IELTS Listening'in en görsel görev tipi harita / plan / diyagram etiketlemedir. Başarının anahtarı gramer değil, yön ve konum dilini (opposite, next to, at the far end, turn left, beyond) anında çözebilmektir. Bu sayfada haritayı önceden okumayı, başlangıç noktasını bulmayı, konuşmacıyı adım adım takip etmeyi öğrenecek; sözlük, çözümlü bir kampüs turu ve sık tuzaklarla stratejiyi tamamlayacaksınız.
The most visual task type in IELTS Listening is map / plan / diagram labeling. A campus, park, museum, or building plan is in front of you; as the speaker guides you from a starting point, you "walk" along with them on the map and match the empty spaces with options A–H. The key to success is not grammar, but the ability to instantly understand direction and location language (opposite, next to, at the far end, turn left, beyond). On this page, you will learn to read the map in advance, find the starting point, and follow the speaker step by step; you will complete the strategy with a dictionary, a solved campus tour, and common traps.
Sizin göreviniz, dinlediğiniz konuşmaya dayanarak her boşluğu doğru etiketle eşlemektir.
Konuşmacı sizi belirli bir başlangıç noktasından (çoğunlukla the entrance veya You are here) alıp adım adım yönlendirir.
Kritik nokta şudur: Bu görevde dil bilginiz değil, yön ve konum dilini gerçek zamanlı çözme beceriniz test edilir. Konuşmacı "as you come in, the café is immediately on your right, and directly opposite it you'll find the information desk" dediğinde, siz bunu duyarken haritada sağa bakıp kafeyi, sonra tam karşısına bakıp danışma masasını yerleştirebilmelisiniz.
In this task type, you have a visual map (of an area, campus, park), a plan (of a building's floor layout, an exhibition hall), or a diagram (parts of a device, a process) in front of you. Some places on the visual are marked with arrows or boxes, but they are unnamed. Your task is to match each blank with the correct label based on the conversation you listen to.
You will typically see two question formats: (1) there are locations marked with letters (A–H) on the map, and each question asks you to match a place name with the correct letter; (2) there are numbered blanks on the map, and you select the correct name from a given options box (library, cafeteria, parking...). The difficulty is the same in both formats: correctly positioning the place.
This task type almost always appears in Section 2 of IELTS Listening. Section 2 is a monologue where a single speaker introduces a place — for example, a tour guide shows visitors around the campus, a municipal officer describes a new park, a museum staff describes the halls. The speaker guides you step by step from a specific starting point (usually the entrance or You are here).
The critical point is this: In this task, it is not your language knowledge that is tested, but your ability to solve direction and location language in real time. When the speaker says "as you come in, the café is immediately on your right, and directly opposite it you'll find the information desk", you should be able to look right on the map for the café, then look directly opposite to place the information desk while you hear this. The audio does not repeat; therefore, preparation and following are everything.
Altın kural: Konuşmacı yönü senin bakış açına göre mi (on your left) yoksa pusulaya göre mi (to the north) veriyor, her cümlede ayırt et. İkisini karıştırmak en yaygın hata kaynağıdır.
Turn the map task into a walk: walk along with the speaker on the map with your finger. The following steps establish this "walking together" method.
The golden rule: Distinguish whether the speaker is giving directions from your perspective (on your left) or according to the compass (to the north) in every sentence. Mixing the two is the most common source of error.
Aşağıdaki ifadeleri duyar duymaz anlamını düşünmeden görebilmelisin. Bunları haritada gerçek hareketlere çevirerek çalış.
| İngilizce ifade | Türkçe | Haritadaki anlamı |
|---|---|---|
| opposite / directly across from | tam karşısında | Bir referans noktasının yolun/koridorun öbür tarafında, karşı karşıya |
| next to / beside / adjacent to | bitişiğinde / yanında | Referans noktasına doğrudan komşu, aralarında başka bir şey yok |
| between ... and ... | ikisi arasında | İki işaretli yerin tam ortasında kalan boşluk |
| at the end of / at the far end | sonunda / en uçta | Bir yolun/koridorun bittiği en uzak nokta |
| at the top / at the bottom | üst tarafta / alt tarafta | Haritanın üst kenarına / alt kenarına yakın konum |
| turn left / turn right | sola / sağa dön | Yürüme yönünü değiştir; sonraki tarifler yeni yöne göredir |
| beyond / just after | ötesinde / hemen sonrasında | Referans noktasını geçtikten hemen sonraki yer |
| on your left / on your right | solunda / sağında | Senin yürüme yönüne göre — pusula değil, bakış açısı |
| north / south / east / west of | ...ın kuzeyinde/güneyinde/doğusunda/batısında | Kuzey okuna göre yön; bakış açına bağlı değil |
| in the corner / on the corner | köşede / köşe başında | İki kenarın veya iki yolun kesiştiği köşe |
| halfway along / midway | yarı yolda | Bir yolun/kenarın tam ortası boyunca |
| around the back of / behind | arkasında | Referans binanın arka tarafında, cepheden görünmeyen taraf |
| in front of | önünde | Referans binanın cephe/ön tarafında |
You should be able to think of the meaning of the following expressions as soon as you hear them. Practice by translating them into real movements on the map.
| English Expression | Turkish | Meaning on the Map |
|---|---|---|
| opposite / directly across from | directly opposite | On the other side of the road/corridor from a reference point, facing it |
| next to / beside / adjacent to | next to / beside | Directly neighboring the reference point, with nothing else in between |
| between ... and ... | between the two | The space that remains exactly in the middle of two marked places |
| at the end of / at the far end | at the end / at the far end | The furthest point where a road/corridor ends |
| at the top / at the bottom | at the top / at the bottom | Position close to the top edge / bottom edge of the map |
| turn left / turn right | turn left / turn right | Change the walking direction; the next instructions are based on the new direction |
| go past / walk past | pass by ... | Pass that place, the target is further ahead — that place itself is not the answer |
| beyond / just after | beyond / just after | The place immediately after passing the reference point |
| on your left / on your right | on your left / on your right | According to your walking direction — not the compass, but the perspective |
| north / south / east / west of | to the north/south/east/west of ... | Direction according to the north arrow; not dependent on your perspective |
| in the corner / on the corner | in the corner / at the corner | The corner where two edges or two roads intersect |
| halfway along / midway | halfway | Exactly in the middle along a road/edge |
| around the back of / behind | behind | On the back side of the reference building, the side not visible from the front |
| in front of | in front of | On the front side of the reference building |

Welcome to the campus tour. Let me point out the main buildings from where we're standing now, at the main entrance at the bottom of the map. The main path runs straight ahead of us, heading north. As you come in, there's a small café immediately on your right, in the bottom-right corner. Now, directly opposite the café, on the left side of the path, is the Student Services office. Walk a little further up the path and you'll pass the library on your right — you can't miss its glass front. At the far end of the path, right at the top, is the lecture theatre. Finally, the sports hall isn't on the main path at all; it's tucked away behind the library, to the east.
Map (described in words): The map is a rectangle. The main entrance is at the bottom-centre. A main path runs from the entrance straight up (north) to the top. Positions are marked A–F.
• A = bottom-right corner (right of entrance)
• B = bottom-left, left side of the path
• C = middle-right, part way up the path
• D = middle-left, part way up the path
• E = top-centre, at the end of the path
• F = middle-right, set back behind position C, to the east
Questions — match each place to a letter A–F:
1 Café ________
2 Student Services ________
3 Library ________
4 Lecture theatre ________
5 Sports hall ________

1 Café ________

1. Başlangıç noktasını kaçırmak. Konuşmacı yönleri başlangıç noktasına göre verir. "You are here" veya girişi bulup parmağını oraya koymadan dinlemeye başlarsan, sonraki tüm "sağ / sol / ileri" ifadeleri havada kalır ve zincirleme hata yaparsın.
2. Yön ifadesini ters anlamak (bakış açısı vs. pusula). "on your left" senin yürüme yönüne göredir; "to the west" ise kuzey okuna göredir. Konuşmacı bir cümlede birinden diğerine geçebilir. Yürüme yönün değiştiğinde ("turn right") "sol/sağ"ın da değiştiğini unutma.
4. Konuşmacının düzeltmesini kaçırmak. IELTS bilinçli olarak düzeltme kurar: "...the café — oh, sorry, I mean the canteen — is opposite..." veya "it's not next to the hall, it's actually behind it". İlk duyduğun bilgiye kilitlenme; cümlenin sonuna kadar dinle, çünkü doğru cevap çoğu zaman düzeltmeden sonra gelir.
5. "Go past" ile hedefi karıştırmak. "go past the library" kütüphanenin cevap olduğu anlamına gelmez — onu geç, hedef ileride.
1. Missing the starting point. The speaker gives directions based on the starting point. If you start listening without finding "You are here" or placing your finger on the entrance, all subsequent "right / left / forward" expressions will be left hanging, and you will make a chain error.
2. Misunderstanding the direction expression (perspective vs. compass). "on your left" is based on your walking direction; "to the west" is based on the north arrow. The speaker may switch between the two in one sentence. When your walking direction changes ("turn right") don’t forget that "left/right" also changes.
3. Not examining the map in advance. If you don’t read the title, north arrow, and written reference names during the preparation seconds, you will have to work on both solving the map and listening at the same time when the audio starts — and you will lose both. First, the visual is read, then listened to.
4. Missing the speaker's correction. IELTS deliberately sets up corrections: "...the café — oh, sorry, I mean the canteen — is opposite..." or "it's not next to the hall, it's actually behind it". Don’t lock onto the first information you hear; listen to the end of the sentence, because the correct answer often comes after the correction.
5. Confusing the target with "go past". "go past the library" does not mean the library is the answer — pass it, the target is further ahead. Distinguish between places mentioned as references and those that are the answers.
