All the English questions and model answers on this page were selected according to the band descriptors; the Turkish analyses explain criterion by criterion why each answer is Band 7+.
IELTS Speaking Part 1, sınavın ilk 4-5 dakikasıdır: ev, iş/okul, hobi, memleket, yemek ve hava gibi tanıdık konularda kısa sorular sorulur. Amaç seni tökezletmek değil, rahatlatıp doğal konuşmanı görmektir. Bu bölümde puanı belirleyen tek şey doğru cevap değil, nasıl cevap verdiğindir: cevabı 2-3 cümleye genişletmek, çeşitli kelime ve zaman kipleri kullanmak, doğal bağlaçlarla akıcı konuşmak. Bu rehberde Part 1'in 4 değerlendirme kriterini, cevap genişletme yöntemini, kelime-dilbilgisi zenginliğini, çözümlü model cevapları ve sık hataları ödünsüz kalitede işliyoruz.
IELTS Speaking Part 1 is the first 4-5 minutes of the exam: short questions are asked on familiar topics such as home, work/school, hobbies, hometown, food, and weather. The aim is not to trip you up, but to relax you and see how naturally you can speak. In this section, the only thing that determines your score is not just the correct answer, but how you answered: expanding the answer to 2-3 sentences, using a variety of vocabulary and tenses, and speaking fluently with natural connectors. In this guide, we cover the 4 assessment criteria for Part 1, methods for expanding answers, vocabulary-grammar richness, model answers with solutions, and common mistakes with uncompromising quality.
IELTS Speaking sınavı yüz yüze (veya video ile) bir görevliyle yapılan üç bölümlük bir mülakattır. Part 1 ilk bölümdür: yaklaşık 4-5 dakika sürer ve görevli sana kimliğini onayladıktan sonra günlük, tanıdık konularda kısa sorular sorar. Tipik konular: home, work or studies, hometown, hobbies, food, weather, daily routine, travel. Bu bölümün amacı seni zorlamak değil; rahat, doğal ve akıcı konuşup konuşamadığını görmektir.
En kritik nokta şudur: bu bir sohbet, bir sınav ezberi değildir. Görevli 8-12 arası soru sorar ve her sorunun net bir "doğru cevabı" yoktur. Puanı belirleyen, cevabın içeriği değil, İngilizceyi nasıl kullandığındır.
Konuşman 4 kriter üzerinden 0-9 bandında puanlanır (her kriter %25 ağırlıklı):
Band 7 için genel eşik: Duraksamalar kelime/dilbilgisi ararken değil, fikir bulurken olmalı; en az bir konuda az yaygın (less common) kelime kullanmalı; karmaşık cümle yapılarının çoğu hatasız olmalı; telaffuzun büyük çoğunluğu anlaşılır olmalı. Part 1'de bu, uzun cümleler kurmak değil, her cevabı biraz genişletip çeşitlendirmek anlamına gelir.
The IELTS Speaking exam is a three-part interview conducted face-to-face (or via video) with an examiner. Part 1 is the first section: it lasts about 4-5 minutes and after confirming your identity, the examiner asks you short questions on daily, familiar topics. Typical topics include: home, work or studies, hometown, hobbies, food, weather, daily routine, travel. The purpose of this section is not to challenge you; it is to see if you can speak comfortably, naturally, and fluently.
The most critical point is this: this is a conversation, not an exam memorization. The examiner asks between 8-12 questions, and there is no clear "correct answer" for each question. What determines your score is not the content of your answer, but how you use English.
Your speaking is scored on a scale of 0-9 based on 4 criteria (each criterion weighted at 25%):
General threshold for Band 7: Pauses should occur while finding ideas, not while searching for words/grammar; at least one less common word should be used; most complex sentence structures should be error-free; the majority of your pronunciation should be understandable. In Part 1, this means expanding and diversifying each answer a bit, not just forming long sentences.
Part 1'de puanı öldüren tek şey tek kelimelik veya tek cümlelik cevaplardır. "Do you like coffee?" sorusuna "Yes, I do." demek dilbilgisel olarak doğru ama akıcılık ve kelime dağarcığını gösteremediğin için Band 5 seviyesinde kalır. Çözüm, her cevabı basit bir formülle 2-3 cümleye çıkarmaktır. Bu formüle kısaca PREP (Point – Reason – Example) diyebiliriz.
Bu üç adım sana anında akıcılık (uzunluk), tutarlılık (bağlaçlar), kelime dağarcığı (flat white, focus) ve dilbilgisi çeşitliliği (nedensellik yapısı) kazandırır.
Doğal bağlaçlarla akışı bağla: because, so, but, although, which means, that's why, especially, for example, to be honest, actually. Bunlar cevabı yapay listeye değil, gerçek sohbete çevirir.
Ezber kalıptan kaçın. "That is a very interesting question. Well, let me think about it…" gibi ezberlenmiş girişler görevli tarafından anında fark edilir ve Fluency puanını düşürür. Cevaba doğal bir işaretle başla: "Honestly, …" veya "I'd say …" gibi. Ayrıca cevabı 4-5 cümlenin ötesine taşıma; Part 1 kısa ve akıcı cevaplar ister, Part 2 uzun konuşma bölümüdür.
The only thing that kills your score in Part 1 is one-word or one-sentence answers. Saying "Yes, I do." in response to the question "Do you like coffee?" is grammatically correct but keeps you at Band 5 level because you haven't shown fluency and vocabulary. The solution is to expand each answer to 2-3 sentences using a simple formula. We can briefly call this formula PREP (Point – Reason – Example).
These three steps give you instant fluency (length), coherence (connectors), vocabulary (flat white, focus), and grammatical variety (causal structure).
Connect the flow with natural connectors: because, so, but, although, which means, that's why, especially, for example, to be honest, actually. These turn the answer from an artificial list into a real conversation.
Avoid memorized phrases. Memorized openings like "That is a very interesting question. Well, let me think about it…" are immediately noticed by the examiner and lower your Fluency score. Start your answer with a natural signal: like "Honestly, …" or "I'd say …". Also, extend your answer beyond 4-5 sentences; Part 1 requires short and fluent answers, while Part 2 is the long speaking section.
|---|---|---|
| "I like it." | "I'm really into it because it helps me unwind." | like → am into; neden eklendi (unwind) |
| "It's good." | "It's genuinely enjoyable, especially at weekends." | good → enjoyable; detay eklendi |
| "My city is big." | "It's a sprawling city, which means there's always something going on." | big → sprawling; ilgi cümlesi |
| "I don't like it." | "It's not really my cup of tea, to be honest." | deyim + doğal ton |
| "Yes, a lot." | "Absolutely — I'd say it's one of my favourite things to do." | vurgu + üstünlük yapısı |
Dilbilgisi tarafında hedef, zaman kiplerini karıştırmaktır. Aynı cevapta geçmiş ("I used to…"), şimdi ("these days I tend to…") ve gelecek/koşul ("I'd probably…") kullanmak Grammatical Range puanını doğrudan yükseltir.
Kullanışlı ifade bankası (ezber giriş değil, esnek bağlayıcılar):
The difference between Band 6 and Band 7 is often expressing the same idea with richer vocabulary and more varied grammar. The table below compares commonly used weak answers with their strong versions: note that the idea is the same — only the vocabulary is elevated and the sentence is expanded with a connector.
| Weak answer (Band 5) | Strong answer (Band 7+) | What changed? |
|---|---|---|
| "I like it." | "I'm really into it because it helps me unwind." | like → am into; reason added (unwind) |
| "It's good." | "It's genuinely enjoyable, especially at weekends." | good → enjoyable; detail added |
| "My city is big." | "It's a sprawling city, which means there's always something going on." | big → sprawling; relative clause |
| "I don't like it." | "It's not really my cup of tea, to be honest." | idiom + natural tone |
| "Yes, a lot." | "Absolutely — I'd say it's one of my favourite things to do." | emphasis + superlative structure |
On the grammar side, the goal is to mix tenses. Using past ("I used to…"), present ("these days I tend to…"), and future/conditional ("I'd probably…") in the same answer directly boosts your Grammatical Range score.

Aşağıda üç tipik Part 1 sorusu var. Her biri için önce zayıf (Band 5) cevabı, sonra güçlü (Band 7+) model cevabı ve adım adım Türkçe analizi veriyoruz. Analizde her seçimin hangi kritere hizmet ettiğine dikkat et.
Soru. Where are you from, and do you like living there?
Zayıf (Band 5): "I am from Izmir. Yes, I like it. It is a big city and it is nice."
Analiz. (1) Genişletme & tutarlılık: Cevap üç cümleye yayılıyor ve "What appeals to me most is…", "That said…" gibi bağlaçlarla akıyor — bu Fluency & Coherence puanını yükseltir. (2) Kelime: coastal, laid-back, unbearably hot gibi az yaygın ve doğru kelimeler Lexical Resource'u Band 7'ye taşır. (3) Dilbilgisi: "which is the one thing I'd change if I could" ile koşul kipi ve ilgi cümlesi kullanılıyor — Grammatical Range için kritik. (4) Denge: Hem olumlu hem olumsuz yön verilmesi cevabı doğal ve dürüst gösterir.
Soru. What do you usually do in your free time?
Zayıf (Band 5): "In my free time I watch TV. Sometimes I meet my friends. It is good."
Analiz. (1) Doğal başlangıç: "It really depends…" ezber kalıp değil, düşünceli bir açılış — Fluency'yi güçlendirir. (2) Zaman çeşitliliği: Şimdiki alışkanlık ("I tend to…"), present perfect ("I've got into it over the past year") ve genel durum bir arada — bu Grammatical Range'in tam kalbi. (3) Kelime: unwind, get into something, can't imagine … without it deyimsel ifadeler Lexical Resource'u yükseltir. (4) Genişletme: Sadece "ne" değil, "ne zaman" ve "neden" de eklenmiş — konu doğal biçimde derinleşiyor.
Soru. Do you prefer eating at home or eating out?
Zayıf (Band 5): "I prefer eating at home. It is cheap. Restaurants are expensive."
Analiz. (1) Dengeli yapı: "a bit of both, though I lean towards…" tek yönlü değil nüanslı bir cevap sunar; bu ileri düzey konuşmacının işaretidir. (2) Karmaşık dilbilgisi: "not only … but also …" ve "since I know exactly what goes into my meals" ile bağımlı cümleler hatasız kuruluyor — Grammatical Accuracy. (3) Kelime: lean towards, the occasional treat, every now and then az yaygın öbekler Lexical Resource'u Band 7+ yapar. (4) Bağlaç: "Having said that…" ile zıt fikir pürüzsüz bağlanıyor — Coherence.
Below are three typical Part 1 questions. For each, we first provide a weak (Band 5) answer, then a strong (Band 7+) model answer, and a step-by-step English analysis. Pay attention to how each choice serves which criterion in the analysis.
Question. Where are you from, and do you like living there?
Weak (Band 5): "I am from Izmir. Yes, I like it. It is a big city and it is nice."
Analysis. (1) Expansion & coherence: The answer is spread over three sentences and flows with connectors like "What appeals to me most is…", "That said…" — this boosts the Fluency & Coherence score. (2) Vocabulary: Words like coastal, laid-back, unbearably hot are less common and precise, elevating the Lexical Resource to Band 7. (3) Grammar: The use of "which is the one thing I'd change if I could" employs conditional and relative clauses — critical for Grammatical Range. (4) Balance: Providing both positive and negative aspects makes the answer appear natural and honest.
Question. What do you usually do in your free time?
Weak (Band 5): "In my free time I watch TV. Sometimes I meet my friends. It is good."
Analysis. (1) Natural start: "It really depends…" is not a memorized phrase, but a thoughtful opening — it strengthens Fluency. (2) Variety of tenses: Present habit ("I tend to…"), present perfect ("I've got into it over the past year"), and general state together — this is at the heart of Grammatical Range. (3) Vocabulary: Idiomatic expressions like unwind, get into something, can't imagine … without it elevate the Lexical Resource. (4) Expansion: Not just "what" but also "when" and "why" are added — the topic deepens naturally.
Question. Do you prefer eating at home or eating out?
Weak (Band 5): "I prefer eating at home. It is cheap. Restaurants are expensive."
Analysis. (1) Balanced structure: "a bit of both, though I lean towards…" offers a nuanced answer, not just one-sided; this is a sign of an advanced speaker. (2) Complex grammar: "not only … but also …" and "since I know exactly what goes into my meals" use dependent clauses without error — Grammatical Accuracy. (3) Vocabulary: Phrases like lean towards, the occasional treat, every now and then are less common phrases that make the Lexical Resource Band 7+. (4) Connector: "Having said that…" smoothly connects contrasting ideas — Coherence.
