Diyagram / Akış Şeması Etiketleme (Diagram & Flow-chart Labelling), IELTS Academic Reading'de bir süreç veya yapı anlatan görselin boş etiketlerini pasajdaki kelimelerle doldurmanı ister. Görsel genellikle bir üretim/doğa sürecini (su arıtma, kâğıt üretimi, fotosentez) ya da bir cihazın/yapının bölümlerini gösterir.
Diagram / Flow-chart Labelling asks you to fill in the blank labels of a visual describing a process or structure with words from the passage in IELTS Academic Reading. The visual typically shows a production/natural process (water purification, paper production, photosynthesis) or the parts of a device/structure.
Talimatta belirtilen kelime sınırına (çoğunlukla ONE WORD veya NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS) uymak zorunludur.
Diagram / Flow-chart Labelling gives you a visual and asks you to fill in the numbered blanks with words from the passage. The visual is one of two types:
In both types, the answers are taken directly from the passage. You cannot write in your own words, nor can you use synonyms; you copy the word exactly from the text. It is mandatory to comply with the word limit specified in the instructions (usually ONE WORD or NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS).
Important difference: This question type is almost always based on a single process/structure paragraph. This means you will find all the answers in a specific section of the passage, and most of the time in the order of the diagram. Therefore, you do not need to scan the entire passage; once you find the correct paragraph, the job is largely done.
This question type combines reading the visual with reading the text: you need to match both the logic of the visual/structure and the language of the text.
Why does it earn points? Diagram labelling is concrete, unlike abstract types such as True/False/Not Given or Matching Headings: the answer is written verbatim in the passage, does not require inference, and progresses sequentially. Therefore, it is a reliable source of points even under time pressure. The only place where students usually lose points is by misaligning the visual with the text or skipping the word limit — which is exactly what this page aims to eliminate.
Where do you encounter it? It is frequently seen in passages of IELTS Academic Reading, especially on topics related to science, technology, and nature: such as the operation of a power plant, the life cycle of an animal, a material's production line, or the functioning of an organ. It is rarer in the General Training module, but you will encounter a variant of it in almost every Academic test.
Aşağıdaki sırayı takip edersen hem hız kazanır hem de kelime-sınırı hatalarından kurtulursun.
Zaman ipucu: Boşlukların diyagramda numaralanış sırası, pasajdaki geçiş sırasıyla neredeyse her zaman aynıdır. Bir cevabı bulduğun cümleden sonrasını okumaya devam et; bir sonraki cevap büyük ihtimalle hemen ardından gelir.
If you follow the order below, you will gain speed and avoid word limit errors.
Time tip: The numbering order of the blanks in the diagram almost always matches the order of transitions in the passage. Continue reading from the sentence where you found one answer; the next answer will likely come immediately after.
Diyagramdaki her adım/etiket, pasajda genellikle bir fiil öbeği ile ifade edilir. İşin özü, görseldeki kutuyu metindeki eylemle eşleştirmektir. Aşağıdaki tablo, sık görülen süreç ifadelerinin diyagram adımına nasıl karşılık geldiğini gösterir.
| Pasajdaki süreç ifadesi (process expression) | Diyagram adımı olarak anlamı |
|---|---|
| is heated / is warmed | Isıtma aşaması (girdinin sıcaklığının yükseltildiği kutu) |
| passes through / flows into | Bir sonraki bölüme geçiş / aktarım oku |
| is filtered / is passed through a filter | Filtreleme / süzme aşaması |
| is collected / is gathered | Toplama aşaması (ürünün biriktirildiği kutu) |
| is stored / is held in a tank | Depolama aşaması |
| is removed / is separated | Ayrıştırma / atık uzaklaştırma aşaması |
| is converted into / turns into | Dönüşüm aşaması (bir maddenin başka bir maddeye dönüştüğü kutu) |
Bu ifadeleri tanımak, doğru boşluğu doğru cümleyle eşlemeni sağlar. Örneğin diyagramda bir kutudan diğerine giden ok görürsen, pasajda passes through veya flows into ifadesini ararsın.
Sıra sözcüklerinin rolü. Akış şemasındaki oklar, pasajda çoğu zaman zaman/sıra bağlaçlarıyla temsil edilir. Bunlar adımların hangi sırayla geldiğini kesinleştirir:
Püf noktası: Edilgen çatı (passive voice: is heated, is collected) süreç anlatımının imzasıdır. Pasajda edilgen fiillerin yoğunlaştığı paragraf, neredeyse kesin olarak diyagramın kaynağıdır.
Adlandırma kalıbına dikkat et. Süreç pasajları çoğu zaman bir aşamayı önce tarif eder, sonra ona bir isim verir. Bu kalıbı tanımak, tek kelimelik terim cevaplarını hızlıca yakalamanı sağlar:
Diyagramda bir kutunun altında boş bir etiket görürsen ve pasajda is known as / called / referred to as ifadeleri geçiyorsa, aradığın terim büyük olasılıkla hemen o ifadenin ardındaki kelimedir.
Each step/label in the diagram is usually expressed in the passage with a verb phrase. The essence is to match the box in the visual with the action in the text. The table below shows how commonly seen process expressions correspond to the diagram step.
| Process expression in the passage (process expression) | Meaning as a diagram step |
|---|---|
| is heated / is warmed | Heating stage (the box where the input's temperature is raised) |
| passes through / flows into | Transition to the next section / flow arrow |
| is filtered / is passed through a filter | Filtering stage |
| is collected / is gathered | Collection stage (the box where the product is accumulated) |
| is stored / is held in a tank | Storage stage |
| is removed / is separated | Separation / waste removal stage |
| is converted into / turns into | Conversion stage (the box where one substance is converted into another) |
Recognizing these expressions allows you to match the correct blank with the correct sentence. For example, if you see an arrow going from one box to another in the diagram, you will look for the expression passes through or flows into in the passage.
The role of sequence words. The arrows in the flow chart are often represented in the passage with time/sequence conjunctions. These clarify the order in which the steps come:
Tip: The passive voice (passive voice: is heated, is collected) is the signature of process narration. The paragraph in the passage where passive verbs are concentrated is almost certainly the source of the diagram.
Pay attention to the naming pattern. Process passages often describe a stage first and then give it a name. Recognizing this pattern allows you to quickly catch one-word term answers:
If you see a blank label under a box in the diagram and the passage contains expressions like is known as / called / referred to as, the term you are looking for is likely the word immediately following that expression.
Aşağıda bir su arıtma sürecini anlatan akademik bir pasaj parçası ve buna dayalı bir akış şeması var. Önce pasajı, sonra şemayı, en sonda da adım adım çözümü oku.
Pasaj.
In a modern treatment plant, raw water from the river is first pumped into a large tank, where it is left to stand so that heavy particles settle to the bottom. This initial stage is known as sedimentation. The clearer water above is then passed through a bed of fine sand, which traps the smaller impurities that remain; this process is called filtration. After the water has been filtered, a small amount of chlorine is added to kill any harmful bacteria — a step engineers refer to as disinfection. The purified water is finally collected in a covered reservoir before it is distributed to homes through underground pipes.
Akış şeması (boşlukları doldur — ONE WORD ONLY):
Raw water pumped into tank → Stage 1: heavy particles settle (this stage = 1 ________) → Stage 2: water passes through 2 ________ to trap impurities (= filtration) → Stage 3: 3 ________ is added to kill bacteria (= disinfection) → Stage 4: purified water 4 ________ in a covered reservoir → distributed to homes
Çözüm. Diyagram bir süreç anlatıyor ve boşluklar pasajdaki sırayla ilerliyor. Talimat ONE WORD ONLY dediği için her cevap tek kelime olmalı.
Dikkat: 2. boşlukta akış yönü ve kelime sınırı birlikte çalışır. Metinde fine sand geçse de ONE WORD ONLY kuralı yalnızca sand yazmanı gerektirir. Sıra bağlaçları (first, then, after, finally) ise dört cevabın doğru adımlara oturmasını sağladı.
Below is an academic passage describing a water purification process and a flowchart based on it. First, read the passage, then the chart, and finally the step-by-step solution.
Passage.
Flowchart (fill in the blanks — ONE WORD ONLY):
Raw water pumped into tank → Stage 1: heavy particles settle (this stage = 1 ________) → Stage 2: water passes through 2 ________ to trap impurities (= filtration) → Stage 3: 3 ________ is added to kill bacteria (= disinfection) → Stage 4: purified water 4 ________ in a covered reservoir → distributed to homes
Solution. The diagram describes a process, and the blanks progress in the order of the passage. Since the instruction says ONE WORD ONLY, each answer must be a single word.
Note: In the second blank, the flow direction and word limit work together. Although fine sand appears in the text, the ONE WORD ONLY rule requires you to write only sand. The sequence conjunctions (first, then, after, finally) ensured that the four answers fit the correct steps.
1. Akış yönünü karıştırmak. Bir sonraki adımın kelimesini bir önceki boşluğa yazmak en yaygın hatadır. Okun yönünü ve sıra bağlaçlarını (then, after that, finally) mutlaka takip et. Diyagramdaki numara sırası ile pasajdaki cümle sırası genelde birebir örtüşür.
2. Kelime sınırını aşmak. ONE WORD ONLY denmişken fine sand yazmak; TWO WORDS sınırında üç kelime yazmak cevabı geçersiz kılar. Cevabı yazdıktan sonra kelimeleri tek tek say. Tireli kelimeler (well-known) tek kelime sayılır; ayrı yazılanlar ayrı sayılır.
3. Kelimeyi değiştirmek / eş anlamlı yazmak. Pasajda chlorine geçiyorsa chemical ya da kendi kelimenle yazamazsın. Cevap pasajdaki kelimeyle birebir aynı olmalı. Ayrıca yazım hatası yapma; yanlış yazılmış doğru kelime puan getirmez.
4. Verilen etiket kelimelerini görmezden gelmek. Diyagramda zaten yazılı olan kelimeler (örn. filtration, disinfection) pasajdaki yerini bulmanı sağlayan pusuladır. Onları atlarsan yanlış paragrafta zaman kaybedersin.
5. Dilbilgisi uyumunu ihmal etmek. Boşluk isim mi, fiil mi istiyor? Tekil mi çoğul mu? “is added” yapısı isim; “water is ________” yapısı çoğu zaman fiil (geçmiş ortaç) ister. Uyumsuz kelime yanlış cevabın işaretidir.
1. Mixing up the flow direction. Writing the word for the next step in the previous blank is the most common mistake. Always follow the direction of the arrows and the sequence conjunctions (then, after that, finally). The numbering order in the diagram usually overlaps with the sentence order in the passage.
2. Exceeding the word limit. Writing fine sand when it says ONE WORD ONLY; writing three words when the limit is TWO WORDS invalidates the answer. After writing the answer, count the words one by one. Hyphenated words (well-known) count as one word; separate words count separately.
3. Changing the word / writing a synonym. If chlorine appears in the passage, you cannot write chemical or your own word. The answer must be exactly the same as the word in the passage. Also, do not make spelling mistakes; a misspelled correct word does not earn points.
4. Ignoring the given label words. The words already written in the diagram (e.g., filtration, disinfection) are the compass that helps you find their place in the passage. If you skip them, you will waste time in the wrong paragraph.
5. Neglecting grammatical agreement. Does the blank require a noun or a verb? Singular or plural? The structure “is added” requires a noun; the structure “water is ________” often requires a verb (past participle). An incompatible word is a sign of an incorrect answer.
Son söz: Diyagram etiketleme, IELTS Reading'de en çok puan kazandıran tiplerden biridir; çünkü cevap metinde birebir vardır ve sıra bellidir. Akış yönünü izle, kelimeyi aynen al, sınırı say — üçünü birden yaparsan bu bölümü kaybetmezsin.
Final word: Diagram labelling is one of the most rewarding types in IELTS Reading; because the answer is verbatim in the text and the order is clear. Follow the flow direction, take the word exactly, count the limit — if you do all three, you won’t lose points in this section.
