Completion (gap-filling) is the task type that produces the most questions in IELTS Listening: you fill the gaps in a form, note, table, flow chart or sentence with the words you hear while listening to the audio. On this page you will learn three things without compromise: (1) reading the word limit and never exceeding it, (2) predicting the type of each gap (is it a noun, a number, a date?) before listening, (3) writing the right word with the correct spelling. The audio is played only once; that is why preparation is everything.
Completion görevlerinde ekranda eksik bilgiler içeren bir metin görürsün ve boşlukları sesten duyduğun kelimelerle tamamlarsın. IELTS'te dört alt biçimi vardır ve hepsi aynı mantıkla çözülür:
Kelime sınırı = altın kural. Talimat her zaman kaç kelime yazabileceğini söyler. En sık görülenler:
Sınırı aşarsan cevap tümüyle yanlış sayılır — doğru kelime içinde olsa bile. “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS” dediğinde üç kelime yazarsan puan alamazsın. Tireli sözcükler (check-in) genelde tek kelime; sayılar rakamla (15) ya da yazıyla (fifteen) kabul edilir.
Yazım hayat memat meselesidir. IELTS Listening cevap kâğıdında yanlış yazılan kelime yanlış kabul edilir. accommodation, definitely, restaurant, Wednesday gibi zor kelimeleri; ve çoğul -s takısını doğru yazmalısın. Büyük harf hataları genelde cezalandırılmaz ama özel isim/başlangıç harflerinde temkinli ol.
Son ve en önemli gerçek: ses yalnızca bir kez çalınır. Geri sarma yok. Bu yüzden başarı, ses başlamadan önceki 20-30 saniyelik hazırlıkta ve dinlerken doğru anda dikkatli olmakta gizlidir.
In Completion tasks you see a text with missing information on the screen and complete the gaps with the words you hear in the audio. IELTS has four sub-forms, all solved with the same logic:
The word limit = the golden rule. The instruction always tells you how many words you may write. The most common are:
If you exceed the limit the answer is marked completely wrong — even if the correct word is among them. If it says "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS" and you write three words, you get no marks. Hyphenated words (check-in) usually count as one word; numbers are accepted as digits (15) or in words (fifteen).
Spelling is a matter of life and death. On the IELTS Listening answer sheet, a misspelled word is counted as wrong. You must correctly spell difficult words like accommodation, definitely, restaurant, Wednesday, and the plural -s suffix. Capitalisation errors are usually not penalised, but be cautious with proper nouns/initial letters.
The final and most important fact: the audio is played only once. There is no rewinding. That is why success lies in the 20-30 seconds of preparation before the audio starts and in staying alert at the right moment while listening.
Completion görevini dört evrede düşün: hazırlık → tahmin → dinleme → kontrol. Aşağıdaki sırayı her boşlukta uygula.
Aktif tahmin gücü. Dinlemeden önce her boşluğa “buraya ne tür kelime düşer?” diye not düşersen, ses akarken beynin sadece o türü arar. Bu, tek dinlemede doğru anda odaklanmanı sağlayan en güçlü tekniktir.
Think of the Completion task in four phases: preparation → prediction → listening → checking. Apply the order below to every gap.
The power of active prediction. If, before listening, you note on each gap “what kind of word goes here?”, your brain will search only for that type as the audio flows. This is the most powerful technique for focusing at the right moment in a single listening.
Her boşluğun etrafındaki kelimeler cevabın türünü ele verir. Aşağıdaki tablo, sık görülen bağlamları, beklenen türü ve dinlemede kulak kabartacağın sinyal ifadeyi eşleştirir.
| Boşluk bağlamı | Beklenen tür | Dinlenecek sinyal |
|---|---|---|
| Name: ________ | Özel isim (harf harf söylenebilir) | “my name's…, that's spelled…, double L…” |
| Address: ________ Road | Sokak/cadde adı | “the address is…, I live at…” |
| Date: ________ | Gün / tarih | “it's on…, held on…, starting the…” |
| Cost: £________ | Fiyat / sayı | “it costs…, the fee is…, per person…” |
| Time: ________ | Saat | “at…, from… to…, opens at…” |
| Phone: ________ | Rakam dizisi | “you can call me on…, the number's…” |
| Bring a ________ | Somut nesne (isim) | “you'll need…, don't forget your…” |
| The main ________ was… | Soyut isim (akademik) | “the key factor…, this led to…” |
Sayı, tarih ve harf yazım kuralları (Section 1'de puan kaybının en sık nedeni):
The words around each gap reveal the type of the answer. The table below matches common contexts, the expected type and the signal phrase you should listen out for.
| Gap context | Expected type | Signal to listen for |
|---|---|---|
| Name: ________ | Proper noun (may be spelled out letter by letter) | “my name's…, that's spelled…, double L…” |
| Address: ________ Road | Street/road name | “the address is…, I live at…” |
| Date: ________ | Day / date | “it's on…, held on…, starting the…” |
| Cost: £________ | Price / number | “it costs…, the fee is…, per person…” |
| Time: ________ | Clock time | “at…, from… to…, opens at…” |
| Phone: ________ | String of digits | “you can call me on…, the number's…” |
| Bring a ________ | Concrete object (noun) | “you'll need…, don't forget your…” |
| The main ________ was… | Abstract noun (academic) | “the key factor…, this led to…” |

LIBRARIAN: Right, let's get you registered. Can I take your full name?
STUDENT: Yes, it's Helen Marsh — that's M-A-R-S-H.
LIBRARIAN: Thank you. And your address?
STUDENT: I'm at 14 Oakfield Avenue.
LIBRARIAN: Lovely. Now, the standard membership costs eighteen pounds a year, but as a student it's only twelve.
STUDENT: Great, the student one then.
LIBRARIAN: Perfect. Your card will be ready to collect on Thursday. Oh, and when you come in, please bring a recent utility bill as proof of address.
STUDENT: No problem, I'll bring one on Thursday.
LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP FORM — Complete the form. Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

Cevaplar ve adım adım çözüm:
Bu örnekte iki klasik tuzak vardı: form soyadı isterken ilk ismi yazma riski (boşluk 1) ve konuşmacının fiyatı düzeltmesi (boşluk 3). Her ikisi de yalnızca boşluğun bağlamını dikkatle okuyup düzeltmeyi bekleyerek çözülür.
Below is a transcript extract of a Section 1 style registration conversation and a form completion task based on it. Don’t read the transcript first; in the real exam you read the form first, then listen. But here, so you can see the logic, we give the transcript and solve each gap step by step.

Answers and step-by-step solution:
This example had two classic traps: the risk of writing the first name when the form asks for the surname (gap 1) and the speaker correcting the price (gap 3). Both are solved simply by reading the gap’s context carefully and waiting for the correction.
Konuşmacının kendini düzeltmesi. IELTS bilerek yanlış bir bilgi verip hemen düzeltir: “It's on Tuesday — no, sorry, Wednesday.” Doğru cevap ikinci bilgidir (Wednesday). “no, sorry / actually / I mean / let me correct that / in fact” gibi düzeltme sinyallerini duyunca ilk yazdığını sil.
Kelime sınırını aşmak. En yaygın puan kaybı. “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS” altında “a recent utility bill” yazarsan üç kelime olur ve yanlış sayılır.
Ses “the talk begins at six” derken form “Start time: ________” diyebilir. Sinyal kelimeyi (begins = start) tanı ve boşluğa duyduğun değeri (6) yaz.
The speaker correcting themselves. IELTS deliberately gives a wrong piece of information and immediately corrects it: “It's on Tuesday — no, sorry, Wednesday.” The correct answer is the second piece of information (Wednesday). When you hear correction signals like “no, sorry / actually / I mean / let me correct that / in fact”, delete what you first wrote.
Exceeding the word limit. The most common loss of marks. Under “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS”, if you write “a recent utility bill” that is three words and counts as wrong. Don’t rewrite the words already on the paper (article, adjective); write only the one that goes in the gap.
Spelling and plural errors. Hearing the right word and spelling it wrong = zero marks. Memorise words like accommodation (double m, double c), restaurant, Wednesday. Also grammatical plural: if the sentence says “two ________”, the answer most likely ends in -s.
Number-format trap. Confusing -teen with -ty (15 / 50), digits repeated with “double / triple”, money expressions like “fifteen fifty”. Convert the number you hear into a digit at once and verify it with the context (is it a price, a time, a phone number?).
The paraphrase trap. The text on the paper is not an exact copy of the audio; it is usually a synonym. While the audio says “the talk begins at six”, the form may say “Start time: ________”. Recognise the signal word (begins = start) and write the value you hear (6) in the gap.
Son hatırlatma: Completion'da puanı kaybettiren nadiren “kelimeyi duymamaktır”; çoğu zaman sınırı aşmak, yanlış yazmak ya da düzeltmeyi kaçırmaktır. Bu üç noktayı disipline edersen Section 1 ve Section 4'te tam puana çok yaklaşırsın.
Final reminder: In Completion, what loses marks is rarely “not hearing the word”; most often it is exceeding the limit, misspelling, or missing a correction. If you discipline these three points, you will get very close to full marks in Section 1 and Section 4.
