Ten years ago, most people had never worked from home. They travelled to an office every morning, spent hours in traffic, and returned late in the evening. Since then, everything has changed. Today, millions of employees around the world work remotely, at least for part of the week.
The change did not happen overnight. For years, a few companies had already been experimenting with flexible hours, but most managers didn't trust the idea. They believed that workers would be lazy at home. However, when offices were suddenly closed during the health crisis of 2020, companies had no choice: almost everyone was sent home to work online.
The results surprised many bosses. Studies have shown that remote workers are often more productive than office workers, not less. People save time because they don't travel, and many say they feel happier and less stressed. Some companies have even closed their expensive city offices and saved millions.
Of course, remote work is not perfect. New employees sometimes feel lonely, and it is harder to learn from experienced colleagues when you never meet them. Important information is not always shared quickly, and some workers find it difficult to 'switch off' at the end of the day.
Experts believe the future will be 'hybrid'. Most people will not return to the office five days a week, but they will not stay at home every day either. If companies offered a mix of both, they would keep their staff happy and their costs low. As one manager said last month, 'We have learnt that the office is a place to meet, not a place to sit alone at a desk.'
