In IELTS Academic Reading, matching questions — Matching Information, Matching Features, and Matching Sentence Endings — are the types that most candidates struggle with the most. The reason is simple: these questions do not follow the order of the passage. This means that the answers do not progress in a regular manner from the beginning to the end of the text; you need to scan the entire passage to find a piece of information. On this page, we address the differences between the three types, step-by-step solution strategies, scanning techniques, and grammar filters with solved examples. Goal: to quickly and confidently find the correct paraphrase match.
IELTS Reading'de “eşleştirme” başlığı altında görünen ama birbirinden farklı çalışan üç soru tipi vardır. Hepsinin ortak yanı: cevaplar pasajın sırasını takip etmez. Bu yüzden “soru 1'in cevabı başta, soru 2 biraz aşağıda” mantığı burada işlemez. Her tipte tarama yapmanız gerekir.
Size bir bilgi verilir — bir örnek, bir sebep, bir tanım, bir karşılaştırma — ve bu bilginin hangi paragrafta (A, B, C...) geçtiğini bulmanız istenir. En kritik nokta: paragraf harfleri tekrar kullanılabilir ve bazı paragraflar hiç kullanılmayabilir. Soru talimatında “You may use any letter more than once” yazıyorsa bunu unutmayın.
Neden zor? Üç tip de “benzer kelimeyi bul, işaretle” şeklinde çözülmez. IELTS kasıtlı olarak pasajda eş anlamlı ifadeler (paraphrase) kullanır; sorudaki kelime pasajda aynen geçmez. Beceri: kelimeyi değil, anlamı eşleştirmektir.
In IELTS Reading, there are three types of questions that appear under the “matching” heading but work differently from each other. Their common feature is: the answers do not follow the order of the passage. Therefore, the logic of “the answer to question 1 is at the beginning, the answer to question 2 is a bit below” does not apply here. You need to scan for each type.
You are given a piece of information — an example, a reason, a definition, a comparison — and you are asked to find which paragraph (A, B, C...) contains this information. The most critical point: paragraph letters can be reused and some paragraphs may not be used at all. If the question instruction says “You may use any letter more than once”, do not forget this.
You match a series of statements (finding, opinion, feature) with a numbered/lettered list. Typical list: researcher names, countries, theories, periods. For example, “Which researcher presented this finding?” or “Which country does this feature belong to?” In this type, list items may sometimes be reused, sometimes not — read the instructions.
Half sentences (sentence beginnings) are given; you choose the correct end from the options to complete the sentence. The number of options exceeds the number of questions (there are extra “distractor” options). This type requires two filters: first grammar (the sentence must flow grammatically when combined), then meaning (correct information according to the passage).
Why is it difficult? None of the three types can be solved by “finding the similar word and marking it.” IELTS intentionally uses synonymous expressions (paraphrase) in the passage; the word in the question does not appear exactly in the passage. The skill is to match the meaning, not the word.
Sıralı gitmeyen bu sorularda panik yapmamanın yolu sistemli bir yöntemdir. Aşağıdaki adımları her eşleştirme grubunda uygulayın.
The way to avoid panic in these non-sequential questions is to have a systematic method. Apply the following steps in each matching group.
Scanning is quickly moving your eyes across the page while locking onto a specific target (name, number, term) without reading the text from start to finish. It is the most efficient reading method for matching questions — since the order is free. Fixed names and numbers are the best anchors; because they cannot be paraphrased (1987 is always 1987).
The table below summarizes the approach and the most common traps for the three types:
| Type | Approach | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| Matching Information | Identify the type of information in the question (is it an example, reason, definition?); scan paragraph by paragraph for that type. | Looking at the common word and choosing the wrong paragraph; forgetting that letters can be reused. |
| Matching Features | Anchor the list items (name/country); match the finding/feature next to that item in the passage. | Mixing up the opinions of two researchers; thinking the opinion “rejected by someone else” belongs to that researcher. |
| Sentence Endings | Read the sentence beginning, find the relevant part in the passage; then apply the grammar + meaning double filter. | Choosing an ending that disrupts the grammar by only looking at the meaning; forcing the use of an extra (distractor) option. |
In this type, two tests must be passed at the same time:
Options exceed the number of questions. Forcing the use of these extra options to “not leave them unused” is the most common mistake. An option may not be used at all — this is normal.
Aşağıda A-D paragraflı kısa bir akademik pasaj var. Önce Matching Information (3 soru), sonra Sentence Endings (2 soru) örneğini adım adım çözeceğiz.
A. The domestication of the honeybee began thousands of years ago, but modern beekeeping was transformed in 1851 when Lorenzo Langstroth designed a hive with movable frames. This allowed keepers to inspect colonies without destroying the comb, a breakthrough that remains the basis of commercial hives today.
B. Bees communicate the location of food through a “waggle dance”. The duration and angle of the dance encode distance and direction, enabling a single forager to direct hundreds of others to a flower patch several kilometres away.
C. In recent decades, populations have fallen sharply. Researchers link this decline to a combination of pesticides, habitat loss and parasitic mites. No single factor explains the collapse; rather, the stresses appear to reinforce one another.
D. Because roughly a third of the food we eat depends on pollinators, the economic value of bees is enormous. Some farmers now rent hives during flowering season, transporting colonies across entire countries to pollinate crops.
Which paragraph contains the following information? (You may use any letter more than once.)
1. a reference to how bees share the position of food
2. a statement that no single cause is responsible for a problem
3. an example of bees being moved from place to place
Complete each sentence with the correct ending, A–D below.
4. Langstroth's 1851 hive was important because it
5. The waggle dance is remarkable because it
A. destroyed the comb during every inspection.
B. let beekeepers examine colonies without damaging them.
C. can guide many bees to a distant food source.
D. was invented only in recent decades.

1. Ortak kelimeye göre eşlemek. Sorudaki bir kelime pasajda aynen geçiyor diye o paragrafı/seçeneği seçmek en sık hata. IELTS bu kelimeyi bilerek yanlış paragrafa da serpiştirir. Kelime değil, bilginin tamamı uymalı.
2. Sentence Endings'te dilbilgisini atlamak. Sadece anlama bakıp gramer olarak cümleyi bozan sonu seçmek. Doğru cevap hem anlamı hem yapıyı sağlar; birleşince akmayan seçeneği hemen eleyin.
3. Tekrar kullanımını unutmak. Matching Information/Features'ta “bu harfi zaten kullandım” diyerek doğru cevabı elemek. Talimat “more than once” diyorsa aynı harf birkaç kez doğru olabilir.
4. Fazlalık seçeneği zorla kullanmak. Sentence Endings ve bazı Features sorularında seçenek sayısı fazladır. “Boşta kalmasın” diye yanlış eşleme yapmayın — bir seçenek hiç kullanılmayabilir.
5. Zor soruya takılıp zaman kaybetmek. Sıra serbest olduğu için bir çıpayı bulamazsanız o soruyu atlayıp diğerlerini çözün. Metni tarayıp diğer cevapları bulduğunuzda, geriye kalan paragraf/seçenek doğru adayınızı daraltır.
1. Matching based on common words. Choosing that paragraph/option just because a word in the question appears exactly in the passage is the most common mistake. IELTS deliberately sprinkles this word into the wrong paragraph. It should match the entire information, not just the word.
2. Skipping grammar in Sentence Endings. Choosing an ending that disrupts the grammar by only looking at the meaning. The correct answer provides both meaning and structure; immediately eliminate the option that does not flow when combined.
3. Forgetting about reuse. Eliminating the correct answer by saying “I already used this letter” in Matching Information/Features. If the instruction says “more than once”, the same letter can be correct several times.
4. Forcing the use of extra options. In Sentence Endings and some Features questions, the number of options is high. Do not make incorrect matches just to “not leave them unused” — an option may not be used at all.
5. Getting stuck on a difficult question and wasting time. Since the order is free, if you cannot find an anchor, skip that question and solve the others. When you scan the text and find the other answers, the remaining paragraph/option will narrow down your correct candidate.
