Bu rehber Advantages & Disadvantages essay tipini adım adım Türkçe anlatır; soru ve model essay İngilizce verilmiştir.
This guide explains the Advantages & Disadvantages essay type step by step in Turkish; the question and model essay are provided in English.
The Advantages & Disadvantages essay is a 4-paragraph Task 2 writing that addresses the pros and cons of a trend in a balanced manner — if the question asks whether the advantages “outweigh” the disadvantages, you must clearly decide which one is more significant.
Advantages & Disadvantages essay is a Task 2 type that asks you to consider both the pros and cons of a development, trend, or option. However, within this type, there are two different question formats, and mixing them is the most common reason for losing points:
On this page, we focus specifically on the outweigh version, which is particularly challenging and where students make the most mistakes; because this version requires both balanced discussion and a clear decision.
The 4 paragraph rule remains unchanged in this type. In the grey English method, Task 2 is always four paragraphs — neither less nor more:
Why never 5 paragraphs? Because developing 4 paragraphs in depth in 40 minutes yields a much higher score than superficially covering 5 paragraphs. IELTS measures not the number of ideas but how well the ideas are developed. Two strong, fully justified paragraphs are superior to four weak ones.
Summary: Body 1 = advantages, Body 2 = disadvantages. Position is clear in the introduction and conclusion. Four paragraphs, 270-300 words.
Model cevap (281 kelime)
Below is a real IELTS question of this type, its visual, and a Band 8+ model answer. The model answer is a direct application of the four-paragraph method on this page; pay attention to the function of each paragraph.
Model answer (281 words)
The biggest trap of this type is to list the advantages and disadvantages. A paragraph that goes “The first advantage is this, the second advantage is that, the third advantage is this…” will lower both Coherence and Task Response scores. The evaluator wants to see each idea in a chain:
How many ideas? For each body, one strong idea + full development is ideal; at most two. Discussing one advantage in four sentences is much more valuable than covering three advantages in one sentence each.
Balance in examples: Body 1 and Body 2 should be approximately the same length and depth. If the advantage paragraph is long and the disadvantage paragraph is short, the reader may get the impression that “this person is not actually looking at it in a balanced way” — this is a risk for Task Response. Treat both sides fairly; indicate your side in the conclusion, not by paragraph length.
The golden rule: Each paragraph should be a chain — CLAIM explains why it is correct (REASON), how it appears (EXAMPLE), what it means (CONCLUSION). Write arguments, not lists.
|---|---|---|
| Büyük avantaj vurgusu | a major benefit / a significant advantage | büyük bir fayda / önemli bir avantaj |
| Ciddi dezavantaj vurgusu | a serious drawback / a considerable price | ciddi bir sakınca / hatırı sayılır bir bedel |
| Tartı / ağır basma | the drawbacks outweigh the benefits | sakıncalar faydalardan ağır basar |
| Nihai karar (sonuç) | on balance / all things considered | her şey tartıldığında / genel olarak |
| Dezavantajı küçültme | this can be managed by… / this is a minor concern | bu… ile yönetilebilir / bu küçük bir mesele |
| Avantajı küçültme | this gain is short-lived / relatively modest | bu kazanım geçici / görece küçük |
| Kabul + karşı çıkış | while this is true, … / admittedly, yet… | bu doğru olsa da… / kuşkusuz, ama… |
Neden “this can be managed by…” güçlü bir kalıp?
Pozisyon dili tutarlı olmalı: Girişte “the disadvantages outweigh” dediysen, sonuçta da aynı yönde bitirmelisin. Ortada fikir değiştirmek (giriş bir taraf, sonuç öbür taraf) en ağır Task Response hatalarından biridir.
İpucu: Sonuç cümlende mutlaka bir tartı ifadesi geçsin: “On balance, the disadvantages clearly outweigh the advantages.”
High band in outweigh questions comes from using weighing language. You use evaluative phrases to show whether an advantage is small or large, whether a disadvantage is minor or serious. These expressions enhance both Lexical Resource score and clarify your position in Task Response.
| Function | Expression (English) | Turkish equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Emphasis on major advantage | a major benefit / a significant advantage | büyük bir fayda / önemli bir avantaj |
| Emphasis on serious disadvantage | a serious drawback / a considerable price | ciddi bir sakınca / hatırı sayılır bir bedel |
| Weighing / outweighing | the drawbacks outweigh the benefits | sakıncalar faydalardan ağır basar |
| Final decision (conclusion) | on balance / all things considered | her şey tartıldığında / genel olarak |
| Minimizing disadvantage | this can be managed by… / this is a minor concern | bu… ile yönetilebilir / bu küçük bir mesele |
| Minimizing advantage | this gain is short-lived / relatively modest | bu kazanım geçici / görece küçük |
| Acceptance + counterargument | while this is true, … / admittedly, yet… | bu doğru olsa da… / kuşkusuz, ama… |
Why is “this can be managed by…” a strong phrase? Because it shows that a disadvantage is manageable, proving why the advantages outweigh. The reverse is also true: stating that an advantage is temporary highlights the disadvantages. Weighing is this relative weighting.
Position language must be consistent: If you said in the introduction “the disadvantages outweigh,” you must conclude in the same direction. Changing your mind in the middle (the introduction takes one side, the conclusion takes the other) is one of the most serious Task Response errors.
Tip: Be sure to include a weighing expression in your conclusion: “On balance, the disadvantages clearly outweigh the advantages.”
Soru:
In many countries, more and more people choose to buy food that has been imported from abroad rather than food produced locally. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?
Band 8+ Model (271 kelime, 4 paragraf):
Introduction
It is increasingly common for consumers to prefer food imported from abroad over produce grown in their own region. Although this shift undeniably widens dietary variety and convenience, I would argue that its drawbacks, particularly the environmental and economic costs, ultimately outweigh its benefits.
Body 1 — Advantages
On the positive side, imported food dramatically expands the choices available to shoppers. Because many crops cannot grow in every climate, importing allows people to enjoy tropical fruits, spices and out-of-season vegetables all year round. In northern European countries, for instance, supermarkets now stock mangoes and avocados in mid-winter, a luxury that was unthinkable a generation ago. This abundance not only enriches everyday diets but also enables consumers to maintain a more balanced and nutritious lifestyle regardless of where they live, which is a genuine improvement in quality of life.
Body 2 — Disadvantages
Nevertheless, these gains come at a considerable price. Transporting perishable goods across continents by air or sea generates enormous carbon emissions, accelerating climate change in a way that local farming rarely does. Moreover, the popularity of cheap imports frequently undercuts domestic producers, driving small farms out of business and weakening rural economies. In several developing nations, traditional agriculture has collapsed because families can no longer compete with subsidised foreign products, leaving communities dependent and jobless. Such lasting harm to the planet and to livelihoods is difficult to justify when cheaper, greener alternatives exist on our own doorstep.
Conclusion — Tartı
In conclusion, while imported food undeniably offers greater variety and convenience, the environmental damage and the destruction of local farming represent far more serious long-term consequences. On balance, therefore, I believe the disadvantages of this trend clearly outweigh its advantages.

Turkish analysis — why is this model Band 8+?
1. Pozisyon vermemek.
2. Sadece listelemek (gerekçe/örnek yok). “İlk avantajı seçenek, ikincisi kolaylık, üçüncüsü çeşit…” diye giden bir paragraf argüman değildir. Az fikir seç, her birini İDDİA→GEREKÇE→ÖRNEK→SONUÇ zinciriyle geliştir.
3. Conclusion'da tartı kurmamak. Sonucu sadece “In conclusion, there are advantages and disadvantages” diye kapatmak en yaygın hata. Sonuç, iki tarafı tartıp karar vermek zorundadır: “on balance, the disadvantages outweigh…”
4. 5 paragraf yazmak.
1. Not providing a position. If the question asks “outweigh?” and you simply say “there are some advantages, there are some disadvantages” and leave it at that, you have not answered the question. You must state which side is more significant in the introduction and conclusion.
2. Just listing (no reason/example). A paragraph that goes “The first advantage is this, the second is convenience, the third is variety…” is not an argument. Choose fewer ideas and develop each one with the CLAIM→REASON→EXAMPLE→CONCLUSION chain.
3. Not establishing weighing in the conclusion. Closing with just “In conclusion, there are advantages and disadvantages” is the most common mistake. The conclusion must weigh both sides and make a decision: “on balance, the disadvantages outweigh…”
4. Writing 5 paragraphs. Thinking “I’ll add a third body” or “each idea should be in a separate paragraph” leads you to superficiality and runs out of time. The structure is always 4 paragraphs: introduction, two bodies, conclusion.
5. One side in the introduction, the other in the conclusion. You must be consistent throughout. Changing your mind in the middle gives the evaluator the impression of indecision and lowers Task Response.
6. Unbalanced paragraphs. Leaving the advantage paragraph long and the disadvantage paragraph with only two sentences. Treat both sides fairly; indicate your side not by length but by the weighing in the conclusion.
