Listening: A Linguistics Guide for Beginners (10 soru)

Text 1 · The Reluctant Cartographer

For most of her early career, Elena Voss was told that the ocean floor was flat and featureless — a claim she never quite believed. Having studied geology at a time when few women were admitted to the field, she had grown used to being underestimated. In the 1950s, denied permission to join research voyages because she was a woman, she was left ashore to analyse the data that her male colleagues collected at sea.

It was precisely this restriction that led to her greatest discovery. While plotting thousands of depth measurements by hand, Elena noticed a deep valley running down the middle of the Atlantic. Had the pattern appeared only once, she might have dismissed it; but it recurred in every profile she drew. The valley, she argued, was evidence that the seafloor was slowly splitting apart — an idea most scientists rejected at the time.

Her conclusions were dismissed as "girl talk" by one senior researcher. Yet within a decade the theory she had defended was widely accepted, and it is now regarded as a cornerstone of modern geology. Elena rarely spoke about the recognition she had been denied. "If I had been allowed on those ships," she once remarked, "I might never have sat still long enough to see the pattern."

A controversial experiment is under way in the highlands, where a large estate is being deliberately returned to the wild. For over a century the land had been used for intensive sheep farming, which, according to ecologists, had stripped the hills of their native forests. The owners have now decided that nature, rather than machinery, should be allowed to do the work of restoration.

Under the scheme, which is known as rewilding, animals that disappeared from the region hundreds of years ago are gradually being reintroduced. Beavers, whose dams slow the flow of rivers, have already been released, and it is hoped that their activity will reduce the flooding that has repeatedly damaged towns downstream. If the beavers had not been brought back, supporters argue, these floods would only have grown worse.

Not everyone welcomes the project. Some farmers, whose livelihoods depend on the same land, fear that predators will eventually be introduced too. Others worry that tourists, attracted by the returning wildlife, will disturb the very ecosystems the scheme is meant to protect. The estate's managers insist that local residents will be consulted before any large animal is released. "Nothing will be decided," the director promised, "without the community having been asked first."
