Matching Headings is one of the question types that can cause the most score loss in IELTS Academic Reading. You are given a list of headings (i, ii, iii...) and asked to match each paragraph's (A, B, C...) main idea with the heading that best summarizes it. The number of headings is always greater than the number of paragraphs; these "extra" headings are intentionally placed distractors. On this page, we will repeatedly emphasize a single principle: heading = the main idea of the paragraph, not a detail. You will confidently solve this type step by step with a strategy, the distinction between main idea/detail, a fully worked example, and a quick pre-push checklist.
Matching Headings sorusunda pasajın paragrafları A, B, C... diye etiketlenir.
"i" başlığının A paragrafına ait olması gibi bir kural yoktur; rakamlar rastgele dağıtılmıştır.
In the Matching Headings question, the paragraphs of the passage are labeled as A, B, C.... You are also given a list of headings numbered with Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv...). Your task is to match each paragraph with the heading that best summarizes the content of that paragraph.
This question type has two immutable rules, and the entire strategy is built on these two rules:
Why is it difficult? Because this question is not solved by "word matching". Marking immediately when you see a word from the paragraph in the heading is exactly the mistake the test makers expect. The correct heading summarizes what the entire paragraph conveys, not just a detail mentioned in a single sentence.
Also note: the order of the heading list does not follow the order of the paragraphs. There is no rule that the heading "i" belongs to paragraph A; the numbers are distributed randomly. In some exams, an example solved paragraph (Example) is given at the beginning of the passage; that heading is now out of the pool, do not assign it to another paragraph.
Finally, this question type usually comes at the very beginning of the passage; that is, you are expected to extract the main idea of the paragraphs without reading the entire text in detail yet. Therefore, the skill of "skimming" (reading quickly to capture the general idea of the paragraph) is critical; if you try to read word for word, you won't have enough time.
Panik yapıp paragrafla başlıkları rastgele karşılaştırmak yerine sabit bir akış izle. Bu akış hem hızını hem doğruluğunu artırır.
Zaman yönetimi: Bir Matching Headings setine (5-7 paragraf) yaklaşık 8-10 dakikadan fazla harcama. Takıldığın paragrafta ısrar etmek, tüm Reading bölümünün zamanını yer. Ele-ve-devam et prensibi burada altındır.
Instead of panicking and randomly comparing paragraphs with headings, follow a fixed flow. This flow will increase both your speed and accuracy.
Time management: Do not spend more than about 8-10 minutes on a Matching Headings set (5-7 paragraphs). Insisting on a paragraph you are stuck on wastes the time for the entire Reading section. The principle of eliminate-and-move-on is key here.
This type hinges on a single distinction: the difference between main idea and detail. To find the main idea of the paragraph, look in three places:
Distractor headings focus precisely on these details. They accurately capture a word or small fact that actually appears in the paragraph, but they do not represent the whole paragraph. This is why they can feel correct.
| Main idea heading (correct) | Detail trap heading (distractor) |
|---|---|
| Encompasses the entire paragraph | Covers only one sentence in the paragraph |
| Fits your sentence "This paragraph mainly discusses" | Is correct information but not the purpose of the paragraph |
| Uses a general/inclusive expression | Is locked into a specific name, number, or example |
| Even if the words do not match exactly, the meaning overlaps (paraphrase) | Looks attractive because it repeats a word from the paragraph exactly |
The answer to the question "What is the author trying to prove/explain throughout the paragraph?".
The answer to the question "Did this information appear in the paragraph?" — but just because it appears does not mean it is the correct heading.
Another powerful technique: while reading the paragraph, capture the author's attitude and purpose. Is the author defining, comparing, presenting a problem, advocating a solution, or narrating a development? The correct heading often reflects this "function". For example, if the paragraph lists the causes of a problem, a heading saying "results" or "solution" — even if those words appear in the content — is incorrect. The verb/focus of the heading must align with the function of the paragraph.
A. When the first public libraries opened in the nineteenth century, many observers doubted they would survive. Yet within a few decades they had become fixtures of civic life, funded by local taxes and defended by citizens who saw free access to books as a public right. What began as a fragile experiment had, almost unnoticed, hardened into an institution few were willing to give up.
B. Modern libraries, however, do far more than lend books. A typical branch now hosts language classes, job-search workshops, children's story hours and free internet access for those who have none at home. For many visitors, the shelves are almost secondary; it is the building itself — warm, safe and open to all — that draws them through the door.
C. This broader role has not come cheaply. As budgets tighten, councils increasingly ask whether such services can be justified, and some branches have been forced to reduce their hours or close altogether. Supporters warn that every closure falls hardest on precisely those residents — the poor, the elderly, the newly arrived — who have nowhere else to turn.
i. The rise of the internet as a rival to books
ii. From a doubtful start to a lasting institution
iii. A meeting place that offers more than reading
iv. The threat posed by shrinking funding
v. How book-lending fees were first introduced
Below are three short academic paragraphs (A, B, C) and a list of five headings. Two of the five headings are distractors (not to be used). First, try it yourself, then read the solution.

i. The rise of the internet as a rival to books
ii. From a doubtful start to a lasting institution
iii. A meeting place that offers more than reading
iv. The threat posed by shrinking funding
v. How book-lending fees were first introduced
Solutions:
Lesson: In all three paragraphs, a word hunt would have led you to the wrong answer (in "v" it says "funded", in "i" it says "internet"). The correct answer was only reached by asking the question "What is this paragraph mainly about?".
1. Matching based on the word in the first sentence. The first sentence is often the topic sentence, but not always. Some paragraphs open with an example or a counterargument and present the main idea in the middle/end. Reflexively marking when you see a word in the first sentence in the heading; do not decide without considering the entire paragraph.
2. Falling into the detail trap. The most frequently lost points are here. A heading that captures a name, date, number, or a single fact mentioned in the paragraph may be correct information but may not be the correct heading. Ask yourself: does this heading summarize a sentence of the paragraph or the whole?
3. Hunting for headings without reading the paragraph. Searching for words from the heading in the paragraph like "Ctrl+F" is the most dangerous habit in this question type. The test makers sprinkle the word in the heading into a distractor paragraph precisely to punish this behavior. First, establish the meaning, then match.
4. Looking for exact word matches. The correct heading almost never uses the words from the paragraph exactly; it uses paraphrase (synonymous rephrasing). Words that repeat exactly are often bait for distractors. Prefer meaning overlap to word overlap.
5. Getting stuck on a paragraph and wasting time. Insisting on an ambiguous paragraph instead of leaving it for last risks both that question and the following ones. Mark the clear ones, narrow down the list, and leave the difficult ones for last.
Bol pratik, Band 7+ Reading'in anahtarıdır.
Final word: Matching Headings is a reading comprehension test, not a word-finding test. If you ask the question "What is this paragraph mainly about?" in each paragraph, most distractors will dissolve on their own. Plenty of practice is the key to achieving Band 7+ in Reading.
