mutlaka söyle.
1. Using active voice. Instead of “The machine heats the clay”, it should be written as the more academic “The clay is heated”. In the process, what happens to the material is important, not the subject.
2. Fabricating numbers/data. Do not write “increased by 40%” or “cooked at 200 degrees” like in graphs. If no numbers are given in the diagram, you do not provide them either; saying “at a high temperature” is sufficient.
3. Skipping stages or disrupting the order. Each line/box must correspond to what is written. Forgetting a stage lowers the Task Achievement score. Number the diagram before writing.
4. Adding comments/opinions. Phrases like “This is an efficient process” or “in my opinion” are prohibited in Task 1. Just describe the process objectively.
5. Repeating the same conjunction. Starting every sentence with “then” creates monotony. Diversify with after that, subsequently, following this, once.
6. Forgetting the Overview. It is nearly impossible to score above Band 6 without an Overview. State how many stages the process has, whether it is linear or cyclical — definitely mention it.
