Text 1 · The Untranslatable

There is a persistent myth, cherished by monolinguals and polyglots alike, that anything said in one language can be rendered faithfully in another. Professional translators know better. Every language carves up experience along its own idiosyncratic lines, and some of those lines simply have no counterpart elsewhere. The Portuguese saudade, the Japanese mono no aware — such words are routinely paraded as proof that certain feelings resist translation altogether.

Yet to conclude that translation is therefore impossible would be to mistake difficulty for futility. What the skilled translator offers is not equivalence but negotiation: a series of calculated compromises in which something is inevitably surrendered so that something more important may survive. A pun sacrificed here buys fidelity to tone there. The question is never whether meaning is lost — it always is — but whether what remains justifies the loss.

This, perhaps, is why the finest translations are so rarely literal. The translator who clings slavishly to the original word for word tends to produce prose that is technically accurate and yet somehow dead on the page. Paradoxically, it is the translator willing to depart from the text who often comes closest to its spirit. Faithfulness, in this peculiar art, is frequently achieved through betrayal.

Few forces have reshaped modern life as quietly as the pursuit of convenience. Each new device promises to spare us some small effort, and we accept the bargain gratefully, seldom pausing to ask what, in aggregate, we might be giving up. Were we to tally the cumulative cost of all these tiny surrenders, the sum might give us pause.

Consider the humble skill of navigation. A generation ago, finding an unfamiliar address demanded a map, a sense of direction, and a degree of attention to one's surroundings. Today an app does the thinking for us. Convenient, undeniably — yet studies suggest that those who rely wholly on satellite navigation gradually lose the very capacity to build a mental map of the world. What is surrendered is not merely a skill but a way of paying attention.

None of this is an argument for discarding technology, which would be both futile and absurd. It is, rather, a plea for discernment. Convenience is not free; it is simply a cost we have grown accustomed to paying in a currency we rarely notice — our own competence. Had we understood the price sooner, we might have spent more carefully.
