The opinion essay is the most frequently encountered type in IELTS Writing Task 2 and asks you for one thing: state a clear opinion and defend it throughout. In this guide, you will learn the 4-paragraph structure, how to keep your position unchanged, and how to construct each body using claim-justification-example-conclusion. Soru kökü genellikle "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" ya da "Do you agree or disagree?" biçimindedir.
Toplam hedefin 270-300 kelime olsun.
An opinion essay is a type of essay that gives you a claim (statement) and asks, "How much do you agree with this?" The question stem is usually in the form of "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" or "Do you agree or disagree?" There is only one thing that determines the score in this type: take a clear position and defend it throughout the essay without changing it. A hesitant, indecisive answer cannot score above Band 6.
The winning structure in Task 2 is fixed: 4 paragraphs. Neither one less nor one more. A five-paragraph "high school composition" format weakens the assessment in IELTS; each paragraph must have a single and strong function.
Your total target should be 270-300 words. Below 250 incurs a penalty; above 320 usually indicates sloppiness and repetition. A quality 280 words will always score higher than a messy 350 words.

Most weak essays have body paragraphs that are only two sentences: one claim and one sentence that repeats it. A Band 7+ body consists of four clear steps. Apply this chain for each body; especially never skip the example step — a body without an example is considered an incomplete argument in IELTS.
Aynı kelimeyi tekrar tekrar kullanmaktan kaçın (örneğin her cümlede "because" dememek için gerekçe kolonundaki alternatiflere geç).
| İşlev | Akademik kalıplar |
|---|---|
| Görüş bildirme | I firmly believe that... / In my view... / I am convinced that... / From my perspective... |
| Gerekçe verme | This is because... / The main reason is that... / owing to... / stems from the fact that... |
| Örnek verme | For instance... / A clear example of this is... / This is illustrated by... / take X as a case in point |
| Sonuç / bağlama | Therefore... / Consequently... / As a result... / For this reason... |
| Karşı görüşü kabul (concession) | While it is true that... / Admittedly... / Although some argue that... / Granted, ... |
| Sınırlandırma (pozisyonu koruma) | nevertheless... / this concern is outweighed by... / this is a minor issue compared with... |
You need the right connectors for a clear position and a four-step flow. Memorize the patterns below; they will directly boost both your Lexical Resource and Coherence scores. Avoid repeating the same word over and over (for example, switch to alternatives in the justification column to avoid saying "because" in every sentence).
| Function | Academic patterns |
|---|---|
| Expressing opinion | I firmly believe that... / In my view... / I am convinced that... / From my perspective... |
| Providing justification | This is because... / The main reason is that... / owing to... / stems from the fact that... |
| Giving examples | For instance... / A clear example of this is... / This is illustrated by... / take X as a case in point |
| Conclusion / linking | Therefore... / Consequently... / As a result... / For this reason... |
| Accepting counterarguments (concession) | While it is true that... / Admittedly... / Although some argue that... / Granted, ... |
| Limiting (protecting position) | nevertheless... / this concern is outweighed by... / this is a minor issue compared with... |
Pozisyon tutarlılığı: Girişteki "I firmly believe... should be free for all" ile sonuçtaki "the state should bear this cost" birebir aynı yönde; okuyucu hiçbir yerde tereddüde düşmüyor. Conclusion özet yapmıyor, bir yargı cümlesiyle kapanıyor.
Below is a typical opinion question and its solved model at Band 8+ level with four paragraphs. While reading the model, pay attention to how the position remains the same in the introduction and conclusion, how each body follows the four steps, and how each body contains a concrete example.
Turkish analysis: The model is 281 words and consists of exactly four paragraphs. Position consistency: The "I firmly believe... should be free for all" in the introduction is exactly the same direction as the "the state should bear this cost" in the conclusion; the reader does not hesitate anywhere. Four steps: Body 1 follows the chain of claim (removes financial barriers) → justification (debt decides, not ability) → example (Scotland) → conclusion (talent pool) perfectly. Body 2 accepts the counterargument ("Admittedly...") and then limits it with "outweighed by" — a mature concession that strengthens the position. Example: Each body contains a concrete example from a country; no claim is left hanging. The conclusion does not summarize but ends with a judgment sentence.
