The bar chart (column chart) measures the comparison between groups and categories in Task 1; selecting the highest/lowest values and explaining with ratios creates the difference for Band 7+. For a complete visual example, check the complete model page.
Hedef uzunluk 170-200 kelime. Değerlendirme dört ölçüte dayanır: Task Achievement (görevi tam ve doğru betimleme + overview), Coherence & Cohesion (paragraflama ve bağlaçlar), Lexical Resource (tekrarsız kelime), Grammatical Range (cümle çeşitliliği). Overview eksikse Task Achievement 5'in üzerine çıkamaz; bu yüzden overview pazarlık konusu değildir.
A bar chart (column chart) is a visual that shows the values of different groups or categories side by side in columns. The typical bar chart you encounter in Task 1 compares multiple groups (for example, countries, age groups, years) across multiple categories. While the main focus in a line graph is change over time, the main focus in a bar chart is almost always comparison between groups: who is ahead, who is behind, how large is the difference.
A bar chart comes in two basic types. A static bar chart compares values at a specific point in time (for example, 2022); there is no trend here, only comparison. A time-based (grouped) bar chart shows several years with column groups; in this case, in addition to comparison, you also write the increase/decrease trend. Determine the type of the graph in the first 30 seconds, as this directly changes your overview sentence.
The target length is 170-200 words. Evaluation is based on four criteria: Task Achievement (accurate and complete description of the task + overview), Coherence & Cohesion (paragraphing and conjunctions), Lexical Resource (unique vocabulary), Grammatical Range (variety of sentences). If the overview is missing, Task Achievement cannot exceed 5; therefore, the overview is not negotiable.

İki grubu her defasında "X is bigger than Y" diye anlatırsan Lexical Resource ve Grammatical Range takılır. Aşağıdaki tablo, aynı fikri farklı ağırlıklarda söylemenin yollarını verir.
| İşlev | Kalıp (İngilizce) | Açıklama |
|---|---|---|
| En yüksek | the highest / the largest / topped the ranking / peaked at | Bir kategorinin zirvesi |
| En düşük | the lowest / the smallest / the least common / bottomed out | En düşük değer |
| Kat karşılaştırma | twice as many as / three times higher than / half that of | Oransal fark (en güçlü araç) |
| Zıtlık | whereas / while / in contrast / on the other hand | İki grubu karşı karşıya koyar |
| Kıyaslama | compared with / in comparison to / relative to | Bir grubu referans alır |
| Benzerlik | similarly / likewise / a comparable figure / roughly the same as | Yakın değerleri gruplar |
| Fark büyüklüğü | markedly / significantly / slightly / marginally higher | Farkın derecesini ayarlar |
Kritik bir uyarı: karşılaştırma yaparken karşılaştırdığın şeylerin dengeli olması gerekir. "Laptop ownership in Japan was higher than Brazil" hatalıdır; doğrusu "...higher than that of Brazil" veya "...than in Brazil"dır. Yani ülkeyle rakamı değil, rakamla rakamı kıyaslarsın.
The heart of the bar chart is comparison; what raises your score is expressing this comparison with varied and accurate structures. If you describe two groups every time as "X is bigger than Y," Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range will be hindered. The table below provides ways to express the same idea with different weights.
| Function | Template (English) | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Highest | the highest / the largest / topped the ranking / peaked at | The peak of a category |
| Lowest | the lowest / the smallest / the least common / bottomed out | The lowest value |
| Ratio comparison | twice as many as / three times higher than / half that of | Proportional difference (the strongest tool) |
| Contrast | whereas / while / in contrast / on the other hand | Contrasts two groups |
| Comparison | compared with / in comparison to / relative to | Takes one group as a reference |
| Similarity | similarly / likewise / a comparable figure / roughly the same as | Groups close values |
| Magnitude of difference | markedly / significantly / slightly / marginally higher | Sets the degree of difference |
A critical warning: when making comparisons, the things you are comparing must be balanced. Saying "Laptop ownership in Japan was higher than Brazil" is incorrect; the correct form is "...higher than that of Brazil" or "...than in Brazil." In other words, you compare numbers with numbers, not a country with a number.
The two hidden engines of a Band 7+ writing are: adding depth to numbers with ratio/fraction language and selecting which numbers to write. Weak writings list all columns one by one ("Smartphones were 92, laptops 74, TVs 68..."); this becomes a list, not a description. Strong writings highlight the most striking comparisons, group similar values, and summarize the rest with ratios.
Ratio and fraction bank: Being able to express the same 64% in different ways increases your lexical variety score.
The general rule: in a Task 1 response, it is sufficient to include the most meaningful 8-12 data points, not all numbers. The goal is for the reader to grasp the main pattern without reading the graph. When selecting numbers, ask yourself: "Does this figure show a comparison, or does it just fill space?"
Soru: The chart below shows the percentage of households that owned four types of electronic devices in three countries in 2022. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
| Cihaz (device) | Japan | Brazil | India |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smartphone | 92% | 78% | 64% |
| Laptop | 74% | 41% | 29% |
| Smart TV | 68% | 52% | 38% |
| Tablet | 55% | 24% | 12% |
Band 8+ Model Cevap (179 kelime):
Introduction: The bar chart illustrates the proportion of households owning four types of electronic devices—smartphones, laptops, smart TVs and tablets—in Japan, Brazil and India in 2022.
Overview: Overall, Japan led ownership across every device category, whereas India consistently recorded the lowest figures. In addition, smartphones were by far the most widely owned device in all three nations, while tablets remained the least common.
Detail 1: In Japan, smartphones topped the ranking, found in over nine in ten homes, followed closely by laptops. Smart TVs were present in around two-thirds of Japanese households, and even tablets, the least popular item, reached more than half. Brazil displayed a similar order but at markedly lower levels; for instance, laptop ownership there was little more than half that of Japan.
Detail 2: India presented the most modest picture. Although smartphones still dominated at roughly 64 percent, ownership of the remaining devices fell steeply, with tablets confined to a mere 12 percent—almost five times fewer than in Japan. A comparable gap emerged for laptops, which nearly three in ten Indian homes possessed, compared with three-quarters in Japan.

This is a static bar chart (single year, no trend) — therefore, the focus is entirely on the comparison between countries and devices. First, the data table:
| Device (device) | Japan | Brazil | India |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smartphone | 92% | 78% | 64% |
| Laptop | 74% | 41% | 29% |
| Smart TV | 68% | 52% | 38% |
| Tablet | 55% | 24% | 12% |
