Sorular İngilizce; strateji ve çözümler Türkçe anlatılıyor.
Questions are in English; strategies and solutions are explained in Turkish.
Multiple choice (MCQ) and short answer questions are the two most common question types in the IELTS Academic Reading. At the heart of both lies a single skill: recognizing paraphrases. The correct option is a rephrased version of a sentence in the passage; distractor options carry words from the passage but do not actually answer the question. On this page, you will see the entire process from reading the question without looking at the options, to finding evidence in the passage and eliminating distractors, as well as the word limit rules, types of distractors, and a step-by-step solved academic example.
Örneğin pasajdaki "sales rose sharply", doğru şıkta "a significant increase" olarak karşına çıkar.
Multiple Choice. You are given a question or an incomplete sentence; you are usually asked to choose one of 4 options (A–D). In some tasks, you may need to choose 2 out of 5 options or 3 out of 7 options; in this case, pay attention to the number in the question stem ("Choose TWO letters").
Short Answer. You answer a question based on the passage, using words taken directly from the passage. The answer can be a word, a number, or a short phrase, and there is always a word limit: "NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER".
Common logic: paraphrase. In both types, the information in the passage is expressed in different words in the question or the correct option. For example, "sales rose sharply" in the passage may appear as "a significant increase" in the correct option. Your task is to look for the same meaning, not the same word.
Another common feature: questions follow the order of the passage. This means that the answer to question 2 comes after the answer to question 1; the answer to question 3 comes after question 2. This is a strong clue that speeds up your scanning of the correct area.
Doğru sırayla ilerlemek, hem hızını hem doğruluğunu artırır. Şu beş adımı otomatikleştir:
Short Answer için ek adım. Cevabı pasajdan birebir al, kendi kelimenle yeniden yazma. Ardından kelime sınırını say: sınır "üç kelime" ise dört kelimelik yanıt — doğru anlamı taşısa bile — yanlış sayılır. Tireli kelimeler (ör. "well-being") tek kelime, sayılar (ör. "1990") genellikle bir birim sayılır.
Progressing in the correct order increases both your speed and accuracy. Automate these five steps:
Additional step for Short Answer. Take the answer directly from the passage without rephrasing it in your own words. Then count the word limit: if the limit is "three words," a four-word answer — even if it carries the correct meaning — is considered wrong. Hyphenated words (e.g., "well-being") count as one word, and numbers (e.g., "1990") usually count as one unit.
IELTS çeldiricileri rastgele değildir; sınav yazarları belirli tuzak kalıplarını tekrar tekrar kullanır. Bu kalıpları tanırsan, yanlış şıkları saniyeler içinde eleyebilirsin.
| Çeldirici türü | Nasıl tanınır | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Kelime tuzağı (word matching) | Pasajdaki kelimeleri aynen taşır, ama soruyu yanıtlamaz veya bağlamı çarpıtır. Göz "tanıdık kelime"ye atlar. | Pasaj: "The study was funded by a university, not the government." Çeldirici: "The government funded the study." Kelimeler aynı, anlam ters. |
| Aşırı genelleme (overstatement) | all, always, never, only, every, none gibi mutlak sözcükler içerir. Pasaj ise "bazen / genellikle / çoğu" der. | Pasaj: "Some species adapted quickly." Çeldirici: "All species adapted quickly." "All" pasajı aşar. |
| Kısmen doğru (half-right) | Cümlenin ilk yarısı pasajla uyumlu, ikinci yarısı yanlış. En tehlikeli türdür çünkü kulağa doğru gelir. | Pasaj: "The bridge was cheap but slow to build." Çeldirici: "The bridge was cheap and quick to build." İlk yarı doğru, ikinci yarı yanlış. |
| Bahsedilmemiş bilgi (not given) | Mantıklı ve doğru görünür, ancak pasajda dayanağı yoktur. Kendi genel bilgin seni kandırır. | Pasaj konudan bahseder ama şıktaki iddiayı hiç söylemez; "olabilir" diye seçme. |
IELTS distractors are not random; exam writers repeatedly use specific trap patterns. If you recognize these patterns, you can eliminate wrong options in seconds.
| Type of distractor | How to recognize it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Word trap (word matching) | It carries the words from the passage exactly, but does not answer the question or distorts the context. The eye jumps to the "familiar word". | Passage: "The study was funded by a university, not the government." Distractor: "The government funded the study." The words are the same, but the meaning is opposite. |
| Overgeneralization (overstatement) | Contains absolute words like all, always, never, only, every, none. The passage says "sometimes / usually / most". | Passage: "Some species adapted quickly." Distractor: "All species adapted quickly." "All" exceeds the passage. |
| Partially correct (half-right) | The first half of the sentence aligns with the passage, while the second half is incorrect. This is the most dangerous type because it sounds correct. | Passage: "The bridge was cheap but slow to build." Distractor: "The bridge was cheap and quick to build." The first half is correct, the second half is incorrect. |
| Not given information (not given) | It seems logical and correct, but has no basis in the passage. Your general knowledge can mislead you. | The passage discusses the topic but does not mention the claim in the option; choose it as "possible". |
Golden rule: The correct option always depends on a sentence in the passage and reflects that sentence exactly. If you cannot point to the basis in the passage, that option is likely a distractor.

The honeybee's waggle dance has long fascinated biologists. When a foraging bee discovers a rich source of nectar, it returns to the hive and performs a figure-eight movement on the vertical honeycomb. The angle of the dance relative to gravity encodes the direction of the food in relation to the sun, while the duration of the waggle phase signals how far away it lies. Remarkably, bees adjust this information as the sun moves across the sky, so the message stays accurate throughout the day. Early researchers doubted that such a small brain could convey abstract data, and some argued the bees were simply following scent trails. Later experiments, in which scented food was hidden, confirmed that recruits still located the source using the dance alone, settling the debate in favour of symbolic communication.
1. What does the duration of the waggle phase indicate?
2. Why did some early researchers doubt the dance theory?
3. What finally resolved the debate about bee communication?
4. Complete the sentence with NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from the passage.
The bees update the directional message as the ____________ changes position in the sky.
Read the following short academic passage, then solve three multiple choice and one short answer question. In each solution, you will first see the correct answer, then the passage evidence, and why the distractors are incorrect.

Şıktaki her iddiayı pasajdaki cümleyle karşılaştır.
Recognizing the word and jumping to the option. An option may seem correct because it carries a word from the passage, but the same word is often a trap. Look for meaning matching, not word matching. Compare each claim in the option with the sentence in the passage.
Reading the options first and forming bias. If you read the options before the question stem, three wrong possibilities settle in your mind, and you read the passage to "confirm" them. First, understand the question, generate the answer from the passage, then return to the options.
Exceeding the word limit in Short Answer. Even if the meaning is correct, writing four words when the limit is "three words" scores zero points. Eliminate unnecessary articles and prepositions, provide the answer in the shortest correct form, and always use the words from the passage — do not write your synonyms.
Falling for the "partially correct" option. It is a common mistake to think the entire option is correct because the first half aligns with the passage. Every part of the sentence must have a counterpart in the passage; even a single incorrect word is enough to eliminate the option.
