Anlatım Türkçe; sınav soruları ve model cevaplar İngilizce verilmiştir.
The commentary is in English; the exam questions and model answers are shown in English.
Part 3 is the most academic section of the Speaking exam and the one that separates scores the most. The questions grow out of the topic you spoke about in Part 2, but they are no longer personal — they are abstract and general: social trends, comparisons, predictions about the future, cause and effect, and advantages and disadvantages. The examiner pushes you to justify your opinion, give examples and weigh up the opposing view. On this page you'll find the opinion → reason → example → speculation → linking structure that earns Band 7+, the tools for abstract language and prediction, worked model answers and the most common mistakes.
Cevabını sürekli derinleştirmen, "Why do you think so?", "Can you give an example?" ya da "Do you think that will change?" gibi takip soruları gelmesini beklemeden fikrini genişletmen gerekir. Soru tipleri genellikle şu beş kategoriden gelir:
Puan mantığı. Part 3, Fluency & Coherence (fikri mantıklı sıralama), Lexical Resource (soyut/akademik kelime) ve Grammatical Range (koşul cümleleri, karşılaştırma yapıları) kriterlerini en çok zorlayan bölümdür. Kısa ve yüzeysel cevaplar burada Band 6 tavanına takılır; Band 7+ demek fikri gerekçeleyip geliştirmek demektir.
Part 3 is the final section of the Speaking exam and lasts about 4-5 minutes. The questions grow out of the topic you talked about in Part 2, but they are no longer personal to your own life; they are about the abstract and social dimension around that topic. For example, if Part 2 asked you to “describe a teacher you liked”, Part 3 brings questions like “What makes a good teacher?”, “Has technology changed the role of teachers?” or “What will schools be like in the future?”.
In this section the examiner draws you into a discussion. You have to keep deepening your answer and expand your point without waiting for follow-up questions like "Why do you think so?", "Can you give an example?" or "Do you think that will change?". The question types usually fall into these five categories:
The scoring logic. Part 3 is the section that most tests Fluency & Coherence (ordering ideas logically), Lexical Resource (abstract/academic vocabulary) and Grammatical Range (conditional sentences, comparison structures). Short, superficial answers hit a Band 6 ceiling here; Band 7+ means justifying and developing your idea.
Band 7+ cevaplar rastgele uzun değildir; belli bir iç mimariye sahiptir. Her Part 3 sorusuna aşağıdaki beş adımı uygulayabilirsin. Hepsini her seferinde kullanman şart değil, ama en az görüş + gerekçe + örnek üçlüsü olmalı; karşılaştırma/gelecek sorularında spekülasyon da eklenir.
Bu yapı seni iki tuzaktan kurtarır: cevabı tek cümlede bırakmak (Fluency düşüşü) ve dağınık uzatmak (Coherence düşüşü). Adımlar arasında geçiş bağlaçları kullandığında sınav görevlisi fikrinin nereye gittiğini net görür.
Kural. Fikir cümlesi kadar gerekçe cümlesi de söyle. Aklında "nokta koyacağım" dediğin yerde because ya da which means ekleyip bir cümle daha uzat.
Band 7+ answers are not randomly long; they have a definite internal architecture. You can apply the five steps below to any Part 3 question. You don't have to use them all every time, but you should at least have the opinion + reason + example trio; for comparison/future questions you add speculation too.
This structure saves you from two traps: leaving your answer at one sentence (a drop in Fluency) and rambling on in a scattered way (a drop in Coherence). When you use transition connectives between the steps, the examiner clearly sees where your idea is going.
The rule. Say as many reason sentences as opinion sentences. Where you feel like “putting a full stop”, add because or which means and extend it by one more sentence.
Part 3'ün ayrıştırıcı dili soyut, akademik ve temkinli dildir. Kesin konuşmak yerine ("this is true") olasılık ve genelleme diliyle konuşmak ("this tends to be true") hem daha doğal hem de daha yüksek puanlıdır. Aşağıdaki tabloda işlevlere göre kullanabileceğin kalıplar var.
| İşlev | Band 7+ ifade (İngilizce) |
|---|---|
| Görüş bildirme | In my view, / I'd argue that, / It seems to me that |
| Gerekçelendirme | because, / which means that, / and this is largely due to |
| Örnek verme | for instance, / a good example of this is, / take X, for example |
| Karşılaştırma / zıtlık | whereas, / compared to, / on the other hand, / that said |
| Spekülasyon / tahmin | it could lead to, / this might result in, / X would probably, / is likely to |
| Genelleme | people tend to, / on the whole, / generally speaking, / by and large |
| Sonuç / bağlama | as a result, / consequently, / in the long run, / on balance |
Bir de basit dili akademik dile yükseltme alışkanlığı kazan. Aynı fikri söylerken sıradan kelimeyi bir üst tona taşımak Lexical Resource puanını doğrudan yükseltir:
Denge uyarısı. Akademik kelimeyi doğru ve doğal kullan. Cümleyi ezber kalıplarla doldurmak ("In this modern era of globalization...") yapaydır ve puanı düşürür. Az ama yerinde soyut ifade, çok ama zoraki ifadeden iyidir.
The distinguishing language of Part 3 is abstract, academic and cautious language. Rather than speaking in absolutes ("this is true"), speaking in the language of probability and generalisation ("this tends to be true") is both more natural and higher-scoring. The table below has patterns you can use grouped by function.
| Function | Band 7+ expression (English) |
|---|---|
| Stating an opinion | In my view, / I'd argue that, / It seems to me that |
| Justifying | because, / which means that, / and this is largely due to |
| Giving an example | for instance, / a good example of this is, / take X, for example |
| Comparison / contrast | whereas, / compared to, / on the other hand, / that said |
| Speculation / prediction | it could lead to, / this might result in, / X would probably, / is likely to |
| Generalisation | people tend to, / on the whole, / generally speaking, / by and large |
| Conclusion / linking | as a result, / consequently, / in the long run, / on balance |
Also build the habit of upgrading simple language to academic language. Carrying an ordinary word up a register while saying the same idea directly raises your Lexical Resource score:
A balance warning. Use academic words correctly and naturally. Padding your sentences with memorised formulas ("In this modern era of globalization...") is artificial and lowers your score. A little well-placed abstract language beats a lot of forced language.
Aşağıda üç tipik Part 3 sorusu ve her biri için Band 7+ model cevap var. Her cevabın altında hangi adımların ve hangi kriterlerin işlediğini Türkçe olarak çözümledim. Model cevapların uzunluğuna dikkat et: kısa değiller, ama dağılmıyorlar da.
Soru. Do you think the way people communicate has changed compared to the past?
Çözüm: Öğrenci önce net görüş verdi ("the change has been dramatic"), sonra whereas ile geçmiş-bugün karşılaştırması yaptı (Grammatical Range). This means / which is a huge benefit ile gerekçelendirdi. That said... because ile karşı görüş + gerekçe ekledi. on the whole... but arguably shallower ile dengeli bir sonuca bağladı (Coherence). Bu, tek boyutlu değil iki taraflı bir cevap.
Soru. How do you think education will change in the next few decades?
Çözüm: Gelecek sorusunda spekülasyon dili şart. Öğrenci will / could / might / may yelpazesini kullandı (Grammatical Range: modal çeşitliliği). largely because of ile gerekçe, For instance ile örnek, In the long run ile zaman bağlacı verdi. En önemlisi: Having said that... because ile abartıya kaçmayıp dengeli bir tahmin yaptı; bu, olgun bir muhakeme sinyalidir.
Soru. What are the advantages and disadvantages of people working from home?
Çözüm: Avantaj-dezavantaj sorusunda yapı netliği puan getirir. Öğrenci The main advantage is... On the other hand, the biggest drawback is... kalıbıyla iki tarafı açıkça ayırdı (Coherence). Her iki tarafı da which tends to / because ile gerekçeledi. on balance... whereas ile mutlak yargı vermek yerine koşula bağlı bir sonuç verdi — bu, Band 7+ muhakemesinin tipik işaretidir.
Model çıkarımı. Üç cevabın da ortak paydası: net görüş, en az bir because/which means, bir örnek, bir karşı açı ve dengeli bir kapanış. Bu şablonu içselleştir; konu ne olursa olsun işler.
Below are three typical Part 3 questions and, for each, a Band 7+ model answer. Under each answer I have analysed which steps and which criteria are at work. Note the length of the model answers: they are not short, but they don't ramble either.
Question. Do you think the way people communicate has changed compared to the past?
Analysis: The student first gave a clear opinion ("the change has been dramatic"), then, with whereas, made a past-present comparison (Grammatical Range). They justified it with This means / which is a huge benefit. With That said... because they added a counterview + reason. With on the whole... but arguably shallower they tied it to a balanced conclusion (Coherence). This is a two-sided answer, not a one-dimensional one.
Question. How do you think education will change in the next few decades?
Analysis: A future question demands the language of speculation. The student used the range will / could / might / may (Grammatical Range: a variety of modals). They gave a reason with largely because of, an example with For instance and a time connective with In the long run. Most importantly: with Having said that... because they avoided exaggeration and made a balanced prediction; that is a sign of mature reasoning.
Question. What are the advantages and disadvantages of people working from home?
Analysis: In an advantages-disadvantages question, structural clarity earns marks. The student clearly separated the two sides with the The main advantage is... On the other hand, the biggest drawback is... pattern (Coherence). They justified both sides with which tends to / because. With on balance... whereas, instead of giving an absolute verdict, they gave a conditional conclusion — this is a typical mark of Band 7+ reasoning.
The takeaway from the models. The common denominator of all three answers: a clear opinion, at least one because/which means, an example, a counter-angle and a balanced closing. Internalise this template; it works whatever the topic.
1. Gerekçesiz kısa cevap. "Yes, I think so." deyip susmak Part 3'te ölümcüldür. Her "evet/hayır"ı en az bir because cümlesi takip etmeli. Görevlinin "Why?" diye sormasını bekleme; kendin gerekçelendir.
2. Kişisel örnekte takılıp genelleyememek. Part 3 genel bir bölümdür. "My brother does this..." diye kendi hayatına saplanma; kişisel örneği verebilirsin ama hızla and this is true for a lot of people, because... diyerek topluma bağla.
3. Soruyu tekrar edip geçiştirmek. "Do people read less now? Well, do people read less now... yes." Soruyu aynen tekrarlamak zaman kaybıdır ve boşluk doldurma gibi görünür. Doğrudan görüşle başla.
4. Basit dile hapsolmak. Sürekli "good, bad, a lot of, I think" kullanmak Lexical Resource'u Band 6'ya çakar. Soyut ve akademik alternatifleri (beneficial, detrimental, considerable, I'd argue) bilinçli kullan.
5. "I don't know" ile bırakmak. Bilmediğin bir konu gelirse susma. Yönlendirme cümlesiyle fikir üret: "I've honestly never thought about that, but I'd imagine..." ya da "It's hard to say, but one possibility is that..." Fikir üretmeye çalışman bile puanlıdır; boşluk puansızdır.
1. A short answer with no reason. Saying "Yes, I think so." and going quiet is fatal in Part 3. Every "yes/no" must be followed by at least one because sentence. Don't wait for the examiner to ask "Why?"; justify it yourself.
2. Getting stuck on a personal example and failing to generalise. Part 3 is a general section. Don't get bogged down in your own life with "My brother does this..."; you can give a personal example, but quickly, by saying and this is true for a lot of people, because..., tie it to society.
3. Repeating the question to stall. "Do people read less now? Well, do people read less now... yes." Repeating the question word for word wastes time and looks like filler. Start straight away with your opinion.
4. Being trapped in simple language. Constantly using "good, bad, a lot of, I think" nails your Lexical Resource to Band 6. Use abstract and academic alternatives (beneficial, detrimental, considerable, I'd argue) deliberately.
5. Giving up with "I don't know". If a topic you don't know comes up, don't go quiet. Produce an idea with a steering sentence: "I've honestly never thought about that, but I'd imagine..." or "It's hard to say, but one possibility is that..." Even trying to produce an idea earns marks; silence earns none.
Part 3 pratiği yaparken ve sınav öncesi her cevabını bu listeyle tart:
Son söz. Part 3'te akıcılık kadar düşünce derinliği ölçülür. Konu hakkında "bir fikri olan ve onu savunabilen" biri gibi konuş. Her cevabı küçük bir argüman olarak kur: iddia et, gerekçelendir, örnekle, dengele, bağla.
While practising Part 3 and before the exam, weigh each of your answers against this list:
A final word. In Part 3, depth of thought is measured as much as fluency. Speak about the topic like someone "who has an opinion and can defend it". Build every answer as a little argument: assert, justify, illustrate, balance, link.
