Every advertisement, notification and autoplaying video is a small claim on something we rarely think of as a resource: our attention. Unlike money, attention cannot be saved or borrowed; each of us has only so many waking hours, and once a minute has been spent staring at a screen, it is gone for good. It is precisely this scarcity that has made human attention one of the most valuable commodities of the digital age.
The companies that dominate the internet do not, for the most part, sell us their products; they sell us to advertisers. Their real business is to capture and hold our gaze for as long as possible, and every feature of a modern app — the endless scroll, the flashing badge, the carefully timed alert — has been refined to that single end. Engineers speak, without irony, of designing for 'stickiness', as though the highest compliment one could pay a piece of software were that users find it difficult to put down.
It would be too easy, however, to cast this simply as a tale of corporate villainy. Users are not passive victims; many of us reach for our phones out of boredom, loneliness or habit long before any notification arrives. Nor is the technology without genuine value: the same platforms that fragment our concentration also let us learn, organise and stay in touch across great distances. The problem is not that these tools exist, but that their commercial incentives pull relentlessly in one direction — towards more time spent, whatever the cost to the user.
And the cost, critics argue, is considerable. A mind trained to expect a fresh stimulus every few seconds may find sustained thought increasingly uncomfortable. Some researchers warn that the constant switching of attention leaves us not better informed but merely more agitated, mistaking the sensation of busyness for genuine understanding. Whether these effects are as severe as the gloomiest commentators claim remains, for now, an open question.
What is clear is that the debate can no longer be dismissed as the grumbling of technophobes. Even the designers who built these systems have begun to voice unease about what they have made. As one former executive remarked, the goal was never to enrich anyone's life; it was, quite simply, to keep them coming back. Until that underlying incentive changes, no amount of individual willpower is likely to tip the balance for long.
