Çoktan seçmeli (Multiple Choice) ve eşleştirme (Matching) soruları IELTS Listening'in en çok puan kaybettiren bölümüdür; çünkü doğru cevabı bulmak değil, doğru cevaba benzeyen tuzağı elemek gerekir. Şıklar sesin birebir tekrarı değil, paraphrase'idir; üstelik konuşmacı çoğu zaman önce yanlış bir seçeneği söyler, sonra but, actually, however gibi bir dönüşle onu düzeltir. Bu sayfada şıkları ses başlamadan okumayı, kelime yerine anlamı beklemeyi ve konuşmacının son kararını yakalamayı adım adım öğreneceksin.
Multiple Choice and Matching questions are the part of IELTS Listening that loses the most marks; because the task is not to find the right answer but to eliminate the trap that resembles the right answer. The options are not an exact echo of the audio but a paraphrase; moreover, the speaker often states a wrong option first, then corrects it with a turn like but, actually, however. On this page you will learn step by step to read the options before the audio starts, to wait for the meaning rather than the word, and to catch the speaker’s final decision.
Konuşmacı "the library closes early on Fridays" derken doğru şık "reduced opening hours at the end of the week" biçiminde paraphrase edilmiş olur.
"I was going to take the morning class, but I switched to the evening one" cümlesinde "morning" bir tuzaktır; doğru cevap "evening"dir. Bu iki soru tipini çözmek, aslında bu fikir-değiştirme anlarını yakalamayı öğrenmektir.
Neden bu kadar zor? Boşluk doldurma (form/note completion) sorularında sadece bir kelimeyi yakalarsın; ama çoktan seçmelide üç-dört olasılığı aynı anda kafanda tutup kayıt ilerlerken hepsini test etmen gerekir. Bu, dinleme yükünü ikiye katlar. Üstelik konuşmacılar doğal konuşur: düşünürken duraksar, kendini düzeltir, örnek verir ve konudan sapar. Senin görevin bu doğal akış içinden karar cümlesini ayıklamaktır. İyi haber şu: sınav yapımcıları her soruda aynı birkaç tuzak kalıbını döndürür; kalıpları tanıdığında sürpriz kalmaz.
IELTS Listening has two related question types, and both measure the same core skill: being able to recognise what you hear in different words.
Multiple Choice. You are given a question stem and 3-4 options; you listen to the recording and choose the correct one. Sometimes it is "which of the following" with a single answer, sometimes "choose two" with two answers. The critical point is this: the options are not an exact copy of the words you hear in the recording. When the speaker says "the library closes early on Fridays", the correct option is paraphrased as "reduced opening hours at the end of the week". This type is especially concentrated in Section 2 (a single-speaker informational talk) and Section 3 (a student-student or student-tutor academic discussion).
Matching. You are given a list of questions (for example people, days, places) and a box of options (for example opinions, features, activities); by listening you match each question to the correct option. The most common forms are person → opinion and place → feature matches. What is reassuring is this: the answers almost always follow the order of the questions, that is, the recording moves from top to bottom. But the items in the options box are given out of order and usually outnumber the questions; that is why you must read every option in advance too. An option is usually used only once; unless otherwise stated, don’t write the same letter for two questions.
The common enemy: the distractor. In both types the exam tries to mislead you with a distractor. The sneakiest distractor is the option the speaker says first and then abandons. In the sentence "I was going to take the morning class, but I switched to the evening one", "morning" is a trap; the correct answer is "evening". Solving these two question types is really about learning to catch these mind-changing moments.
Why is it so hard? In gap-fill (form/note completion) questions you only catch a single word; but in multiple choice you have to hold three or four possibilities in your head at once and test them all as the recording moves on. This doubles the listening load. Moreover, speakers talk naturally: they pause while thinking, correct themselves, give examples and go off topic. Your job is to extract the decision sentence from this natural flow. The good news: the test-makers recycle the same few trap patterns in every question; once you recognise the patterns, there are no more surprises.
Bu soruları çözmek şansa değil, ses başlamadan kurduğun düzene bağlıdır. Aşağıdaki sırayı her seferinde uygula.
Altın kural. Doğru şık nadiren kayıttaki kelimeleri aynen tekrar eder. Duyduğun bir kelimeyi bir şıkta aynen görüyorsan, önce onun bir tuzak olup olmadığını sorgula.
Okuma süresini nasıl kullanırsın? Her bölüm öncesi verilen 20-30 saniyede tüm şıkları eş anlamlısıyla kafanda ön-çevirisini yap: "expensive" görünce "costs a lot / not cheap" ihtimallerini önceden düşün. Böylece kayıt geldiğinde beynin o anlamı zaten bekliyor olur. Matching'de ise seçenek kutusunu kısaltarak kodla: her seçeneğe zihninde A, B, C gibi tek harf ata; kayıt hızlı akarken uzun ifadeleri tekrar okumakla vakit kaybetmezsin.
İki cevaplı sorularda ("Choose TWO letters") her iki doğru şık da kayıtta ayrı ayrı, çoğu zaman peş peşe geçer. Bir tanesini bulunca durma; ikinciyi de aktif olarak ara. Bu tip sorularda en sık hata, ilk doğruyu bulup rahatlamak ve ikinciyi kaçırmaktır.
Solving these questions depends not on luck but on the order you set up before the audio starts. Apply the sequence below every time.
The golden rule. The correct option rarely repeats the words in the recording exactly. If you see a word you heard exactly in an option, first question whether it is a trap.
How do you use the reading time? In the 20-30 seconds given before each section, pre-translate all the options into synonyms in your head: when you see "expensive", think in advance of possibilities like "costs a lot / not cheap". That way, when the recording comes, your brain is already expecting that meaning. In Matching, code the options box by shortening it: assign each option a single letter like A, B, C in your mind; you won’t waste time rereading long phrases while the recording flows quickly.
In two-answer questions ("Choose TWO letters") both correct options pass separately in the recording, often one after the other. Don’t stop when you find one; actively search for the second too. In this type of question the most common mistake is finding the first correct answer, relaxing, and missing the second.
Çeldiriciler rastgele değildir; sınav belirli kalıpları tekrar tekrar kullanır. Bu kalıpların sesli sinyallerini tanırsan tuzağı gerçek zamanlı fark edersin. Aşağıdaki tabloyu ezberle.
| Tuzak türü | Sinyal (ne duyarsın) | Doğru cevaba ne olur |
|---|---|---|
| Fikir değiştirme | I was going to..., but / in the end / actually | İlk söylenen çeldiricidir; but/actually sonrası gerçek cevaptır. |
| Olumsuzlama | not, isn't, wasn't, no longer, rather than | Olumsuzlanan seçenek elenir; karşıtı doğrudur. |
| Tereddüt / düzeltme | no wait, sorry, I mean, or rather | Düzeltmeden sonra gelen ifade doğrudur. |
| Eş-kelime tuzağı | Şıktaki kelime kayıtta aynen geçer | Genellikle yanlış; doğru cevap paraphrase edilmiştir. |
| Başka kişinin görüşü | My tutor said... but I think | Soru "kim" diye soruyorsa görüşü doğru kişiye ata. |
| Kısmen doğru | Şıkkın yarısı doğru, yarısı yanlış | Tümüyle doğru olan tek şık kazanır. |
Bir seçeneği bir soruya kilitlemeden önce, konuşmacının o maddeden olumlu mu yoksa olumsuz mu bahsettiğini kontrol et: "We considered the museum but decided against it" cümlesi müzeyi elenmiş seçenek yapar. Kişi-görüş eşlemelerinde ise en kritik nokta kimin ne dediğini ayırmaktır; bir kişi başkasının görüşünü aktarabilir ("Sarah thinks it's too risky, but I disagree") ve soru "I"nın görüşünü soruyorsa Sarah'nın fikrini işaretlemek hatadır.
Distractors are not random; the exam uses certain patterns over and over. If you recognise the audio signals of these patterns, you spot the trap in real time. Memorise the table below.
| Trap type | Signal (what you hear) | What happens to the correct answer |
|---|---|---|
| Changing one’s mind | I was going to..., but / in the end / actually | The first thing said is the distractor; after but/actually comes the real answer. |
| Negation | not, isn't, wasn't, no longer, rather than | The negated option is eliminated; its opposite is correct. |
| Hesitation / correction | no wait, sorry, I mean, or rather | The phrase after the correction is correct. |
| Word-match trap | The word in the option appears exactly in the recording | Usually wrong; the correct answer is paraphrased. |
| Someone else’s opinion | My tutor said... but I think | If the question asks "who", attribute the opinion to the right person. |
| Partly correct | Half the option is right, half is wrong | Only the option that is entirely correct wins. |
If you summarise this table in one sentence: the first thing you hear is rarely the answer. The speaker thinks aloud; your job is to catch the conclusion they reach, not what they said on the way. Also never forget that the options are paraphrases; instead of searching for the recorded sentence word by word, look for the option that carries the meaning of that sentence.
A trap specific to Matching is the extra items in the options box. For example, 7 options are given for 5 questions; the remaining 2 options fit no question and are usually there, passing briefly in the recording, to mislead you. Before locking an option to a question, check whether the speaker mentions that item positively or negatively: the sentence "We considered the museum but decided against it" makes the museum an eliminated option. In person-opinion matches, the most critical point is to separate who said what; one person may relay another’s opinion ("Sarah thinks it's too risky, but I disagree"), and if the question asks for "I"’s opinion, marking Sarah’s view is a mistake.
Aşağıda bir öğrenci (Tom) ile akademik danışmanı (Dr. Reed) arasında geçen kısa bir Section 3 tarzı diyalog var. Önce transkripti oku, sonra soruları kendi başına dene, ardından çözümlere bak. Dikkat et: bu diyalogda üç ayrı fikir-değiştirme anı gizli ve her biri bir soruya karşılık geliyor.
Transkript.
Dr. Reed: So, Tom, how's the research project going? Have you decided on your main topic?
Tom: Well, at first I wanted to focus on renewable energy, but honestly there's already so much written about it. So in the end I switched to urban water management — it feels fresher.
Dr. Reed: Good choice. And for your data, are you planning interviews?
Tom: I thought about interviews, but they take ages to arrange. I'll rely on the city council's published statistics instead.
Dr. Reed: Sensible. One more thing — the deadline. The department says the 15th, but because you started late, I can offer you an extension to the 22nd.
Tom: That would be a huge relief, thank you.
Question 1. What is the main topic of Tom's project?
Question 2. How will Tom collect his data?
Questions 3–4. Match each date with what it refers to.
Dates: 3. The 15th 4. The 22nd
Below is a short Section 3 style dialogue between a student (Tom) and his academic tutor (Dr. Reed). First read the transcript, then try the questions on your own, then look at the solutions. Note: three separate mind-changing moments are hidden in this dialogue, and each corresponds to a question.

Bu dört hata, çoktan seçmeli ve eşleştirmede en çok puan kaybettirenlerdir.
Pratik tavsiyesi. Bu tuzakları gerçek zamanlı yakalamak için transkriptli dinleme yap: önce sınav gibi çöz, sonra transkripti aç ve hangi cümlenin seni yanılttığını işaretle. Birkaç haftada beynin but/actually/in the end sinyallerine otomatik alarm vermeye başlar; asıl gelişme burada olur.
These mistakes lose the most marks in multiple choice and matching.
Practice advice. To catch these traps in real time, do transcript-based listening: first solve it like the exam, then open the transcript and mark which sentence misled you. In a few weeks your brain starts to give an automatic alarm at but/actually/in the end signals; this is where the real progress happens.
