Mixed (multiple) chart questions are the most feared but actually the most manageable type of Task 1: you need to combine two separate visuals into a single balanced response. This page shows the 4-paragraph structure, time management, contextual language, and a step-by-step Band 8+ model solution. For a complete visual example, check the complete visual model page.
Dört paragraf, her zaman:
In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, sometimes not just a single visual but two different graphs together are provided: a bar graph + a pie chart, a line graph + a table, or a map + a graph, for example. This is called a mixed chart. The task remains the same: you need to select, compare, and summarize without adding commentary the information given to you. The difference is: you need to cover not just one visual, but both.
The biggest mistake students make is panicking and writing well about only one of the two graphs, neglecting the other. However, the evaluator (Task Achievement criterion) wants to see that the main features of both graphs are reported. The good news is: the structure is the same as the single graph structure you know — you just split the detail paragraphs in two.
Four paragraphs, always:
Note: never open a fifth paragraph in mixed tasks. Do not write a conclusion — the overview already serves that purpose. Allocating balanced space to both graphs is more important than a single rule: on average, divide the 170-200 words in half.
Model cevap (184 kelime)
Below is a real IELTS question of this type, the visual, and a Band 8+ model answer. The model answer is a direct application of the four-paragraph method on this page; pay attention to the function of each paragraph.
Model answer (184 words)
Mixed soruda 20 dakika aynıdır ama okunacak veri iki katıdır. Bu yüzden planlama daha kritiktir. Amacın, yazmaya başlamadan önce her iki görselin ana bulgusunu ve seçeceğin rakamları belirlemektir. Yazarken karar vermek zaman kaybettirir.
İki grafiği bağlamak neden puan getirir? Coherence & Cohesion kriteri, bilgiyi mekanik listelemek yerine ilişkilendirmeni ödüllendirir. “Grafik A şunu gösterir. Bağ kurabildiğin her yerde kur; kuramıyorsan zorlama, ama en azından zaman ve birim ortaklığını (“over the same decade”, “measured in the same units”) vurgula.
In a mixed question, 20 minutes is the same, but the data to be read is doubled. Therefore, planning is more critical. Your goal is to determine the main finding of both visuals and the figures you will choose before you start writing. Deciding while writing wastes time.
Why connecting two graphs brings points? The Coherence & Cohesion criterion rewards you for linking information instead of mechanically listing it. Saying “Graph A shows this. Graph B shows that” is weak; saying “The category that constitutes the largest slice in Graph B is also the fastest-growing item in Graph A” signals Band 7+. Establish connections wherever you can; if you can't, at least emphasize the commonality of time and units (“over the same decade”, “measured in the same units”).
Mixed soruda iki dil grubu birden lazım: (1) iki grafiği birbirine bağlayan ifadeler, (2) grafik içindeki verileri oranlayan/karşılaştıran ifadeler. Aşağıdaki kalıpları ezberle; tekrarsız fiil kullanımı Lexical Resource puanını doğrudan yükseltir.
| İşlev | İngilizce kalıp | Örnek kullanım |
|---|---|---|
| Zıtlık / paralel | while, whereas | Cars dominated the pie chart, whereas the line graph shows bus use falling. |
| İki grafik aynı yön | correspondingly, similarly | Spending rose sharply; correspondingly, the largest budget slice was housing. |
| Ortak zaman | in the same period, over the same years | In the same period, imports also climbed steadily. |
| Kat / misli oran | twice as much as, three times higher than | Retail earned twice as much as tourism. |
| Kesir / yüzde | accounted for a third of, made up 45% of | Transport accounted for a third of total emissions. |
| Yaklaşık oran | roughly, just under, well over | Just under half of respondents chose online shopping. |
Oran kuralı: Her cevabında en az bir kat/kesir ifadesi kullan (“twice as much as”, “a quarter of”).
Zaman kipine dikkat: Grafik gelecek/tahmin içeriyorsa (“projected”, “by 2030”) will / is expected to kullan; geçmiş veri için simple past; genel/statik oranlar için simple present. İki grafik farklı zaman kipi gerektirebilir — bu normaldir, karıştırma.
In a mixed question, two language groups are needed: (1) expressions that link the two graphs, (2) expressions that ratio/compare the data within the graph. Memorize the patterns below; unique verb usage directly increases your Lexical Resource score.
| Function | English phrase | Example usage |
|---|---|---|
| Contrast / parallel | while, whereas | Cars dominated the pie chart, whereas the line graph shows bus use falling. |
| Both graphs in the same direction | correspondingly, similarly | Spending rose sharply; correspondingly, the largest budget slice was housing. |
| Common time | in the same period, over the same years | In the same period, imports also climbed steadily. |
| Ratio / multiple | twice as much as, three times higher than | Retail earned twice as much as tourism. |
| Fraction / percentage | accounted for a third of, made up 45% of | Transport accounted for a third of total emissions. |
| Approximate ratio | roughly, just under, well over | Just under half of respondents chose online shopping. |
Ratio rule: Use at least one ratio/fraction expression in every answer (“twice as much as”, “a quarter of”). This is the only thing that translates raw figures into meaningful relationships and is a sign of maturity that evaluators look for. But don't exaggerate: using a ratio in every sentence makes the text tedious.
Pay attention to the tense: If the graph contains future/projection (“projected”, “by 2030”) use will / is expected to; for past data use simple past; for general/static ratios use simple present. Two graphs may require different tenses — this is normal, don't mix them up.
|---|---|---|
| Coal | 120 | 45 |
| Natural gas | 60 | 90 |
| Nuclear | 40 | 50 |
| Renewables | 10 | 115 |
| Pasta grafik — 2020 tüketimi (%) | Pay |

| Industry | 40% |
| Households | 33% |
| Commercial | 18% |
| Transport | 9% |
Introduction. The bar chart compares how much electricity four sources generated in one country in 2000 and 2020, measured in terawatt hours, while the pie chart breaks down which sectors consumed that electricity in 2020.
Overview. Overall, generation shifted dramatically from coal towards renewables over the two decades, with renewables becoming the leading source. In terms of consumption, industry and households together used almost three quarters of the electricity produced in 2020.
Detail 1. In 2000, coal was by far the dominant source at 120 TWh, roughly twice as much as natural gas and twelve times the output of renewables. By 2020 this picture had reversed: coal plunged to just 45 TWh, whereas renewables surged to 115 TWh, making them the largest generator. Natural gas rose from 60 to 90 TWh, and nuclear edged up modestly from 40 to 50 TWh.
Detail 2. Turning to consumption in the same year, industry took the biggest share at 40%, followed by households at 33%. Commercial use accounted for 18%, while transport consumed the least, at only 9% — well under half the share of households.
Kelime sayısı: 188. Model 170-200 bandında; dört paragraf etiketli.

4. Her rakamı yazmak. Seç: her grafikten 2-3 anlamlı karşılaştırma yeter.
5. Yorum ve neden eklemek. “Renewables grew because the government invested…” Task 1'de neden/yorum yasak. Sadece görselde ne var onu raporla.
6. Grafikleri zorla ilişkilendirmek. Bağ kurmak iyidir ama iki grafik gerçekten ilgisizse yapay köprü (“therefore the pie chart shows…”) mantık hatası yaratır. Bağ yoksa ortak zaman/birimi vurgulamakla yetin.
1. Ignoring a graph. The most common and costly mistake. The student writes the bar graph nicely but only mentions the pie chart in one sentence. The Task Achievement criterion checks “are the main features reported for both graphs?”; missing a graph directly pulls the score to Band 5-6. Solution: split your word budget in half before writing.
2. Summarizing only one in the overview. The overview should be two sentences: one main finding from each graph. Writing only the trend of the bar graph and completely omitting the pie chart from the overview is a common trap. For the evaluator, the overview is the heart of your answer — it should reflect both visuals.
3. Poor time management. Reading two graphs takes time, so students either skip planning (resulting in a messy answer) or get too absorbed in the first graph and leave no time for the second. 3 minutes for planning + maintain equal writing time discipline.
4. Writing every number. In Mixed, since the data is doubled, the urge to “write everything” is stronger. Result: 250+ words, mechanical list, low Coherence. Choose: 2-3 meaningful comparisons from each graph are sufficient.
5. Adding commentary and reasons. “Renewables grew because the government invested…” Reasons/comments are prohibited in Task 1. Just report what is in the visual.
6. Forcing a connection between the graphs. Making connections is good, but if the two graphs are truly unrelated, an artificial bridge (“therefore the pie chart shows…”) creates a logical fallacy. If there is no connection, just emphasize common time/unit.
