Bu sayfa çizgi grafiği (line graph) betimlemeyi Gri English'in 4 paragraf metoduyla anlatır; teknik terimler ve model cevap İngilizce, açıklamalar Türkçedir.
This page explains how to describe a line graph using the Gri English's 4 paragraph method; technical terms and model answers are in English, while explanations are in Turkish.
Line graph, IELTS Writing Task 1'in en sık çıkan ve en çok fiil çeşitliliği isteyen görselidir: zaman içindeki eğilimi anlatırsınız. Bu rehber 4 paragraflık yapıyı, tekrarsız trend dilini, oran ifadelerini ve tam çözümlü bir model cevabı adım adım gösterir. Görselli tam model için IELTS örnek sorular sayfasına da bakabilirsiniz.
Line graph is the most common visual in IELTS Writing Task 1 that requires a variety of verbs: you describe trends over time. This guide shows the 4-paragraph structure, unique trend language, expression of ratios, and a fully worked model answer step by step. For a complete visual model, you can also check the IELTS sample questions page.
Overview olmadan Band 6 yok.
Line graph is a visual that shows the change of one or more values over time. The horizontal axis usually represents years/months, while the vertical axis shows the measured quantity (number of people, percentage, temperature, sales, etc.). What is required from you in Task 1 is to describe this change objectively: no guessing why, making comments, or giving opinions.
In the Gri English method, each Task 1 answer consists of exactly 4 paragraphs. No more (5th paragraph) and no less (without an overview):
No Band 6 without Overview. A clear overview sentence in the IELTS assessment criteria (Task Achievement) is the only element that directly contributes to the score. When the examiner looks at your answer, this is the first thing they look for; a text without an overview is fixed at Band 5 as an activity.
The total length must be 170-200 words. Being below 150 words incurs a penalty; exceeding 200 is a waste of time and increases the risk of more mistakes. Select meaningful numbers (start, end, peak, trough, intersection points), not all numbers.

|---|---|---|
| Artış | rise, increase, climb, grow, surge, soar, rocket, jump | a rise, an increase, growth, a surge, an upward trend |
| Düşüş | fall, decline, decrease, drop, dip, plunge, plummet, slump | a fall, a decline, a drop, a downward trend |
| Sabitlik | level off, remain stable, stay constant, plateau, stabilise | stability, a plateau, no change |
| Dalgalanma | fluctuate, oscillate, vary | a fluctuation, variation |
| Zirve / Dip | peak (at), reach a high, hit a low, bottom out | a peak, a high point, a trough, a low |
Şimdi hızı belirten zarflar ve karşılıkları:
| Ne kadar? | Zarf (fiille) | Sıfat (isimle) |
|---|---|---|
| Hızlı / keskin | sharply, rapidly, dramatically, steeply | a sharp / rapid / dramatic rise |
| Yavaş / kademeli | gradually, steadily, slowly | a gradual / steady / slow decline |
| Az / hafif | slightly, marginally | a slight / marginal drop |
| Belirgin | significantly, considerably, markedly | a significant / considerable increase |
İki cümle kalıbı ezberle: (1) Fiil kalıbı: "Sales rose sharply from X to Y." (2) İsim kalıbı: "There was a sharp rise in sales, from X to Y." İkisini dönüşümlü kullanmak hem gramer hem kelime çeşitliliği (grammatical range) kazandırır.
What distinguishes a line graph from other visuals is action verbs. A high band is achieved by being able to show variety without repeating the same verb ("increase... increase... increase"). Combining a verb with an adverb (how fast?) raises the Lexical Resource score: "rose sharply", "fell gradually".
| Action | Verbs (verbs) | Noun form (nouns) |
|---|---|---|
| Increase | rise, increase, climb, grow, surge, soar, rocket, jump | a rise, an increase, growth, a surge, an upward trend |
| Decrease | fall, decline, decrease, drop, dip, plunge, plummet, slump | a fall, a decline, a drop, a downward trend |
| Stability | level off, remain stable, stay constant, plateau, stabilise | stability, a plateau, no change |
| Fluctuation | fluctuate, oscillate, vary | a fluctuation, variation |
| Peak / Trough | peak (at), reach a high, hit a low, bottom out | a peak, a high point, a trough, a low |
Now the adverbs indicating speed and their counterparts:
| How much? | Adverb (with verb) | Adjective (with noun) |
|---|---|---|
| Fast / sharp | sharply, rapidly, dramatically, steeply | a sharp / rapid / dramatic rise |
| Slow / gradual | gradually, steadily, slowly | a gradual / steady / slow decline |
| Little / slight | slightly, marginally | a slight / marginal drop |
| Significant | significantly, considerably, markedly | a significant / considerable increase |
Memorize these two sentence patterns: (1) Verb pattern: "Sales rose sharply from X to Y." (2) Noun pattern: "There was a sharp rise in sales, from X to Y." Using both alternately provides both grammatical and lexical variety.
Line graph'ta çizgiler birbiriyle yarışır: biri diğerinin iki katıdır, biri onu geçer, biri arayı kapatır. Bu karşılaştırmaları yapmak, sadece sayıları sıralamaktan çok daha yüksek band getirir çünkü Task Achievement kriteri "veriyi karşılaştırma" becerisini ödüllendirir. En az bir oran ifadesi kullanmak Gri English metodunda zorunludur.
| İlişki | İfade (English) |
|---|---|
| İki katı | twice as high as / double the figure for / roughly double |
| Yarısı | half as many as / half the figure for |
| Üç / dört katı artış | a threefold increase / rose fourfold / a fivefold rise |
| Karşılaştırma bağlacı | compared with / in contrast to / whereas / while |
| Geçme / yakalama | overtook / caught up with / drew level with / surpassed |
| Fark | the gap widened / the gap narrowed / far higher than |
Yaklaştırma güvenlidir: Grafikten tam sayıyı okuyamıyorsan approximately, around, just over, just under, nearly, roughly kullan. "just over 20 million" demek, yanlış sayı yazmaktan iyidir ve doğal İngilizce sesi verir.
In a line graph, the lines compete with each other: one is twice as high as the other, one overtakes the other, one closes the gap. Making these comparisons brings a much higher band than simply listing numbers because the Task Achievement criterion rewards the skill of "comparing data." Using at least one ratio expression is mandatory in the Gri English method.
| Relationship | Expression (English) |
|---|---|
| Twice as high | twice as high as / double the figure for / roughly double |
| Half | half as many as / half the figure for |
| Three / fourfold increase | a threefold increase / rose fourfold / a fivefold rise |
| Comparison conjunction | compared with / in contrast to / whereas / while |
| Overtaking / catching up | overtook / caught up with / drew level with / surpassed |
| Difference | the gap widened / the gap narrowed / far higher than |
Estimating is safe: If you cannot read the exact number from the graph, use approximately, around, just over, just under, nearly, roughly. Saying "just over 20 million" is better than writing the wrong number and sounds natural in English.
Aşağıdaki senaryoyu birlikte çözelim. Önce grafiğin verisi, sonra 4 paragraflık model cevap, en sonda Türkçe analiz.
Soru. The line graph below shows the number of visitors (in millions) to three types of tourist attraction in a country between 2000 and 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
| Year | Museums | Theme parks | Historic sites |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 | 10 | 8 | 6 |
| 2005 | 12 | 14 | 7 |
| 2010 | 15 | 20 | 9 |
| 2015 | 18 | 22 | 8 |
| 2020 | 22 | 19 | 10 |
(Değerler milyon kişi.)
Let's solve the following scenario together. First, the data of the graph, then the 4-paragraph model answer, and finally the analysis in Turkish.

(Values in millions.)
1. Overview'de sayı yazmak. Genel bakış paragrafı büyük resmi verir; rakam detay paragraflarına aittir. Overview'de "reached 22 million" görmek, sınav görevlisine "bu aday overview ile detay ayrımını bilmiyor" mesajı verir.
2. Tüm sayıları sıralamak. "In 2000 it was 10, in 2005 it was 12, in 2010 it was 15..." bir tablo okuma alıştırmasıdır, betimleme değil. Yalnızca anlamlı noktaları seç: başlangıç, bitiş, tepe, dip, kesişim.
3. Fiil tekrarı. Her cümlede "increase" kullanmak Band 6 tavanıdır. Yukarıdaki bankadan climb, surge, soar, grow gibi eşanlamlılara geç ve zarflarla renklendir.
4. Yorum / neden eklemek. "Theme parks became popular because people had more free time" Task 1'de yasaktır — grafikte bu bilgi yoktur. Yalnızca ne olduğunu anlat, neden olduğunu değil.
5. Yanlış zaman kullanımı. Grafik geçmiş yılları (2000-2020) gösteriyorsa past tense (rose, fell) kullan. Gelecek projeksiyonu (kesikli çizgi) varsa is expected/projected to kullan.
1. Writing numbers in the Overview. The overview paragraph gives the big picture; numbers belong to the detail paragraphs. Seeing "reached 22 million" in the overview sends a message to the examiner that "this candidate does not know the distinction between overview and detail."
2. Listing all numbers. Saying "In 2000 it was 10, in 2005 it was 12, in 2010 it was 15..." is an exercise in reading a table, not a description. Only select meaningful points: start, end, peak, trough, intersection.
3. Repeating verbs. Using "increase" in every sentence is the ceiling of Band 6. Move to synonyms from the bank above like climb, surge, soar, grow and color them with adverbs.
4. Adding comments / reasons. "Theme parks became popular because people had more free time" is prohibited in Task 1 — this information is not in the graph. Only describe what happened, not why it happened.
5. Incorrect tense usage. If the graph shows past years (2000-2020), use past tense (rose, fell). If there is a future projection (dashed line), use is expected/projected to.
